It holds up very well for a 21 year old game, and one that went from 2D to 3D at that. Once I got used to the different style of gameplay, it became one of the best games I´ve ever played.

It really doesn't. The textures are totally barebones, the combat is stiff and the aiming is clunky. Cutscenes are way too long and regular dialogue moves too slowly. It has an amazing soundtrack, but that's about all that holds up.

Even Dragon Quest has depth in its combat system once you reach the mid game where buffs, smart item use and party swapping become mandatory to survive without grinding. Its games like Final Fantasy 6-9 that let you get away without even a basic understanding of the systems and still finish the game

Waggle controls for combat making it janky are the only real issue with it. It's one of the most underrated Sonic games.

For example: The Sonic Storybook series(Secret Rings, Black Knigth) are bad games due to the awful controls and the level design, Colors DS is just mediocre (not bad, not good) since it doesn't adds much to the game experience other games in the series have provided, the Sonic Rush games in this case.

I didn't say they were ACTUALLY POSSIBLE on the consoles, but they're some of the few games to actually come close.
Shovel Knight's entire soundtrack was made in fucking famitracker, its sprites look pretty much at home among others of the era thanks to their NES-esque palette and detail levels (though they're slightly better looking, of course), and the entire game just has the NES gamefeel down pat.
Cave Story is more a question of raw feeling. It's not totally accurate, but it's exceptionally close.
