The main problem is that the punch button and the action button are mapped to the same key. So if you are fighting an enemy close to a door (which happens very often) you will accidentally get out of the room. The same thing happens when you want to pick up a weapon close to an enemy

Yes even, if you just flatten the arc the throws will still be shit, they need some iframes. If you add a buffer to enemy attacks the player can lock down groups with basic punches without even getting behind them, if you shorten the amount of time they spend waking up without adding a buffer the game becomes about dodging the minefield of lying enemies you've set up. I fixed the throws, removed the wake up attacks, decreased and randomized wake up timers (giving enemies unique ones is pointless because you're fighting clones most of the time anyway) and the game was still boring. What needs to be done in addition to that is increasing enemy aggression, upping their movement speed a little bit, doubling or even tripling their spawn rates and decreasing their HP. Otherwise you're fighting 4 enemies that are easily dominated and helpless no matter what.

I don't feel throws need i-frames if you flatten the trajectory. You can just throw into whatever enemy is going to attack you. Good point about the wake up thing though. The "fixed" throws bit was a bit of an exaggeration since what I did was just get the wake up iframes to activate at the start of the throw, which was pretty silly since they're on a static timer, and they ended up being janky so I disabled all that shit. There's some global variables for enemy evasion but you're right I don't remember anyone but those cheerleaders doing it. If you want to experiment download dnSpy and look at the code yourself

Difference is some games have challenging enemies that demand tactics and prioritization, tight combat mechanics where moves have distinct uses, varied encounters coming from good enemy design, etc. RCG is the same enemy AI stretched out for 5 hours, a lot of the time you're fighting 4 copies of the same exact enemy to boot, so even that little bit of attack variety is gone.

One biggest flaws with the way the game is designed is that all of the entrances require you to press X to use them, but that also happens to be the game's basic attack button. So anytime you zone in, if you start pressing X to combo an enemy who spawns right next to the door you'll find yourself being sent to the area you were just at. This is a very, very, very basic game design element that I'm surprised wasn't fixed in even the alpha. Even something as simple as mapping the command to another button would make combat less of a problem as you now have to run away from the area's entrance before you can start fighting every time.

Really gives the impression that the game's playtesters were asleep at the wheel while the VA's were being sucked off.

The difference is that Kyoko and Misako were established to be Kunio's and Riki's girlfriends in Kunio-tachi no Banka (with Misako being from another game prior to that) and the twist ending only exists because the game's director and writer thought that Misako and Kyoko were the same girls from River City Ransom until someone at ASW corrected them.

Am I retarded, or is this game hard? I've never been super skilled at beat 'em ups but I've completed a few in my time like the old scott pilgrim on, and I felt like challenging myself on this one but I feel like I get absolutely swamped by enemies half the time and the inputs feel sort of clunky or unreliable, like sometimes your attacks don't work at the same range or vertical placement but then they do and then you accidentally pick something up etc etc. Is this game's combat just kind of janky or am I retarded? I'm playing on the higher difficulty, so I don't know if it really is just too hard for me

That kind of attitude is what annoys me greatly. Reminds me of Blazing Chrome and how patch for GOG version came out about 20 days later than Steam version. Not to mention that the devs initially were silent and answered question about GOG version of the game on fucking Steam forums

most of the timing is off and its slightly laggy on input so it just feels hard.
Most people beat it by spamming the same combo over and over again. Only problem is the combo involves a knockdown and the enemies take a good 3 seconds real time to get back into a position where you can hurt them.

Having some extra awareness helps. Try to keep all the enemies to one side of you, and pay attention to where items and area transitions are so you don't pick up something or leave the zone when you don't mean to.

Understand which attacks have wider hitboxes and when to lead in with a jumping light attack to make your combo easier to get going. There seems to be some jankiness in that your hitboxes or their hurtboxes extend once they start getting hit.

From what I understand, hard difficulty increases the amount of enemies, but not their health or damage.

Why would the game ever allow you to pick up something or leave a zone when you don't mean to?
Explain how that is even functionally possible.

Yeah, kind of are. Press X, X, X, Y and that'll make enemies dizzy when they wake up. Use your side B to give yourself space if needed. It's not that hard.

No, it isn't. From the beginning of the game, every enemy in the school will get stunned with the XXXY combo, and from there you grab them, knee/punch them a couple of times and throw to finish them.

the pennies get deposited either way.

I haven't been able to test against the bigger/tougher enemies outside of the school on hard mode yet, but by then you should be able to stick in some harder hitting specials or directional Y hits to continue getting that stun.

The big problem comes in when you're dealing with large groups and they all have inconsistent health between them, so you end up with some of them getting up stunned while others just get up and hit you.

You know, I realize now that not keeping the boys Part 3 JoJo character builds is a missed opportunity for even some jokes.

Like Kyoko or Misako flashing pictures to ask about them and the odd commentary of "is your relationship even legal!" and possibly even explain that the 'kidnapping' photo was the police questioning them because they could not believe Kunio and Riki were actually teenagers and saw them with Hasebe and Mami.
