>all those forum posters and AVGN wannabes who used an edited Mega Man sprite of themselves as their avatar
Good god, don't remind me. That sprite has forever been ruined for me because of that.

Nostalgia

This looks nice, what fangame is this?

I geel bad for people who had to grow up with pixelshit 1984 crap. I'm pretty thankful growing up with ps2 and xbox Chad games, but I guess gaming had to start somewhere.

Might just be a Mega Man Maker level.

This. Every element of the sprite is clearly defined. It's simple and to the point.

Don't forget the webcomics.

At least one of you fucks used this as an avatar at some point, don't lie

So should I buy the MM Legacy Collection 2 or the MMX Legacy Collection first?

You won't get an angry response out of me, Zoomer. I'm an open-minded Baby Boomer born in 1987 who loves everything from the NES to the current gen and is eagerly anticipating the PS5.

Bob and George was pretty popular back in the day.

X.

7 and 8 are good for variety, but 9 and 10 are really just more of the same of the NES games.

X you start with the best X game, and while 2/3/4 are slightly worse (like 8/10s vs 10/10s), they each keep adding more stuff to the game to keep things fresh.

That said, both are solid to get.

It’s his long feet

Hi CIA

Collection 2 because then you get to play MM9

Both are good, but you'll get more out of the first one, since it's 6 games instead of 4.

Look at that face. he gives no fucks.

Why are the legs asymmetrical?

That was and remains the design of Seanbaby's website. I just had to double-check to make sure Seanbaby still had a website, and I'm shocked to find out that it does indeed still exist. Writing four articles a year for Cracked must pay really well.

It’s probably because you spend so much time with it trying to git gud. Plus the color pallet in those games is just simple and nice to look at in general.

It always makes me smile. I think it has to do with the face. He's cute but still a bit goofy looking due to the limitations of the sprite. I can't help but like it.

forgive me for bringing up smash, don't wanna derail anything
i get that they wanted to use the nes sprite for megaman's idle animation in smash but i think he suffers because of it
its just the lack of expression and stiff movements take away from his character he showed in more recent titles

It's actually hot because it looks like he's wearing a diaper.

I think Smash Bros Megaman was my breaking point for NES nostalgia. It makes him unique, but at the expense of any and all personality. Megaman isn't beep boop robot silent protagonist and I really would have liked to have bouncy happy promotional art Megaman instead.

>Harpuia's EX skill in 2
AAAAHH

I feel ya, personally I'm partial to the taller Mega Man seen in 4's artwork and up.
Haven't played Ultimate yet, but I hear he shows more personality in his animations so that's cool.

He blinks. That actually blew my mind back in the day as no other games had that detail in their main character back then.

Take the design from 11 and give him less stiff animations, and you've got a stew going.

>Light so advanced he actually made his sprites canonically more advanced than other NES games

The bastard was playing 4D chess with Wily. He can't be stopped.

He's a fucking robot. He shouldn't even need to blink. Light is a fucking hack.

According to Mega Man's creator
>You know, just the image of Mega Man standing there: there’s a sadness to it. Even his sprite has a certain gravity and seriousness to it. How can I put this… for me, when I see a young child playing alone, in a park or in the middle of the street, playing by himself there… there’s something so sad about that sight, it can almost bring me to tears. And there’s something similarly lonely about Mega Man.

>For example, in the backstory I wrote, Mega Man alone is equipped with the functionality to turn himself off. That very fact imbues him with a sadness. The other robot masters were made for some kind of specific job or work, so there’s no need for them to have an “off switch” they can control. However, a robot helper like Mega Man can make his own judgments, and therefore can decide whether he’s needed or not. That bit of backstory also reflects the serious feeling in the writing that you mentioned you liked. The sadness of being a robot is having this inorganic existence

Why is the internet so obsessed with sexual identity?

based shota lover

X and onwards may have a borderline retarded story but Light being ahead of his time is canon.

When is protoman going to get his own game?

Attached: 1508749833974.png (946x946, 687K)

Just play 9 and 10.

It's because he wanted an adoptive son in addition to being a robot.

When someone gets autistic enough to create an entire fangame based around The prologue song of Protomen Act I

He's got that Terminator-esque death stare. Never cracking a smile, never looking at the screen and saying "just what I needed!", just moving forward and killing everything in his path.

