These name changes, along with things like "Butz" to "Bartz" and "Balflear" to "Balthier" were done deliberately by Square to make them sound more appealing to western audiences and/or to better represent the character to an English-speaking world. For example, Tina was changed to Terra because her name was supposed to sound exotic and foreign, but "Tina" is a totally normal name in America so they changed it to preserve the intent. "Aeris" was an accident made by a guy who was under an extremely tight deadline, wasn't able to communicate with the Japanese devs about what their intention for the name was, and later admitted that it was a mistake and that something like "Earith" would have been closer to the original intent.
