The only time Nintendo advertised Yo-kai Watch it ended up with Westerners turning away from the series because they thought it looked stupid, and that's not even getting into them pushing the shitty designs over the good ones for toy merchandise. Nintendo has done nothing but fuck over Yo-kai Watch constantly in favor of Pokemon.

Yo-kai Watch 1 is immediately retconned in the first 10 minutes of 2. That said, while both 2 and 3 are good games, I would say to just skip them if you're only interested in 4. Their stories don't necessarily matter outside of introducing certain characters, which they'll reintroduce for newer players anyway.
That said, if you are a Switch owner, have fun waiting years for localizations.

I can agree that Tri (even for the lack of weapons) and 3U were good, but 4U had some absolutely janky menus and some weapons have their combos and hitboxes out of wack.
Gen/X (or GU/XX) fix up a lot of this. You can play the entire game with Guild Style and no arts, and it wouldn't be any more different than 4U, aside from the exception of the janky menus and hitboxes.
