Unfortunately doubtful
The only way it can make a comeback is adhering to its survival horror roots
>and that’s unfortunately dead
>and that’s unfortunately dead
RE2 remake.
No and that's a good thing. Here's why:
A third person shooter isn’t true survival horror
This hereI could see a resurgance of Silent Hill if survival horror returns as well.
Unfortunately though, I don't see it happening under Komoney.
I guess but it's been over a decade at this point. I still don't understand why they only made 4 games but maybe it's for the best
But user Kojima is working on Silent Hills! I wonder how its doing right now...
if it does it wont be anything like the older games at all
Not him, but it was pretty scary on my first 2 playthroughs. I'm almost dreading playing through it on hard mode.
Tense maybe but not scary
Just my opinion
>Silent Hills
stahp
I want them to give the first game a true remake. It really needs it. I played through it about a year ago, but I can't help but wonder what it would look like if made today. Knowing Konami they would just ruin it like they did 2 and 3.
Hopefully not. It seems a lot of people did play those shitty western games and even if they tried hard to make a good one they are still going to try taking modern gaming tropes and insert it in. Nothing would kill the immersion of SH more than shit like quest markers, good combat, health bars and mission objectives. Oh wait the western games had this shit...
I try and immerse myself as much as possible, so I probably don't speak for the majority. Tense is a good way to put it.
I certainly fucking hope not.
Why are gamers so attached to brand names? Worse than capeshitters.
I hope not, imagine asking for a sequel to Apocalypse Now, the game industry has to understand that some things have a beginning and an ending, the SH trilogy is one of the greatest achievements in gaming, something that you can point to and feel proud of, why do we have to dilute its name further with unnecessary and shitty sequels?
I'm not inherently against TPS horror but no, fuck it, the REmake series should've stayed classic, as it is to me it has very little value outside of it being a possibly neat zombie game
Fair enough
Perhaps.
But I'd also argue that Silent Hill 1 and 2 are part of those select games where the technological limitations of the time worked for them (obvious example: fog)
I think the best of both worlds would be a SH1 remake on 2s engine
It will give it better gameplay and graphics with 2s gritty world
I've heard this argument and I somewhat support it. It's just that there has to be a way to recreate this aesthetic with modern technology without taking away what makes them unique. I don't know if it would ever happen if given the chance as the art director has already stated that he has no interest in SH remakes and doesn't really want to come back to the series at all.
Konami would still fuck it up anyway. They would probably take away the fixed camera angles and tone down the fog so you can see the monsters better. I don't know, maybe being able to see the monsters as formless shadows in the fog until they come close enough to take shape would be cool in its own way, but it wouldn't be SH 1 at that point.
Fuck, how old are those scans already? 15 years old? I want to go back.
I'm and oldass fan of the series, and I want it to remain dead already. Let it rest.
DEmake2 was a generic piece of shit 3rd person shooter, just like DS and TEW.
And if you did not play on Hard mode right off the bat, you are a literal babby-tier casual, that should not even try to lurk survival horror threads.
I find it difficult to turn it into a mobile loot box business model, so I doubt it.
kino
RE2 was never really horror desu. The only decent horror that franchise have is the original remake.
Post-4 SHs were redeemed by Yamaoka's music alone. What were they thinking?
It's times like this where you can't help but wonder what Kojimbo would have ended up doing with this franchise if he was still with Konami and everything had gone smoothly.
youtube.com
What is it about SH threads and attracting the most upset anons? This post went from totally calm to actually pissed off in record time.
Shattered Memories is underrated.
you can't just say that anything past 3 is shit GET OVER IT your a fucking KONAMI boottlicker FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU
Nah, let it die. They've already used up all the potential this franchise had.
Go do new shit.
Bring back Silent Hills and name it something else, I dunno.
I just want more survivor horror games FUCK
The only place to get decent horror nowadays is Indie stuff.
