I don't mean every indie game every single time, but indies in general seem to have dialogue problems. I'm a couple hours into Iconoclasts and while the gameplay itself is fine, the writing makes me want to close it and never look back. It's grating, somehow pompous and self-flagellant at the same time, and it feels like it was all written by someone who's literally never had a single conversation with another human being at any point in their twee little lives.

One of Iconoclasts' problem is that game is written by an ESL who previously used to do crazy action games that were low on story. And now he's trying to do this ultra serious piece about religion and dying planet.

oh no no no, that's the thing. These people have taken MANY writing classes. Somehow it makes them even worse. Is it the idea that because they've taken a class it now makes them automatically good? I don't know, but don't think for a moment that these terrible writers are uneducated. They are very well educated, probably got straight A's. They are still absolutely godawful writers in spite of it (maybe because of it!).
A big part of the problem is that these people live in a delusional fairytale in real life. They literally do not understand how the real world works, how actual people work. They don't like to see that there's a seedy underside to humanity and they absolutely do not want to admit that it's not always a bad thing.
These infantile adults only view the world in basic forms. There is no subtelty or depth to their writing. It's about as deep as a twitter post.

I think it's extremely insulting to swedes that you think they have such little understanding of English in spite of years spent learning it in their school system. In fact, if you just do some cursory googling you'll get inundated with articles discussing how good swedes are with the english language.
