It was my first Castlevania and i thought the whole franchise sucked just like it. Then i played OoE and the franchise redeemed itself to me.

Symphony of the Night is much better, couldn't even be bothered to finish this one. Idk what zoomers see in it

Are vanias games fun? What is the appeal?

classicvania and metroidvania are basically completely different series and enjoyable for different reasons
so which are you talking about?

They are fun. Exploration feels good, getting weapons and magic feels good, enemies and enviroments are mostly unique ignoring the mooks.

Attached: Caos-soma-cruz-soul.jpg (770x750, 87K)

>classicvania and metroidvania are basically completely different series

Really I had no idea. The one's I'm talking about are i guess the metroidvanias? One's involving exploring and upgrading. What is the difference between classicvania and metroidvanias?

Exploring, finding new abilities and weapons. Backtracking cones with the territory unfortunately

Are there fast travel options to get around the backtracking?

depends on the game, but there's usually shortcuts you unlock as you progress on top of the potential fast travel points.
Bloodstained for example has both.

>fast travel
There are warps. And shortcuts. Sometimes.

There are teleporters in Metroidvanias, so yes, backtracking isn't as big of a issue as some make it out to be

okay, retard

Some games like OP's pic do yeah. Super Metroid for example doesn't have any though. Some rely on shortcuts you unlock with abilities you find but if you have a shit memory you can see an area of the map not explored and make your way over there only to remember you don't have the ability to pass through the roadblock. It differs on the game

>Bloodstained
Is Bloodstained a good starting point for metroidvanias? Also are these games known to have good stories?

Classicvania is all about having really tightly designed linear levels. Movement is usually pretty stiff and enemy layouts are very particular so it feels a bit more about strategy than straight up action. It's not like Megaman where quick reactions can compensate for a fuckup.

Metroidvania drops you in a huge open maze and you have to explore to find how to progress. There's usually a lot of different enemies to fight and weapons to collect, and mild RPG elements are common too. Exploration is fun because it's based on using your new powerups rather than just being key/lock "puzzles".
Depending on who you're talking to, Metroidvania can either mean the Castlevania games with this formula or the whole genre of these.

Yeah, they usually have warp points.
But the backtracking's important IMO, it's kind of a power trip to be able to go to old levels and blaze through them with all your new abilities. Not to mention to get past the obstacles you weren't able to before.

>Is Bloodstained a good starting point
Depends on your tastes. The castlevania games have a few different characters that play radically different, so based on what sounds more fun to you would be the best way to choose a game.

>Is Bloodstained a good starting point for metroidvanias?
It borrows heavily from the older Metroidvania's though if you can get past that then you can start with it. Personally i think a good starting point is Aria of sorrow for Metroidvanias

from this description metroidvanias sound more up my alley I think ill go with suggestion and start with Aria of sorrow

>buy Ascalon from the shop
>never have to use another weapon for the entire game
weak

It was the best soul ever.

Attached: triple skull souls.webm (960x640, 664K)

>Wasting your money on Ascalon when you can get Claimh Solais, instead saving that money for mimick soul money farming to get a soul eater ring
God this game is so much fun

>buying weapons from the shop
Only thing I ever bought from the shop was armor because half the fun of the game is getting a new weapon drop and trying it out while you're out exploring. Also potions because I was a shitter. They really trivialize the game

Who else did weapon only runs like the gun or the whip sword?

>Is Bloodstained a good starting point for metroidvanias?
I'd say fuck no, it's much easier to appreciate Bloodstained after playing older ones, it's quite a mess otherwise.
Aria of Sorrow or Symphony of the Night is really the go to, followed by at least 3 other games in any order (Circle of the Moon, Harmony of Dissonance, Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, Order of Ecclesia, Shaman King: Master of Spirits 1 and 2).

>Also are these games known to have good stories?
The things not depicted in the games sound much more interesting than the things that are. It's serviceable.

>Shaman King: Master of Spirits 1 and 2
theres a shaman king metroidvania??? holy shit i might play this before aria of sorrow i miss the fuck out of this show i loved it as a kid

>Also are these games known to have good stories?
It's good vs evil, fate being inevitable/changing fate disguised as Lovecraft shit, if you are into that then sure

KAGOME!

They're semi-metroidvania's published by Konami so they might as well count. The similarities between the two Master of Spirits games is huge, I recommend only playing the second one as it's the first but better. It features a soul system similar to that of Aria of Sorrow and the map is more like Order of Ecclesia, except areas are even more segmented apart, making them less memorable and more linear in progression compared to any other actual Metroidvania.

nah SCV4 is the worst

Attached: 174687876768.png (480x320, 125K)

yeah i was just reading reviews seems 2 just improved on what 1 did so ill just start with that one. Have you played them? Or has anyone else played Master of Spirits 2?

Fuck off with your shit. It's not even the same game you autist.

>tfw you see someone acknowledge a shitty and weird as fuck porn game you fapped to almost a decade ago

i've played both i'd say 1 is a guilty pleasure because sometimes it doesn't feel right jumping to the sequel right away (except for crash 1) so you don't miss much from 1 except for a few bosses but they return in a boss rush mode unlocked in 2 i'd say the levels in the first one are pretty empty till you get to the other levels later on but i actually have not finished both games yet since i don't have much time so im still semi at the beginning so i don't have much input, i liked the games so much i even bought myself a copy of Master of Spirits 1.

Who is the Miriam look alike? I like her chest

Fat Tits, Miriam's girlfriend.

I have played Master of Spirits 2 several times, if you see the game in a metroidvania thread it's probably me shilling it again. Never got myself to finish 1 though.
Might just be my bias on the game, I think it's really good.

That's a big butt!

