Explorers is a straight upgrade in most ways. Sky is the Emerald style 3rd version with expanded content, so play that version.
Gates is a bit shitty.
Nobody remembers the WiiWare games for good reason.
Super is a little controversial, post people seem to view it as a return to form but it messes with the formula a bit. There's some good and some bad.

The only bad gameplay related thing that comes to the top of my head is building IQ which only allows you to invest in like 4 pokemon without a lot of grinding.

Got mf riolu (vulpix was my side hoe tho) and had more trouble on the dusknoir fight than the primal dialga fight, I fucking one shotted his primal ass with a violent seed. Also the fucking feels in this game man

The main story is a bit too easy, and the random dungeons can get repetitive after a while, but it's a good game.
