Westerners didn't get hooked because Capcom didn't market Basara 3 at all even tho they went trough the trouble of using really good voice actors and everything.
They didn't release 3 Utage to the west that had incredible replay value compared to vanilla 3.
So the west got stuck with a fun game that unfortunately didn't have much replay value, thus it soured the western reputation of basara even more.
While on the eastern front, Fujos purchased doujins, plushies, cosplay material and every single piece of merch about Basara ever....but not the games, because they were too difficult to play to them compared to your average KOEI musou.
Thus, the series is dead in the west AND in the east.

Probably the best musou ever made.
It's just missing japan conquest mode from Utage that added so much replay value, but you can't beat it's improved performance + better visuals + returning cast of characters with even better moveset.
Maybe one day, Basara will come back.
But until then Utage and Sumeragi are still amazing games and i'm glad i got to play them and can replay them any time i want.

Basara 3 Utage and Basara 4 Sumeragi are immensly good.
Gameplay wise they take everything that worked and make it better.
Utage has the most replay value due to it's japan conquest mode, if you poured so many hours in vanilla 3, a very limited game, you'll probably bust a nut when you play that game.
4 Sumeragi doesn't have japan conquest, but as a trade off it's the one that looks the best, is the most refined core gameplay wise, and has new characters and returning characters with tweaked post-3 improved movesets.
So yeah, play the shit out of these games, don't just limit yourself to 3.
I know playing japanese games is daunting when you don't understand the dialogue, but the gameplay is well worth it.

If you have a good emulator, and your machine can handle it, by all means go ahead.
Some people emulate the Wii version using Dolphin because it's reliable, other people use other methods, i personally just imported and played it on my PS3.

The third game did get one. The problem was well, Capcom only ever did vanilla 3 and since it didn't well enough they never brought over Utage nor any game after it. And of course they never even bothered with 2 for whatever reason.

So obviously it flopped because people in the west didn't even know wtf a Basara is, and Capcom was like WELP GUESS BASARA HAS NO MARKET IN THE WEST THEN.
And that's about it.
I pray every single day for a multiplat big ass HD collection with a proper localization, even just one final global send off for the series, but we'll probably never get something like that.

Musou is more like it's trying to simulate and retell ancient history(to an extent) whilst also focusing on gameplay.
Basara is more focusing heavily on the gameplay whilst exaggerating the history.
I can see how one could like one over the other. You gotta realize too that there are characterfags Musou lovers that if they first play Basara, they're gonna be pissed at either how drastically different one character is from another, or the fact that MANY characters that they like aren't even in Basara at all. For instance, someone who likes Uesugi Kenshin in Musou may find it hard to like Kenshin in Basara who's a full blown trap instead of the manly man he is in Musou and a characterfag who likes Hanzo Hattori, a character who's been in the Musou games since the VERY first one, may not exactly like how he isn't in there at all, other than as a generic officer.

A big factor of the KOEI/Basara feud is that a lot of KOEI fans are chinaphiles and/or chinks or halfie azns themselves.
KOEI musou are the bread and butter of china, japan, and most of asia.
KOEI makes easy, quick to digest games that asians and half-asians love, it's their version of FIFA or EA yearly iterations more or less.
When something like Basara comes along, and it challenges the status quo with shit like

I hate so much what Koei's done to Shu. They focused more on Guan shit and Zhang Fei shit over the years and I fucking hate it. None of the Guans do anything of note other than getting killed by Pang De's son in the fall of Cheng Du and Zhang Bao gets killed earlier than that whilst not doing anything of note. They even recently put in two new Shu characters for DW9. One is Zhou Cang and the other Zhang Fei's fucking wife. Zhou Cang is a fanfic character like Guan Suo and just like Guan Suo, only exists to suck off Guan Yu and is basically Guan Yu's minion and Zhang Fei's wife literally did nothing but get kidnapped and bore him a child. She's literal lolibait.
Fucking hell Koei, I'm tired of this bullshit. Wei AND Wu's been getting some of the best additions ever in DW while Shu's just gets worse and worse. And on top of how horrible it is, because of characterfags, we won't get rid of these useless additions EVER. Only Fa Zheng and Xu Shu have been good additions to Shu for a long while, and the latter isn't even truly a Shu character, he literally spends more time working for Wei than for Shu.

DW5 was the last good game that felt like
a battlefield with your allies actually doing shit. DW8 was a return to form, not perfect but it was better than what they were doing before. Then DW9 happened. At this point, Koei-tecmo is just content on making cashgrabs with external IPs rather than staying true to what made the older Musou games likable. Oh well it was fun while it lasted.

I'm reminded of why Spirit of Sanada was more enjoyable than Yukimura-den.
With Yukimura-den capcom tried to tell a Koei style serious storyline with the Sanada clan with a lot of the over the topness subdued and it really clashed with Basara's style (especially when you're asking me to take Basara's Nobuyuki's relationship with his brother serious after looking at his design). SoS was actually well told and I enjoyed having the focus character growing along the story till his last stand.

Who the fuck wrote this game's plot and thought anyone would be invested in it? SB3 had actually serious plotlines and proved Yukimura can be more than a punching bag for Oyakata-sama but Yukimura-den was just all over the place.

Yukimura-den was really weird game as well. I thought new movesets will be even closer to proper action game but instead they were extremely boring and more braindead than regular Basara movesets. Masamune was the worst with those awful huge hitboxes where you hit everyone on screen with each attack.

I had more fun with the few hours of Sengoku Basara than I ever had playing the Dynasty Warriors games.
Maybe its just me but Sengoku Basara characters are miles more interesting and unique.
Even the anime was pretty decent.
Also funny enough the very last game I ever bought for my PS2 was Devil Kings, which I had no idea was actually a Sengoku Basara game.
Wish the series was still popular, as its probably my favorite anime/game series about the sengoku period.
