It's a Gamecube title and the first 3D game in the franchise. Try it out and if it's not your cup of tea jump straight to Abyss or Vesperia

I'd rather not fuck around with emulators though. Maybe they'll release them in time. Are the games in any way related story-wise or are they more stand-alone? Why do you think it's best to play them chronologically?

Just like with Final Fantasy, unless it's a direct sequel they're not related, except in a couple of exceptions like Symphonia/Phantasia and Zestiria/Berseria taking place in the same universe. In the former it doesn't realy matter, in the latter you'll miss a bunch of references but that's that.

Technology. For example, you can't free run in Symphonia, Abyss introduced that. Also Symphonia/Abyss/Vesperia are often regarded as the holy trilogy of Tales of, kinda like VII/VIII/IX when it comes to FF

PS2 emulation is easy as pie these days. Abyss emulates pretty well even on mid tier PCs.
