they're all fun

BOLT ACTION IS REAL ACTION

I like all three of these formulas.

Thousand Arms

I like all but the third probably does it for me. I'm a sucker for style and I like the idea of being able to make any weapon work instead of having to use something ugly but strong.

All three are good. The one that fucking sucks yet is one of the most used is
>Weapons are generic loot with random modifiers, 99.9% of them are completely useless and the one you're using becomes obsolete as soon as you chance upon a weapon with bigger numbers
>Pictured: Every "looter shooter", Diablo-clone and roguelike

I like the first one, but in particular, in games like Oblivion where the sword isn't all that factors into it. Sword type + Strength + Blade, with modifiers like various poisons, enchantments, stealth, and buffs if you have maxed out Armorer, plus variations on swing speed / reach / damage from different blade types like daggers, short swords, long swords and claymores. If you want to take it further, Luck adds both to your base damage and to your Blade Skill, up to level 100, Endurance can give you more fatigue to use on power attacks, and Speed can determine your ability to move quickly in combat, plus the armor movement perks for which ever armor skill you invest in if you wear armor. Even further than that, custom spells, enchantments and potions can be used to buff all of these skills, attributes and factors to, ironically enough, Oblivion.

Point being if you know what you're doing you can wreck shit with simple iron weapons, though these effects only multiply as you progress through weapon/armor types.

That said I think all three choices you posed are viable, I just like Oblivion a tad too much.

the one where they fill different niches and there are several useful weapons

Dark Souls style has the best concept
Find a favorite and upgrade it, it's viable
Still like the 1st and 2nd options though

RIght sword is alright
Rest are garbage concepts

Shooters, unironically.

Middle is best because all of the weapons are typically balanced right off the bat, your choice is based on preference of damage/speed/range/etc, and you customize their behavior/performance with attachments or other modifiers that you acquire over time. Fundamentally stronger weapons would usually have some drawback or situational disadvantages, meaning everything remains useful AND you are incentivized to swap between several in order to handle different encounters.

I like when the weapon grows with the player character
i played a game a long time ago that did it perfectly on the og xbox but i never could remember the name of it. was an arpg in the gauntlet style iirc

The first option is shit if the game has guns instead of swords.
It's retarded that the starter pistol can't kill people when you shoot them in the head and it's even worse when the gun is supposed to be good irl but since you start with it it's actually shit, no I don't care how rare that 9mm pistol is it just can't do more damage than a fucking .45

Yeah man. Also every game should have you immediately killed or crippled whenever you take a bullet just like real life, with a chance of you bleeding out and dying if you manage to survive.

The first option is great even with guns, see Cave Story, Saints Row and San Andreas
If the game shit thats another story

D. [almost] All weapons are good but situational

this guy gets it

3 if it has actual upgrades and not just a +69 shit and you have to do side content to get the most out of the system, otherwise 1.

I'd rather put weapons into a material based crafting system so the characters that put points into crafting are the ones getting better weapons than someone going full unga that is just capped by level for use or currency (you cannot upgrade existing weapons only sharpen/clean/add poison/etc. ).
This system can work with on any type of weapon and is mostly featured with RPGs nowadays.

>capped
meant to say inhibited*

bullshit. soulsborne games have like 2 good weapons each.
one that you get in the first 10 minutes, and one that you get after you've beaten 99% of the game.
the rest are character gimping, niche garbage because muh builds, and pvp gimmicks for le ebin invations

>all weapons are viable
>post most broken and overtuned weapon from game with poor balance
Yeah, sure. How about you post some real example.

A set of a handful of well fleshed out and unique weapons each with the ability to be viable late game

So BB rather than DS
