start by any game but EoSD, LoLK or SA since those are already played to death

bamo

Do them in chronological order starting with 6

Just start at 6 like a normal person so you get used to no hitbox, which in turn will make the sequential games far easier as you'll naturally have better judgement

Starting with EoSD is ok as long as you continue along with the series. PCB and IN are both fantastic games. Read the printed works if you are a lorefag, play the fightans if you’re a fightanfag, look at the fan work and music, don’t act like you know what you’re talking about in the fandom, and hold shift for focused movement.

Is SA hard? Or am I retarded?
I 1cc'ed 6, 7, 8 and 10 but I can't get past stage 4 in SA

>Start
4 [Requires an emulator], 7, 8 and 10 are good jumping on points due to relatively lower difficulty curves. Don't be ashamed to play on Easy to get your feet wet.

>Essential Characters
Reimu and Marisa, the two at the forefront of your image. The rest tend to ebb and flow in importance depending on the game unless you want the deep lore stuff.

>Lore
A section of the Japanese countryside has been isolated off by the Hakurei barrier as a means to contain the Youkai and other rabble-rousers that would cause problems for the rest of the world. Reimu, guardian of the barrier, is now tasked with keeping track of the section now called Gensokyo and resolving the incidents that crop up while also trying to maintain her failing shrine.

>where to start?
EosD the sixth game is a regular starting point for many
>essential characters?
The red and white girl with a bow and the black and withe witch, that's it
>lore?
Hold shift for focused movement

Start with the windows games, specifically either TH6 or TH7. The first five on the PC98 can be ignored. They aren't bad, but they're incredibly dated and not that relevant to the series today. Play those later if you're interested in it's roots. For lore you'll want to read official written stuff by ZUN. But you'll want to be a least somewhat familiar with what happens in the games since there will be references to the events that happen in them.

>using an emulator
is it worth it?

>Implying casuals would want to take time setting up the PC-98 emulator instead of playing the canon gamesfrom the get-go

The emulators aren't hard to use; you've just got to remember your folder paths. And don't start that; 3 onward have been directly referenced in Windows era. It's just that Alice got some retcons and Yuuka lost her mansion.

Regardless, I don't think it's worth playing them from 1 onwards. HRtP plays entirely different to the rest with some pretty absurd maneuvers required for a beginner, SoEW is better but some might get confused after the gameplay style of PoDD but then it starts to remain constant for the most part. If someone wants to play for the danmaku then it's probably best to start from the classic era onwards before delving into the retro stuff if they're interested.

Yes. SA is pretty hard. Most shots are also a bit weaker than usual, and the game is pretty punishing on mistakes on the bosses.

Play the games. Read the lore. Listen to the ost and/or the remixes available for every music genre. Play the fangames, watch the porn and non-porn fanmade content. Etc.... Or just enjoy the old school memes and cute girls with silly hats and a mean attitude.

It's so fucking massive that you're bound to find an aspect of it that you like. Just pick something to start with and the rest will follow.

Fuck off

This is all you need to know about Touhou. Don't listen to everyone else here, Touhou is about the doujin movement, not the games.

EoSD is the first in the current continuity, no-one will blame you for skipping 1-5.
The smoothest entry point would probably be PCB since EoSD is paleo-cpu epoch and PCB is a way smoother experience.

>saying that PC-98 isn't canon
I dare you to be that brave in /jp/

Play Perfect Cherry Blossom. It's fairly easy.

Some is some isn't

EoSD started the fire and despite being an unpolished mess it's worth it just to understand why it got popular
PCB is a good game and honestly the best entry point for the series.
IN is pure kino. You have to play the other 2 games to get all the kinography it has to offer. Best 2hu game to date.

2hus are actually mostly just mediocre PC doujin shooters, but IN is a very good game on all accounts, and playing 6-7-8 is the quintessential 2hu experience straight out of 2004.

Just by starting the game and hearing the very few first notes of the Stage 1 Theme you can understand that IN is absolute kino

Right in the nostalgia

Still my favorite Stage 1 Theme, now i gotta play IN.

PCB's stage 1 theme is more kino.

For me, it's

Could anyone share some cute Moko x Kaguya doujins?

Have you seen this one?

The only one I know is one where they both fuck a shota. I don't know if that qualifies as cute for you

When should I attempt Extra stages?

When you can either 1cc Lunatic or come close.

Don't start
Run immediately

As soon as you can if you want to chat with the extra boss and find out more about the lore
If you want to actually complete it keep in mind that the difficulty is between a hard and lunatic 1cc

After beating Normal. They're harder than Normal, but easier than Hard

Some of them are easier than others though. Ran and Suwako are on the easier side, for example, while pic related and Hecatia are fucking hard.

>Ran
What about Phantasm stage (are they called like this?) like Yukari?

I'm sorry but nothing tops Hakurei ~ Eastern Wind for Stage 1 themes. It's the perfect way it ramps up to show the shift in pace and focus from HRtP and then just keeps ramping up getting you pumped to blast through the ghosts and flower tank until you hit Rika proper.

Phantasm is a PCB exclusive thing. It's like hard mode but for the extra stage.
I recommend trying to beat Phantasm after you beat Extra because the patterns are fairly similar.

Yukari is so similar to Ran that by then you should already know everything she does. Some of her cards are a bit harder, one or two are a bit easier, and she has 1 more card, but that's it.

>playing a generic shmup

Out of all possible complaints, you chose the worst one to throw at the series

Some of us like having actual patterns and not just hitbox abuse in our shmups.

Junko is the most beautiful 2hu

Respectable. But wrong.

Say what you want about the drawing and game engine, but ZUN does make some pretty and interesting patterns

Forget the ones which needs emulators since those aren't even canon, just choose anything that comes after 5. Also, here's the wiki full of content (at the end). Also, the followings are fighting game 7.5, 10.5, 12.3 (the best), 13.5, 14.5 and 15.5 (most fun). And from the mangas (although there is no anime) I recommend Touhou Suzunaan, Touhou Sangetsusei and Touhou Ibarakasen.
