I think the new desktop version doesn't compress as much anymore. Luckily most people I follow also have pixiv but then is a pain to go there every single time. On the other hand less people are using pixiv so I'd rather just save from Twitter.

Yep. And since Twitter's new shitty forced tablet layout on desktop users, it's impossible to get around since you can no longer add :orig at the end of Twitter images to get the least compressed version available. Best you get is whatever arbitrary bullshit "name=large" gives you.
Shame so many artists don't give a shit about this compression and use Twitter exclusively to post their art. Japanese artists ESPECIALLY.

What you do is follow/retweet art people and glorify their work like it's made by Leonardo. Also do the same for accounts that are the same size as yours. Post hot fresh memes works too.

You can still change the new format to orig. There's also a plugin to turn it back into the older version because as you said, the new mobile-like desktop Twitter is fucking horrible. Absolutely everyone I follow complained about how stupid it was.