The only thing it had going for it is that it was different
It could have gone in so many cool, dark psychological directions. Especially without weapons
But alas, they made it primarily for the WIi and dumbed down the spooky factor
>it got what it deserved
>They've already used up all the potential this franchise had.
What franchise still hasn't realised all of it's potential in your opinion?
It was pretty good. I'm fine with games getting reimaginings. I enjoy revisiting worlds from a new perspective - assuming I actually like the interpretation that is. The motion controls were interesting and I really liked hearing Harry's dialogues. The only thing I didn't like was having to shake the controller to get the monsters off. It never worked and hindered the overall experience.
Damn dude, I thought school started already
Silent Hill is one of the very few videogame franchises I'd call a masterwork.
Dead Rising.
2 was an okay next step from 1, but 3 and 4 went on another direction entirely.
The perfect DR game still hasn't been made.
I'm taking this time to shill banned memories. It's an upcoming survival horror inspired by SH. This is an early look from two years back.
youtube.com
It may be finished next year.
How would you feel if they hype a new game, and then constantly disappoint and destroy the series that you dearly love with every new entry, until it gets so diluted that Konami thinks Book of Memories is worth to make?
I also don't know about a SH1 remake. A part of me says it would be nice, but part of the thrills SH1 gave were so tied to the limited lighting and situation, that it would need a legitimate effort to replicate the dreadful ambiance it gave on PSX. Either way, this cannot be done with Konami holding the IP. So, let the series die.
What's your take on Penumbra/Amnesia and RE7?
D4, since it didn't get funded for any additional seasons. At least Swery gets a chance to continue Deadly Premonition though.
Is the walking animation any better now?
Re7
Can't say. I haven't seen much aside from an announcement last from a few days ago.
No
Nice first half though.
It should've stayed dead from 2005 onwards.
Yes. Check the gaming news in October
>survival horror games are hard
lmao okay
Not that user but I will never understand why this opinion is so perpetuated. The mines are weak but they're also short, while the ship is much better than the old house or testing area, and is almost as good as the mansion basement.
What I want is a new Siren, based on the PS2 ones, not the western reboot.
>What's your take on Penumbra
Overture and Black Plague are pretty damn good.
>Amnesia
Disappointing after the Penumbras
>and RE7
Utter garbage.
Buyers remorse as fuck.
I agree, maybe I loved too much the first part.
No chance, the director burned it all down when he decided he wanted to make Gravity Rush
>7
>utter garbage
How you didn't kill yourself during the era of 5/6 is beyond me.
>and RE7
>Utter garbage.
Nice meme opinion, the game is far from perferct, but it's pretty damm solid.
How so? Last year they had a convention with all the original actors (even with the makeup). This year they have some sort of Siren art exhibition, the hashtag #siren2019 for it was even trending on jap twitter for some time.
maybe plagiarism laws became stricter in japan lul
Anyone else enjoy Homecoming and Downpour?
No.
Seek help.
Haven't played them. Still waiting to be able to find them for like $5 or some shit.
>How you didn't kill yourself during the era of 5/6 is beyond me.
You mean the golden era of video games? I was enjoying myself tremendously, and had an optimistic view on the future.
Then this zoomer shit happened, and everything is fucked up.
Case point: you Outlast-generation thinking that RE7 and up would be any "good", or even comparable to original RE and SH trilogies.
You literally need to play more games, and get some sexual intercourse mate.
You know something's off if you can get 99% the same experience through Youtube as you would by "playing" the game yourself.
It's dead unless Gravity Rush dying revives it
>RE7 is like Outlast
Ah, you didn't play the game for more than an hour. As you were, I suppose.
I remember enjoying Downpour for its setting but the game had a lot of glitches
Kat did nothing wrong.
When you see what horror gaming has become(first person walking sims) those games seem alright
Nah dude, RE4-6 are a whole other ballpark. RE7 went first-person survival horror, nothing to do with any Resident Evil, period. it was easy to ignore RE5 and 6 once RE4 set the series direction going forward.
Survivor is a thing and Rev1 experimented with first person viewpoints.
