the cringy I was referring to is the way Kokima present a, yes, mediocre, story:
>add cheesy piano notes for the female parts about talking to stick together
>add overly emotional acting to the female
>add a protagonist with gruffy voice who doesn't care
>add random exposure guy with a mask from Code Vein/God Eater
Then we will get the less broad story, doing monologues about mumbo jumbo in a cientific manner while trying to appear deep and dramatic

Oh! Kojima did what I wanted: main story-line progression (you follow that path) through those cities but can do side-quest in the world you go "opening". I bet the game design is way better than MGSV.

Kojima's formula is usually the same though. Same generic cliche start so he can insert the usual twists to subvert expectations, then some tech/magic-babble to explain everything and to subvert expectations one more. His plot structure is actually very predictable.