PoR's final boss. There you go.

thanks anons im about to load MoS2 now you'll probably see me making a thread about the game later tonight

>tfw OoE had succubi
>none of them did this to shanoa as a grab attack
>shanoa can turn into a succubus
>she cannot do it either, just some leg twirl kick
It's been a decade and I still feel ripped off.

HoD > AoS > CotM
PoR > DoS > OoE

if i remember you have to tap one the shoulder buttons forgive me it's been a while but they don't really tell you i guess they wanted experienced vania players to figure that on their own i will share two of my favorite tracks from the first game

the church part was the only good scene

I like the plant trap at the start.
And the birthing scenes.
And the paintings.
And the iron maiden.

Does Demon's Crest count as a metroidvania?
I was having a lot of fun playing through it when they made it available on the Switch and it really gave me vibes of a metroidvania game with acquiring new abilities that gave you access to new places. The dark aesthetic also helped give it the Castlevania feel.

iron maiden and paintings are okay i guess
rest eh

Beat Bloodstained two days ago and Blasphemous yesterday.
I have played every single Castlevania and Metroid game, and I think most well known Metroidvanias. From the top of my head. Shadow Complex, Hollow Knight, Iconoclasts, Axiom Verge, Environmental Station Alpha, Ori, Gato Roboto, Guacamelee, Cave Story (although I do not consider it a Metroidvania), etc.

How do I quench my thirst for more? Any hidden gem I'm missing?

You have to start playing porngames, like Kurovadis.

>tfw the netflix show will likely never reach Soma even though that's the character the show's head said he would be the most excited for to adapt

Attached: rich evans.jpg (816x640, 58K)

They can just skip if they really want. Like season 3 is Curse of Darkness, Dracula is dead, so they just skip to 2000. Lord knows they've already changed a lot.
That said, I want to see a blank-staring sarcastic Shanoa animated, as well as Richter's speech.

no, your taste in porn is just shit

Attached: xD.jpg (1021x1233, 142K)

they're definitely going to be doing some skipping but I highly doubt they'll skip over SotN. I feel like they'll skip Simon since his story is probably the most straight forward of any of the Belmonts, unfortunately.

>that's the character the show's head said he would be the most excited for to adapt
neat

Attached: 454653634.jpg (800x450, 71K)

SotN is in a weird state, because I think the ending of season 2 ruined SotN's message. It SHOULD have been Trevor and Dracula 1v1'ing, but instead we got Dracula realizing he was a monster and dying to his son, which was how the SotN part should have ended.
So I have no fucking clue what they'll do for SotN's message.
Simon, Lament of Innocence, and maybe even Simon's Curse could be a season. You can totally do CV1 in two episodes, CV2 in two episodes, and LoI in like three.

Pharaoh Rebrith+
The touhouvania games

Blasphemous just came out. Anyone here try that yet?

Why is he so perfect, bros?

Attached: 1560817676429.png (5120x3840, 142K)

shit I didn't even know about this. videos of it look fun. I'll probably get it on my switch when it gets here next week.

based and dankmus pilled

They will skip any other Belmont besides Richter and they won't skip Sotn for obvious reason, though after that they can go straight to AoS

Hopefully they don't exaggerate that Soma is a spic exchange student and give him a silly accent like with Sypha

motherfucking Rabi Ribi

I thought Soma was a European transfer student

It's never stated where Soma is from, although from his surname and white skin you can guess he's Spaniard. In the original dialogue it's explicit he's Japanese, while in the localized versions he's an overseas exchange student without specifying where from.

It looks like it's holding a gun when you don't open the image.

How bad was Mirror of Fate?

>Want to see Portrait of Ruin adapted most of all because favorite game
>Not really telling any important story other than talking about the 1999 battle offhandedly
>Shanoa's a solo adventure with no one to bounce her deadpan emotionless vibe off of other than maybe extending the Albus scenes a bit, other than maybe some nice scenes with the villagers
>Soma's a possibility but they'd probably want to do Rondo+SOTN or something first for Richter and to build up the importance of the whip and belmonts in general being gone until Julius
>We will never get to see Julius Vs Soma with Julius shaking the entire castle with a Grand Cross while he's way past his prime and not putting full effort into it.

Kinda wish they were doing something other than Curse of Darkness, but oh well. Hector and Isaac's inclusion in the series was a welcome surprise. I imagine after it they'll probably pair up Rondo and Symphony, with a bit more of a focus on Rondo. Richter and Maria can bounce off eachother character wise easily while Richter's out to save his waifu, and you could totally plug in the speech as the climax moment. After that probably both of Soma's games.

Hey, don't look down on the monkeys!

Riichi.

Attached: Skeleton and Girl.webm (854x480, 985K)

Have they said anything about what game they're adapting for the third season? So far it's been Castlevania III with some element borrowed from SotN and CoD.

Attached: when crabs attack.png (3840x2560, 128K)

What should I play if I liked Symphony but didn't like the classicvanias or Aria?

I'd say give Portrait of Ruin a shot maybe. It's hard to really say without knowing what seems to turn you off from those games.

Aria just felt really boring and very similar to Symphony
Symphony I liked until the upside down castle
The classicvanias just frustrated me because of fucking annoying enemy placement

Symphony is the game with the most unique content, if that is what you want from the games. Otherwise I cannot figure out what would make you like symphony but not aria.

To be honest Aria feels relatively clunky and empty compared to SotN.
The NDS Castlevanias are very good and on the same level as SotN (to the point of reusing its sprites), although OoE takes a while to get good.

Pure kino

Both PoR and OoE has reused areas, and I assume a man that dislikes the inverted castle would think those are even more annoying. And I guess OoE could be considered having "annoying enemy placement"
Dawn of Sorrow should be his best bet then.
