How do you feel user?
>Wikipedia states that "retro style" is something that "generally implies a vintage of at least 15 or 20 years"
>pic related is 19 years old and therefore - retro
How do you feel user?
old? nah
I generally consider retro anything before internet use was a big part of gaming. It shifted the feel in games and game design greatly. PS2 sits on that border, but that generation had enough I would say it sits in the newer era.
I'm not pedantic enough to care about precise dictionary definitions, but more the way words get actually used. Gen 6 is were we saw a heavy multiplayer online push begin, the idea of DLC started to pull away from the idea of xpacs, and we also saw the big push to show off and move toward realism.
All that is a nice way to say here is where brown and boring started to take over, but hadn't shit the bed entirely yet. So it makes feel thankful my childhood games and gaming taste was shaped by games with color, humor, and content. And its nice to see that making something of a comeback.
>PS2 is now 20 years old
I want to go back
Like /vr/ is a dying retirement home and having 6th gen games/consoles on there isn’t the badge of honor millennials think it’ll be.
Retro, in video games anyway, is anything before 1998, this is a fact
>PS2 will never be on /vr/
Holy fuck based.
PS2 is much closer to older systems than to anything that came after. That was the last "plug and play" generation, without layers and layers of online components.
I miss moot
/v2k/. 2000's consoles are just too damn old to discuss here anymore and with /vr/ only going up to 1999 they don't have a home.
>badge of honor
Yea Forums is filled to the brim with garbage, memes, and only the newest shit. People want PS2 on /vr/ because it was a great console with a lot of great games and /vr/ is the only place it has a good chance of decent discussion.
The fags on /vr/ are eternally against it because they are old faggots who somehow got it in their hands that one of the greatest consoles of all time will bring about the ruin of /vr/ forever.
>a great console with a lot of great games
Hardly. 96% of the games on it were shovleware. Much like the Wii.
No, the other 4% of decent games doesn't make up for it.
It might be retro, it's still not /vr/. /vr/ will be destroyed if PS2 discussion is ever allowed, and it's perfectly possible for PS2 discussion to take place on Yea Forums. Only zoomies who don't understand why the boards are separated disagree.
What's your favorite ancient game?
>retro gamer clothing got huge when mario was about 15 years old
>halo 1 came out 18 years ago
>still not /vr/
That literally doesnt make what he said untrue, retard.
Halo is gay as fuck
who?
>wanting to mix Halobabies and Doomfags
retro is three or more gens away
it's not that hard m8
>that one of the greatest consoles of all time will bring about the ruin of /vr/ forever.
Which is true because it'll bring about just enable the same sonyfags who shitpost here. Not to mention the biggest waifu games like Persona 3 would now have a place there.
96 percent of any console's games are shovelware, dipshit.
unironically PC98 waifushit >>>>> modern waifushit
A 6th gen general on /vg/ makes the most sense.
I fundamentally disagree with this. Maybe the ps2 console itself is closer to older stuff, but the games are basically the same as everything after it. Ps1 is the end of 2d and very beginning of 3d. 2d is fully formed and 3d is being experimented with and figured out. PS2is full on 3d and games now are fundamentally the same and the biggest changes are graphics.
What's stopping them from shitposting now you retard? PS1 is allowed on /vr/. They could shitpost all day about that if they want because it had a lot of great shit too.
Fuck time
>and games now are fundamentally the same and the biggest changes are graphics.
This was every generation until the PS2. Technology improved, graphics improved, new possibilities in game design were explored as a result. But it was still just games, there was no difference in putting a disc on your ps2 and playing your game to 100% and putting a cart on your NES and playing your game to 100%.
The ps3 generation however implemented drastic changes to gaming not related to simply having more powerful machines, it's when gaming started to "evolve" sideways rather than just upwards.
>What's stopping them from shitposting now
The fact that the worst parts of the Sony fanbase came from the ps2? I mentioned persona on purpose you know because 3 onwards is an entirely different game.
But you're talking about the consoles. The gameplay difference between snes and ps2 games is much more different than ps2 to Ps4 games, despite the snes and Ps4 each being separated from the ps2 by two generations.
He means achievements, DLC, patches (so your physical PS3 games are worthless), that kinda thing.
The guy from the goatse pic.