Redpill me about Siren. It's the only well known Japanese horror game I haven't played from PS2 era. Is it a pure horror game like SH or a tribute to cheesy horror movies like RE(because it sure looks like one)? Both?
>You know something's off if you can get 99% the same experience through Youtube as you would by "playing" the game yourself.
Now that's not fair. You could say the same about any horror game for that matter.
What's to stop a guy from fleeing Jack like a retard in the house instead of hiding behind an open door, or running towards him to side-dodge him, or trigger a grab for a get-out-of-jail-free?
What's to stop a guy from frantically running away from dogs instead of knifing them at the middle of the jump?
I overlooked the spinoffs. Am I missing out on anything?
>Homecoming has a lot of the classic elements of SH with the sound effects, shit's locked, Yamaoka music, decent enemy designs, static image puzzles, and map.
>But it also had a shitty retread of SH2 for a story, lackluster protagonist, bland color scheme, and a multitude of graphics issues
>Downpour had a decent idea of Muprhy going through other peoples' Otherworlds and the concept of a prisoner was a good idea on paper
>But the story is nonsensical, shit character models, UE3, terrible enemy designs, and is ridden with bad gameplay design
>Book of Memories is a diablo clone
There's no winning as a SH fan anymore.
At least October is coming up so I'm gonna do a yearly replay of SH1-4
>pretty damn solid
compared to 5&6, its butter on hot toast. So I can agree with that
The Revelations games aren't really spinoffs, they're budget horror-oriented experiments while the numbered entries were busy being peak rooty-tooty. They're worth a look, just don't expect the same kind of technical polish as 5/6.
I think I'll just do my usual SH1 playthough or maybe I will play SH4. SH2-3 are comfy but bever unnerving like the other two.
Siren is alot like silent hill in the survival horror aspect, you pick ammo, weapons, key items, and health. you play mostly in an over the shoulder perspective and you have a weird ability to sight jack enemies and other characters. other than that you're in a hell version of some province of japan (i havent played it in a while so dont quote me on that).
game is fun though, has a really out there multiple ending thing going on, the reboot that came out not too long ago was a good sequel ish game.
He started in three blunders (that playstation battle royale)
It's pure horror with an an impeccable atmosphere. It's set in an 70's Japanese backwater village. You need the right mindset for it, but when you immerse yourself it really becomes one of the best horrors.
The problem is, the "game" part is very... unique. The first Siren is almost Sierra-tier cryptic. If you play it without a walkthrough you're in for a very, very hard and long game.
2's fixed most of first game's flaws (and has some extremely neat enemy designs, especially later in the game), but in my opinion it isn't as scary as first. I suggest you play 2, and then continue to 1 if you want more of the same, but harder.
Don't play PS3 remake.
I've only ever played the first game myself. The music alone is enough to unnerve me.
Not him but I bought that last game on my ps3 and never played it. Do you recommend that one or Fatal Frame (I never played those)?
Why not play the remake/sequel?
One, GR is a nice series. Flawed, but nice. Two, my man with a plan, Sir Dan was in Playstation All-Stars too. You gonna talk shit about my dude for that one too?
Fatal frame and Siren are both good games to play
It will come back as a mobile gacha or a pachinko machine.
Fatal Frame is my favorite horror series, can't recommend that shit enough. First entry's a bit rough but I like it the most despite that. 2's the popular one and 3 has its fans. I like all of them, though I've yet to play 2's Wiimake.
It shouldnt. Sometimes its okay for a franchise to end.
People understand this with movies but they want TV shows and video games to go on for eternity.
It's... okay. It has a weird episodic structure that fucks with pacing, the plot went to shit (it's about an american crew of reporters who stumbled upon the village ritual) and it's somehow TOO easy. The graphics are gorgeous, though (until you sightjack and framerate plummets down to 8-10 FPS). Some of the original missions that were lifted straight up from the original were great to see in HD (like the one where you have to escape the house as a little girl). But overall it just doesn't have that special something the PS2 games had.
