In the original image, the lighting looks like it's coming from behind, which would make people assume there's a shadow covering the front, so the "white" would look blueish in that scenario

Which is why I know it's blue/black but still looks white/gold.

When light hits your object from behind like that you will get a little of the back light fraying edges of your object, and the shadow planes will be quite deep colour, but not super saturated. The dress has pretty uniform colour and the blue of it is a bit too saturated to be just a sort of exclusion shadow. It could be blue like that if it were in a low light bluish area, say in a really contrived alcove out of the light, but theres no indication that thats the case (and it is indeed not the case)
