It seems like a series that belongs back in the 7th generation with its lack of color, cover shooting and regenerating health.

I only played the first and thought it was alright. I don't remember anyone talking about the 4th one and just found out today that they made a prequel game in 2013.

The original games really were brutal, and you could feel the characters slugging each other.

I feel that that is a problem with narrative-focused titles, or at least ones with where a sizable amount of attention is on the single player story, that once the proverbial war is won there's no reason to keep going but they still make more. If there's no reason to make a part 4 to a trilogy then they need to do something different. If you make a trilogy, then you need to have the ending allow for a potential fourth entry down the line but still be a satisfying end with 3, like how Halo 3 did.
Did Gears 3 do that? As I said, I only played the first. I know 4 and 5 take place decades later, but does it feel like a logical follow up or does it solely exist to be a cash grab like the Star Wars sequels?

I think M$ is afraid to make new big budget IP so they keep relying on ones that are past their prime and quickly are running out of ideas.