>People understand this with movies
We're in the era of remakes, reboots and capeshit.
Yes it will. Konami is looking for the right studio for the new SH. I'd say- expect something in 2021 probably.
I saw several game pitches already and I don't know what to think about this honestly.
SH2 remake is more probable *wink wink
it's bad.
>I saw several game pitches already
And my dad is Gabe Newell. HL3 coming to Switch only.
If you consider the franchise to be only the first three games, then sure, I agree with you.
it's been a long, embarrassing, out of control garbage fire after 4
there have been so many instances of konami trying to make SH5 and changing the release names right before release to try and protect the brand
bottled lightning
shattered memories was not awful
it weren't good neither
the fucking "puzzles" in that game are shocking

The ramblings of a village idiot.
Silent Hill 4 is the scariest game in the series. The environments fill me with more dread than any other Silent Hill game; they use unconventional architecture to confuse and suffocate you. I'm glad the appreciation for it is growing over time.
>Nig the flutter
Fucking based
It's pure horror, it has some of the most authentic locations in any game ever, it's based on some real life abandoned island in Japan and all the little details makes you really feel like you are in a real place, the gameplay mixes stealth and action, you can fight enemies, but defeating them will only knock them out temporarily, to help you move around there's an interesting mechanic that's explained in lore, you can "sightjack" to see through enemies eyes and learn they movement patterns, some puzzles are based around this, you can watch an enemy inputing a code to open a lock for example and use it later.
The second game is a more friendly and streamlined version of the first one, not in a bad way, because the game needed that, but I still think Siren 1 is one of the most interesting horror experiences that I have ever had, it's a game that makes the most basic objective, just getting from point A to point B a genuinely hard and frightening endeavor, when you get the first night level and you sightjack into one of those crawling things is one of the few moments I've been actually scared by a game (why sightjacking is such a genius mechanic, it gives the player a glimpse of what's expecting him).
I think you should play 1 first, than check out 2 and see how the differences impact the feel of the game and don't be ashamed of using a walkthrough, some conditions that you have to meet in order to unlock new missions/levels are just too cryptic and you will be frustrated with the game trying to understand what you are supposed to do.
I don't think the appreciation for it is growing. I always liked SH1 and SH4 because they are more horror and because of what you also perceived about the the environments. I think I have fell in love with spatial design and architecture only through videogames. Playing the laberynth of SH1 and going through the maps and finally throwing it all that away with the design mindfuckery that was Nowhere... The panoptic and spirals of SH4... It's sad that developers fell for the open world lazy "level design" that is no different from randomly generated or even dungeon crawlers. Only Bloodborne have given me a little hope.
>silent hill in the survival horror aspect
I don't think Silent Hill is really that survival-horror in mechanics. It doesn't have inventory management(except 4), the difficulty is relatively forgiving, puzzles utilize riddles more compared to fetch quests(again except 4), level design is more linear than Metroidvania-like(except 1) etc. The atmosphere is more at odds with horror, though.
Sounds interesting. Is the game cryptic because of localization issues/because it requires some kind of manual or is it just how the way the game is designed?
It would be easier to let Silent Hill rest if it wasn't for the fact that no one makes good horror games anymore.Resident Evil is literally the only franchise left other than meme-tier indie 'horror'
No Team Silent No Silent Hill
Westfags and Kojimafags need not apply
Any crutch the game gives you and removes it at the end is really good in any genre. Removing safe rooms and navigation will never be bad if done properly.
>t really needs it
God no, you shit eating faggot.
Ahh, yes... That time when you went to SH4 blind and your appartment starting having crazy shit all of a sudden.
That's how I feel about Origins
Shat memz really shows its weakness if you a second play-through
Aside from Darkwood, which was a treat, what other indie horror games are worth a shit?
>inb4 lone shitvior
Cry more.
Scary as fuck game attached to a frustratingly shitty one. Don't even attempt it without a guide.
