I don't think there's a problem with rivals being friendly, to a degree. Blue was kind of a jerk, but I think people overstate how much of one he was considering he still tended to give Red advice or point him in a direction.
But when it's getting to the point that the rivals stop you to heal your Pokemon, then battle you with weak Pokemon, and then suck your cock on the spot after you beat them easily, then that's pretty lame.