Well if we're going to talk strictly about game design, PS2 game design is still way closer to PS1 than to PS3 imo. The only games in the PS2 era that were more resembling of modern games were ones made by american studios, and let's not forget it was the PS3 era when American devs became big in consoles again.
That post was truly awful, its painfully obvious you dont belong here. But dont despair, there is a positive solution! Rather than trying to fit in, you should strongly consider going to a site more suitable for posters such as yourself, such as Tumblr and Reddit maybe even Resetera!
You will be happy, and we will be happy, best of luck. But dont come backBye!
>PS2 game design is still way closer to PS1 than to PS3 imo
Not even close, the ps2 started the spectacle over substance style of game
Nice bait
Still the greatest video game system ever made
I still disagree. CRT fags are annoying as fuck but don't seem to ruin the board despite it.
I don't think anything past PS2 should ever be allowed on that board. At some point, another type of /vr/ should get made but PS2/Gamecube absolutely belong. They were the last of the old guard before the bullshit really hit.
The ps1 did, with it's fancy FMVs and CD audio.
Gen 6 is just gen 5 with better graphics. Gen 5, the 3D gen, was a way more drastic change compared to what came before.
No it fucking didn't, games were always about visual fidelity, PS3 is closer to PS4 and 5 than it is to 1.
Retro is a style that is no longer in use
i mean it made its mark but its games aged horribly compared to gamecube to accomodate graphical improvements of that gen.
No
Flash Games
>it's a "games age" episode
so 16 bit and even 8bit isnt retro?
Do you even see games like that anymore? (hah(
The only console I ever owned was PS2. My dad bought it for me in 2012. I was born in 2000. Am I a zoomer or not?
post all the pic related you want, it actually looks retro compared any other game consoles of the time
ha ha never ever
>being this deluded
That shit all started with Final Fantasy VII on the PS1. That game literally sold on its graphics and just happened to be a great game as well.
You are fucking delusional if you don't think games with tank controls didn't age like ass. Obviously not all games age. Chrono Trigger is still considered enjoyable by people who play it today but I doubt to many people would enjoy Gothic with its absolute shit controls or System Shock 1 with the original controls.
/vr/'s cope is that games still play like they did on PS2. You have to wonder if they've played either.
gen 5, 6, and 7 were peak gaming.
we won't have that back for decades, once the market finally crashes
Moot was a degenerate piece of weeaboo shit who never gave one about Yea Forums.
>Consoles
They had tank controls back when they first released, you got older your tastes changed and you gained standards.
and Hiroshima is better?
Sorry nincel, but ps1 is allowed on vr
Gen 6 in /vr/ never ever
PS2 games and other stuff of that gen would really lose their home if they were allowed on /vr/. The board is a dickwaving contest to prove who was around to play the oldest games in their heyday, imagine how they'd shit on any attempts to talk about ps2
Retro games are like black and white movies.
The term invokes an era of experimental yet simplistic design that cannot exist in any other time, and thus has a clearly definite end date that doesn't shift around.
yes... that's what ageing means
No man. I got lucky and never had to deal with it. The only one I ever had to deal with was Megaman Legends and that wasn't nearly as bad because you could jump and turn the camera at the same time and almost eliminate the entire feeling of tank controls and I still didn't like it. It was just tolerable.
You're never getting into /vr/, fag
Not really no one ever really talks about Gen 1-3 on /vr/ it's almost exclusively gen 4 and 5 console wars.
At least he didn't sell Yea Forums out for sub par SJW pussy and cause a whole Exodus resulting in the loss of thousands of original and oldfags, plus Anonymous, leaving us with a bunch of 30+ year old boomers and 15+ zoomers.
From a gameplay and control perspective, not much has changed from 6th gen to current. Control wise there isn't that much difference from say, DMC3 to DMC5. There have been refinements sure but DMC3 can still be played as if it's new today.
Gen 1? The fuck?
Pong
Yes, but besides Pong, what other games?
>pic related is 19 years old
So am I
PS2 isn't retro you fucking retard
I don't know I'm not an actual Boomer. The odyssey is gen 1. Whatever the fuck was on that
peng
Hey he kept sonyfags out of /vr/. More than Hiro ever did for anyone.
>console wars
>on /vr/
What
how?
