Their designs were intentional juxtapositions for their personalities. Tifa has a more sporty, outdoorsy look with a more apparently voluptuous body. She's even the game's sole pugilist. But for all that she can throw down, she's meek, and worse yet, she's unsure of herself. But she wants to protect Cloud, in part, which is what allows him to degenerate. Aerith is modestly dressed, but outgoing and slick. She uses magic, which is typically reserved for those that aren't very outgoing, but she's the most emotionally mature and proactive of the bunch. She helps Cloud come out of his "shell," layered as it was. I'm a Tifafag, but I also really do love Aerith. The problem is that most people never played the second half, so they can't see what good Tifa does for Cloud, et al. But this is a different game, and there's a lot being added to it. Our crew are now labeled as Wutai terrorists, which makes Wutai and the rest of the world much less of an afterthought. Tifa does seem strong, but timid and unsure. Aerith does seem outgoing and charming. That much is true. I think the general aspects you'd expect for these characters are all there. But there will be many additions. I would be surprised if Tifa won many hearts by the end of the (finished) game. Just as I wouldn't be surprised if the inevitable loss of Aerith hurts more than the first time. Hell, I see a lot of people mourning Jess and company because they're definitely getting more fleshed out here. But back on the Tifa/Aerith debate: I don't get why it exists at all. Both girls represent different parts and aspects of Cloud's life and health, and both do a lot of good for him. They both have that "girl next door" appeal on different ends of that spectrum. They're both strong and caring. I prefer them both to Yuffie, who doesn't do much at all for the plot of the original game. But everyone loves Yuffie for her design alone. Yet it's a sin to like Tifa, who has more going on. I just don't get it.
