What do you mean? Some animations are a little awkward but that's it. There's a dodge, parry, melee attack, gun attack, traps, magic. All functions as expected. I'm actually pretty impressed with combat.

Nah. With science 2 you can craft ammo, get 5 per craft and you can buy the stuff for it for 1 gold at like every merchant and it keeps replenishing. You aslo get lot of it from exploring. So just fire away.

The game seems designed with a controller in mind to me.
How is it worth it?
The game doesn't have any kind of manual aiming that would make a mouse useful, and the default controller setup comes with I think 12 custom binds on the face buttons and d-pad, which are more than enough. I only use 4, and I've never had to use the tactical pause thing at all.
I'm sure it works fine with a keyboard and mouse, but I'm not seeing any advantages.

There are Axes, Swords and Maces in 1/2 hand varieties. Swords do more raw health damage, while Axe/Maces do more damage to armor.

Guns are just ranged weapons that do a balanced amount of damage compared to blades/blunt. They have limited ammo, but most of the time it's a non issue, unless you make your guy built around guns. You can switch between all three weapons at any time, so leveling all three is recommended if you want to be a straight fighter type.

Also there's magic and bombs and shit, but I haven't tried them out so far.

The bridge alliance ambassador flat out lied to get rid of a guy he had a personal problem with and the religious leader wanted me to persecute heretics which isn't a crime in Serene. I ended every side quest diplomatically and sided with the Nauts though. They seem cool, plus you don't want to piss off a guy you're gonna be spending the next seven months on a ship with.

There's no point in levelling all 3 as far as I can tell. You'd do far more damage with lots of points in one of them, different enemies don't seem to require different weapons or anything like that.

There's a coat in a chest in the bunkhouse where you speak to the cabin boys friends. Buy the boots and gloves from the merchant.

I did the same in terms of saving the heretics, but if you lie to them and just say the Bridge Alliance got to them first then you gain reputation with the Theleme instead of pissing them off for no reason.

You need science lvl 1, you can buy all the ingredients from the merchant. If you dont have science lvl 1, IIRC there might be some equipment that grants that, or you could modify your existing equipment to give that bonus.

You dont actually have to use the laced drink, there's another non-violent solution.

Max heavy armor plus maxed out healing magic, craftsmanship, and heavy weapons with a bit of traps. I cannot die, my companions are now elite death squads, and armor evaporates in my presence.

For new players or people who are just starting, try to get ANY NAUT OUTFIT right away, you'll need it for like 12 fucking missions in the start of the game and it makes everything super fucking easy. You don't even have to sneak around, just walk into the restricted areas and the guards won't do shit to you.

I just unlocked Petrus, so want to try him out. though he's a mage so not sure how well he is, though it'd be nice to have mage in my party and maybe Sinoa for healing or Vasco for poisons and guns, though my character is a poison gun user as well.

Sadly the "shit" on your face is part of the story and can't be removed, though you can give your character a manly rugged beard to cover it I suppose.

CHR supposedly increases the strength of teammates, though I'm not sure by how much, also make sure you upgrade their weapons and armor. For some reason a lot of players never do this because of laziness, and then they wonder why their party members die.

If I go for guns, do I get to use the rifle for instance as a main weapon? As in, it's no longer an ability but an actual weapon like the melee weapons?

The combat is solid. It's more or less a simple action game with 3 attacks, dodges and parries, but also has pause menu to give specific commands and the option to set hot keys if you don't want to break the flow of the game.

It takes a little getting used too, but works fine on either Controller or KB/M once you rebind the default controls. It's no Bloodborne or Kingdom Hearts, but nowhere near as bad as say Gothic or The Witcher 1.

As a reference point, I'd say it's a little better than Witcher 2, but not as good as 3.

I hate to brag, but I was really proud of myself for killing it alone after it destroyed my teammates. Unlocking rolling really helped for movement, also I had like 80 bullets saved up so I just spammed my gun and laid down a bunch of explosive traps and poison traps. I tried to get some quick slashes in on it, but yeah, my gun shots stripped like one point of armor for each shot. After to strip it's armor then it takes a shit ton more damage, can't remember what level I was.

I know I was underleveled that's for sure, like I want to say I was level 8, or so. Apparently using magic against it makes the fight a lot easier, but when you have things like stasis and magic missile you can just freeze it, regen mana, and spam magic missile over and over until it dies.

Takes more skill to kill it with melee/traps/guns then killing it with magic, but yeah, if you're struggling with it then just switch to magic.

Just bind it to something easy and only use that. There's no meaningful difference between an ability and an "actual weapon". I use only guns and traps myself.

I just did the same thing. I got half his armor down then he jumped me twice and I died. Level 12 currently

You can see how well a weapon strips armor on the stats. It's to the right of the damage. Traps can be upgraded with skills points to also strip armor pretty well. If you have craftsmanship you can specifically upgrade weapons to do more damage or more armor stripping as well.

Beware that though Firearms are powerful (both for raw damage and deconstructing armor, plus for some nice effects), but ammo scarcity is a real issue. Having a supplementary class with renewable resource is recommended.

That's just the nature of the beast. Hint: Magic ignores Armor altogether.

I was doing the Hikmet quest where the caravan was attacked. While fighting these islanders, one fell off this cliff, which is out of range of his usual spot. Because he is out of range, he is supposed to return, but he isn't using the ladder just stuck there. Standing next to him alerts him to me, but he doesn't react. Attacking him over and over doesn't kill him either.

I did arena on level 5 on extreme and there is really nothing too challenging about level disparity so far. Tactical pause is actually very cool, almost feels like kotor but more responsive.
