For the male characters taken straight from Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari, they're pretty conservative with the palette, but when it comes to characters like Shinji and Sabu (who were never drawn in the chibi-style in the actual Famicom games), they always go overboard with the palettes. And with females like Hasebe, Mami and Momozono, they paint their hairs with non-Famicom colors for some reason.

Thats not because its lacking moves or anything like that, its because it doesnt balance its moves or give them interesting unique utility and because the enemies are poorly designed and samey. For beat em ups a relatively small but multi purpose moveset is ideal because you can keep it under control and balance it well. Even Fight N Rage which has decent combo potential has a small moveset, it just uses it in a smart way.

It's gonna be a bit downhill from there though. I had a hard time going from Showdown to Tokyo Rumble because of the latters less intuitive controls and a weird difference in some gameplay mechanics. Funnily Showdown is pretty close in terms of control to Underground (Western SpinOff on the PC) but the latter might not be a good intro to the series.

You wish, throws are worthless because of the arc, enemy AI is all the same, enemies have iframes when they wake up groggy for no reason, every group in the game is easily looped with basic moves, enemies slide towards you on the z axis undermining positioning, weapons are worthless, "interact" button being binded to punch is dumb and gets in the way of combat, bosses are terrible across the board. But yes Rival Showdown is shit too

I don't think Kishimoto, who wrote Kunio-tachi no Banka, really gave much thought about the Downtown Nekketsu games that he wasn't involved with. The only thing to suggest that the Kunio-tachi no Banka is a prequel is the character bio in the manual claiming that he is only in his 2nd year of high school, when he is supposed to be starting his 3rd year in Nekketsu Monogatari.