>revealing yourself as a shit poster that quickly.
Pleb
It's not just removing the map. Nowhere doesn make sense: you start walking in circles from room to room and you never arrive at the same place, you may even get to another floor.
Ps 5 remaster of all the games developed by hijjinx studios
Shame the second half is dog shit
The only thing I want out of a SH1 remake is for the visuals to look exactly like SH3. Keep every other aspect the same.
Cry more.
But, it's not.
It's how the game was designed, shit you do in a level with one character will affect another character when he revisits that level at another time, the problem is that the actions required are too convoluted and don't make sense at the time, this would require teh player to replay every level a ton of times and even then some are straight up impossible to figure out imo, for example you have to trap a specific enemy inside an well in one level, so that it doesn't block another character's path when he comes to that level, there's no indication of any of that, there's not even a indication that you can trap the enemy, it's a new mechanic used just for that specific occasion, it's really the biggest flaw of the game.
It seriously is
Assuming Konami gets their stuff together I think a remake has a lot of potential. Honestly I just want the same game, but brought up to current standards. I don't think it's impossible for them to recapture what made it great on newer hardware.
Then you're frighteningly naive.
>Someone makes a SH thread
>Decent discussion goes on
>Then the shitters start to come in
Every single SH thread always goes the same way. No one is allowed to discuss these games without some hardcore "fans" jumping in and spitting out "facts". Can't you guys just go play the damn game instead of crying and getting mad over your dead franchise?

Sorry, didn't mean to scare you.
Remaking SH 1 in this day and age is still a stupid idea. Sorry you got offended over someone pointing out the obvious.
It's fine. I just don't want them to retroactively ruin it.
Also the game already got a 'reimagining; anyways
I think a remake of 2 could work though since you know they would at least respect the original vision and wouldn't attempt to 'update' the horror factor like they would 1
>current standards
Fuck that, "current standards" have been toxic for the health of the genre since like 2007.
>open wor
Can't agree more, open world is the death of game design.
What do you mean? How is that naive? Are you referring to graphical limitations strengthening the surreal dreamlike feeling of the game's environments or are you just some edgelord who can't let go of the past?
Hype Hype Hype bois
Quite scary but they fucked up gameplay and difficulty. I never had patience to finish it.
I'm saying that they wouldn't be able to capture the same feelings of oppression and what not that the original SH was able to do with it's limited hardware. SH 1 is very much a product of it's time and the system it was on. Some of the best and more important aspects of it are literally due to the PS1's limitations and when you remove that you get an entirely different feeling experience.
Also I just straight up don't trust modern Konami to do it justice. I know you THINK you want everything to just look like unreal engine whatever but it wouldn't have anywhere near the same effect.
Not him, but you must be terribly ignorant to assume that a modern triple-A studio, especially Konami, would do any kind of faithful re-creation of a classic survival horror in the 2020s. It would be yet another streamlined 3rd person action game, and you know it.
I know that people are cautious when it comes to remaking that game, but I think that mentality is just silly. Of course there's a chance that it can be fucked up, but there's also a chance it can be done justice. The original game is good, but some of you are being delusional.
It's a real shame Forgotten Memories' development was cut and it's stuck on iOS only. It looked real good
youtube.com
Not him but it's not. It's just to uncomfortable to play since it's not sighseeing anymore but you have a killer right behind you and no longer a safe place to go.
It's actually annoying and not scary at all. Making you babysit a character and backtrack through areas you've already been too was a really fucking poor choice.
I get what you're saying and a lot of it is true. I don't really feel like it's as impossible as you make it out to be though. I feel like you're jumping to a few conclusions here. Of course Konami is going to ruin it, no one in their right mind would ever trust them. What I'm saying is there are things that can be done today that could possibly enhance what's been set up. I'm not talking about an over the shoulder camera. I'm not talking about opening a door and letting enemies follow you. I'm not saying that they need to do away with tank controls or cramped environments. I'm simply referring to seeing the game in a slightly different light.
