I enjoyed both and don't see the correlation. The only thing I can think of that actually is similar is saving Curly, but in Cave Story's case you are required to do that for the best ending.

I've tried twice and both times Last Cave kicked my ass, what a sudden jump in difficulty.

Toby has said in the artbook that the goats were all inspired by mimigas, he also mentions changing Toriel's design because it resembled mimigas too much.
The aspect of being trapped in a cave was inspired by brandish and not CS though

i never understood why everybody keeps memeing parallels between the 2, they are almost nothing alike.

the only similarities are a couple of sprites and maybe and ost, but that's it, they are completely different game and cave story is extremely overrated, it's literally a flash game with a great menu theme and good world-building.

They're good at different things.

While the controls are more simple they are also aren't as precise as Cave Story's controls making it's movement less satisfying (more momentum, can't shoot down, no booster, bigger sprites, ...)