It's annoying you can't really talk about PC games outside Doom or Quake on /vr/ since there's no rule about when PC game becomes retro.
Retro means 8-bit/16-bit games.
>It's annoying you can't really talk about PC games outside Doom or Quake on /vr/
Dude, there's loads of games you can talk about
I'd say Deus Ex is the cutoff.
The whole board is n64 v psx
the old RE games for me lately are a bit of a struggle with the tank movement. Fucking games on the gamecube with full analog still use the tank movement for some fucking reason, it's ass.
Any console where the majority of games run at 480p is obviously retro at this point I don't know how anybody could think otherwise
There's literally no console wars at all, the fuck are you talking about?
>short FMVs not much different than Ninja Gaiden on the NES in terms of being shown for a quick moment
>most games are similar in style but maybe with lego people instead of sprites or just larger due to increased storage
Nah
Gen 6 was much more Gen 7 with SD instead upscaled HD. Gen 5 still had plenty of 2D fighters and FPS games were still all WW2 and taking more notes from Doom rather than being Halo-ish.
Gen 6 does exist a little in the middle though where some of the more gameplay focused ideas in design were still present and had not been completely drained away yet.
But Gen6 was the Gen of GTA3 and Halo. Of 3D being a core feature of fighters and just not just a nudge to the side. And the Anime boxset that was Xenosaga was a lot different from the the total of at most 10mins of FMVs found in 40+ hours Final Fantasy VII.
I do kinda see what you mean though, but I just think those things and games are the basis of the games we still get now. So I think its more the prototype of the new era than the last gasp of the previous.
>This post was already 11 years ago
I like to think that everyone over at /vr/ is still suffering from the butthurt that is the death of the Dreamcast which was caused by the PS2 and that's why they get all autistic on anyone who mentions the PS2.
Daily reminder that 80s-90s is retro now, vintage stuff belongs in the museum already.
Where did everyone's PS2 go? Every talk about PS2 just turns into emulation shit. PS2 emulation is trash. Everybody gives excuses about how its apparently "too hard" and "cumbersome" and "clunky" to like... have a PS2. Or this small black rectangle "takes up too much space". I still have mine, I still have it hooked up, and aside from the disc drive (I load isos from HDD) it works great. My most played console even now.
Whetr did your PS2 go? You jerk it off on here so much but you cant like... own one?
Don't talk to me you Sega saturn loving faggot
>majority at 480p
So Xbox then because you ain't getting that very often on PS2.
both
well 480p or less
The fact that only some games even run at 480p on PS2 is even more of an argument that it classifies as retro
If I had a PS2 and every game, I would still play on emulator instead.
I gave my PS2 to my best friend after I got a PS3.
I found a working PS2 outside just laying around and took it home. I'm gonna use it play all those hidden gems I never got the chance to play as a kid. I wanted to try out these four after I finished the recent remaster of the second series of games.
Play the NES library.
>Yea Forums is filled to the brim with garbage, memes, and only the newest shit.
>so /vr/ needs to allow stuff the people on Yea Forums want there
>there's no way this will turn /vr/ into Yea Forums
Fags like you have already dropped the quality of /vr/ pretty bad in the last few years. We want less of you and those like you on /vr/, not more.
Seriously though this is the closest thing to a console war and it's pretty civil
Honestly whoever allowed the dreamcast on /vr/ should be shot. It ruined the board.
>
cant post it on /vr/
not retro
THIS!
You literally made up an argument in your head and then thought you won it because of how it was spinned.
You have mental issues and need help. Also, it's going to happen eventually. You have to die sometime faggot. You can either be replaced with people who like the stuff you do too or by Fortnite faggots.
What's the obsession with /vr/? Make your own forum if it's THAT important to you to have a new "6th gen!" discussion place. PS2 will NEVER be allowed on /vr/
>another type of /vr/ should get made but PS2/Gamecube absolutely belong.
I promise this will never happen, ever.
>a degenerate piece of weeaboo shit who never gave one about Yea Forums.
So the average Yea Forums poster?
Even worse since he created it, so double cancer points.
They shitposted Yea Forums into it's current state and somehow believe they won't do the exact same thing on another board. They don't want a place to discuss 6th gen(v2k or something), they just want an excuse to be able to make meme threads about 6th gen games like "Grove Street. Home." and other crap like that.