I know that it doesn't matter what I'm going to type since SH (and people on Yea Forums) are as stubborn as they come, but it really isn't impossible. Also Silent Hill 1 has a distinct look and feel and assuming I want that to look like any other unreal engine game is jumping to another conclusion.
I've said that nearly 5 times in this thread.
Babysit only in theory. She doesn't die so your point is moot. If you're pining for good endings, then that's your problem. And even then, having her that damaged still allows you to get the good ending, you just need to be faster than usual. And that's without using candles.
Backtracking would be a good point, except for the fact that, playing it blind or not remembering every detail in the game, you might be making your game harder with misuse of swords or outright avoiding ghosts instead of getting what you need in proper time and form. It is a subversion of sorts. You know your way around now, but shit gets worse this time. Unpredictably worse.
It's not even a "reverence to the original" thing. I abhor the mentality that "current =/= better", and the horror games of today rarely capture the essence of what made golden age survival horror so enduring.
I agree current doesn't equal better. The thing is I still want to see what that game would look like today, assuming the gameplay is camera were identical.
*assuming the gameplay and camera are identical.
>on 2s engine
user, I...
>heh, the annoying bits are only annoying if you don't want a shit ending
>a-and if you play like shit then the reuse of the worlds is actually a good thing!
Now this is some weak justifications. Just admit that SH 4 has some major flaws like the rest of the fandom already instead of trying to be super spherical by claiming that the clear and obvious flaws are actually good things!
My SH Downpour package just arrived.
What am I in for?
It does have flaws, that's why no one dares put it above any of the other three, even if it does get some things better than SH2 and 3. They're just not as detrimental as you're making them out to be, or are bad for the wrong reasons. Eileen is a problem, but not because of your argument. Eileen has no business following you throughout the maps, period. It fucks with the tense atmosphere. That's my bone against her, not the babysitting part. You don't need to babysit an immortal, something you realize the moment you eventually fuck up and see her getting hammered and not dying.
Backtracking is a problem for replays, not a blind playthrough, which is why it I agree it is an issue and could've been handled better. It works for a first playthrough wonderfully, but not for this series, which usually has multiple endings and always begs for a rerun.
Since you brought TEW up i want to complain a bit about that game. While i don't agree with your opinion of Re2make and i find it awesome i dont understand people who love TEW. I really wanted to finish that game and i barely "survived" getting to chapter 7 like 2 years ago. Yesterday i reinstalled it because i forgot why i never finished it and i was reminded why immediately. Why are there so many wrong things with this game. Shitty checkpoints, shitty hitboxes, the goddamn bosses are infuriating. I get that ammo is scarce but do shots really have to go through enemies? Why the fuck do enemies spawn when you move valves, invincible enemies are annoying and it all culminated with boxhead. I loaded the game and i was reminded immediately about a shitty boss that requires lots of ammo or expensive resources to kill 3 times while on a time limit with not checkpoint and 1 health pickup.
But that's what Silent Hill is?
TEW is, in a lot of ways, what I wish RE4 was by design but not necessarily by technical polish. TEW is definitely rough as hell and I think some of that roughness is intentional by design (looking at you, jank as fuck aiming). But while that meant I loved the parts that you could take more slowly, it also meant that I found its attempts at balls to the wall action frustrating. Liked it enough to beat it twice and all the DLC once, and when I do love the concept of a chapter I absolutely love it, but ultimately the game is pretty hit or miss. I think the string of chapters from 7-10 is fantastic, though.
>shitty checkpoints
git gut
>shitty hitboxes
legit complaint
>hard bosses
well bosses are based on trial-error. you'll do it easily by using the set pieces after dying for enough times.
>not enough ammo for safehead
Well I didn't have any issues like those, maybe you should've upgraded more and use the crossbow more?
waste of money
If over the shoulder shooting and no camera angles is the requirement then I don't want to see it come back.
Re2 is soulless af, only good thing is the waifu and pedo bait