Does Protoman even have a style? His DLC in 9 is just Megaman but with the slide.

In Powered Up he has the shield which tanks a hit but you have to pick it up afterwards, and his default buster has the power of a charge shot and is gigantic.

>being cool
>whistling
>throwing his shield
>shade wearing abilities
>sliding

It doesn't matter what his """style""" is he's cool as fuck. The guy wears sunglasses and stands on top of buildings at night. Why does he even wear sunglasses? He is a robot, he shouldn't need them!

My guy also has a badass scarf.

Man, I stood on top of a building at night once.

Shit was fucking awesome.

I've not played 9 or beyond for the classics but I feel it would be cool if protoman had less health than megaman but his shield could tank a certain amount of damage, but would have a cooldown before being used again

I think part of why they went with this kind of Mega Man design is that they wanted him to be a certain size and having him be like MM8 promo art would have made him too tall. NES sprite is more box-like and the buster pellets are also a good size compared to him. They probably also wanted to avoid having to do voice lines for him, and emulating his NES look was as good an excuse as any. Outside of not screaming in (simulated) pain and not shouting out his weapons' names, I don't really get the 'not emotive enough' complaint either. He still has plenty of facial expressions when you do his moves and if you get hit by shit.

Mega Man is har-

If you guys want expressive, you're going to the wrong megaman

Attached: your clothes give me them.jpg (600x450, 53K)

In Megaman 9 and 10 Protoman takes double damage but can use his shield to deflect pellets, can charge his buster and can slide. It's a pretty fun gameplay style.

9 and 10 are better than the NES games especially 9. Inti makes better Megaman games than Capcom

this
9 was a miracle IMO

NES Megaman is really weird
He looks somehow more like an adult even though Megaman is supposed to be a little kid

Sprites on the NES could only have 4 colors, one of which had to be rendered transparent. How many colors does Mega Man's sprite have?

His face is actually a separate sprite.

I know, it's amazing what Capcom did to get the most out of the NES hardware.

That's actually a fairly common trick, for truly impressive NES programming you should check out something like Metal Storm.

He kinda looks pissed but he's cute, unnaturally tense arms-legs position. He also opens his mouth in an uncomfortable manner when jumping while stretching his arms. He's a bit awkward.

TOKUSENTAI TOKUSENTAI TOKUSENTAI TOKUSENTAI

I don't mind him aping the animations, but the expressions are way too stiff. Especially when he opens his mouth while jumping, and it's just a black void. Creepy shit.
Meanwhile Simon apes a lot of his NES sprites but still emotes like a normal person while doing it. Mega Man could have been so much better than this, it's a shame.

I believe one of Light's goals with designing robots was to make them endearing and feel like people. It can be difficult to get along with an unblinking, emotionless robot even if it has the best intentions.

I wouldn't be surprised if his glasses are some sort of fancy visor, or a scanner or something.

Nostalgia

>Meanwhile Simon apes a lot of his NES sprites but still emotes like a normal person while doing it.
A lot of that comes from the fact that he rips most of his moveset and animations besides the Belmont strut from Richter, so he's got more PC Engine and PS1 DNA in him than pure NES. Meanwhile Megaman, other than his Smash-original attacks, only pulls from MM7 and Power Fighters for stuff like Slash Claw and his shoryuken, at which point he immediately switches to the respective body language and becomes noticeably less stiff. Simon's a hybrid in that regard compared to Megaman's purity that only breaks game accuracy for a handful of attacks.

Thought that was an old man's face for a minute.

One of life's many questions, is it not?

I mean, can we just shut up about transsexuals for 5 seconds?

>taking pride in being a zoomer

That's like being proud of being poor.

This is X Collection 2 by the way

Originally, Mega Man wasn't really a "kid". He was just a super-deformed looking character no different than Mario or Link. It was just the popular art style in games at the time. It would be more accurate to describe him as a teen, kind of like Tsubasa or Seiya. Only drawn super-deformed.

Good for clarifying, was gonna nab that up quick but I'd feel bad for taking that if theres someone who wants it more that could get it, the later X games aren't for me

Got it, thanks

The shit they got away with. No longer.

He’s one of the few NES era sprites that has a defined mouth and eyes

First I've seen that one. The only sprite I've ever seen doing that dance is the black mage from FF1.
