I would go so far and say it's one of the most fascinating "new" (although it's almost 20 years old, but you get my point) sci fi ips. It's not high literature, but I can see the books being popular even without the game, Eric Nylund saw it clearly as a passion project, same as the writer of the Forerunner books, which are miles above the 343 games.

But Halo can work without chief. Everyone here loves ODST and Arbiter has almost as many fans as Chief himself and was the more interesting protagonist in 2 (it was even about the Arbiter in general, all the Chief segments just felt like filler to show what the humans are up to).

The Forerunner novels are pure drivel, some of the worst science fiction I have ever had the misery of reading. Most of the history it adds (or more appropriately, crudely grafts) to Halo's lore is tired cliche shit at best and unfathomably retarded at worst. I can't describe how much despair I felt, personally, when I realized it wasn't just Bornstellar-Makes-Eternal-Lasting being some obnoxious faggot narrator who loves the smell of his own ass - it was the author himself, and the entire 3 novel series would be written that way.

The anniversary / mcc version of Halo CE is a failure because it is based on the half assed PC port. There are a lot of graphical issues that are there at a fundamental level. But it was easier than using the original xbox release of CE, so they went with what was easier rather than making a quality product for modern systems.
343i cuts corners, is unoriginal, and is now going to try to use fan service to earn the player base back. Which usually ends up not working out in most cases when franchises do that.
