To be fair, Sans and Undertale in general is apparently quite popular in japan gaming communities, so that probably helped bust through the regional barrier.
So while we have Banjo as a character and we have Sans as a costume, it does outright mean we'll be getting a bunch of western stuff.

I disagree, mostly because Bayonetta exists, who is mostly brought up for her sexual nature, but she also loves eviscerating her enemies into gorey chunks and bloody mist in her own games.

At least he's from a turn based game, that's also, by design... generic? I don't want it to come out as insulting, but I'd consider it the Mario of RPGs, not in world wide popularity but in that they're simple distillations of their respective genre. You don't get a lot to draw from when you consider those two factors.
Though the only DQ I've played is 3 so maybe I'm wrong there and there's some amazing moveset potential that I don't know about.
