Seems to be I'm about 10 hours in and it feels like it's heading that way.
There are six in game factions that each have opinions of you. Doing some missions in a certain way can upset some factions whilst making other factions like you more etc.

The combat system is absolutely god awful. Specially on KB+M. The movement animations are just so fucking stiff and unresponsive. I've pressed shift to run away, but my character ran forward before shifting backward to run, in turn it got me hit and 2 shotted by some spiked dog looking shitlog. The damage of Magic is terrible. It starts off giving you "Haha these guys die easily, shit I should turn the difficulty up to Extreme" - Then you get a bit further in the game to Hizmat(sp?) and you get your shit pushed in by being 2 shotted.

Your friendly AI is absolute dogshit. They don't heal, they don't use potions, you can't choose what spells you want them to have. They can barely damage enemies enough before dying.

Graphics are alight, but it's hard to go wrong with the engine they're using.

Animations. Facial animations are just... Bad. I rarely paid attention when I started seeing their eyeballs coming through their eyelids when they blinked, or their face slide through the side of their collars on the coats.

It's a 5/10 game for me.

Fix the movement, fix the unbalanced combat, and it'd go to a 7/10.

There doesn't seem to actually be an over arching story in the ten hours I've played so far in comparison to say with Mass Effect or Dragon Age other than go do diplomatic stuff. But the lore feels quite rich and a few of the side missions have had quite interesting stories.
This game has used its quests to reveal its lore you; learn how faction x functions due to a quest where you the PC discovers that for themselves, it's very organic I guess for lack of a better word.

I can't wait to totally fuck over my motherland and break all truces to side with the natives and REMOVE all colonist scum. GENOCIDE THE COLONIST NOW.

overall agreed with this post. the setting is neat but there are some things that really hold it back. the combat is one of them, it just feels really basic and not very satisfying. and you're right about the animations, maybe Witcher 3 has spoiled me but almost every RPG since then has disappointed me in terms of animations and face rigging especially. I could forgive Witcher 3's flawed combat because the story, characters, and presentation were just great. Greedfall doesn't excel in any of these areas. I really want to sink into another good RPG, but its just really lackluster.

What a fucking rush. Fuck magefags, honestly magic is easy babby mode in this game. I have way more fun setting traps, dodging, and blasting people with my rifle. Rogue playstyle is best playstyle. I'm doing pretty big damage for someone who is level 12 I guess, like my fury attack does around 750 and my regular sword attacks do 400-500. I wasn't doing nearly that much when I tried out magic, though I guess you need to put a lot of points into mental powers and shit to upgrade the damage.

I'm rekting shit with my rogue build I know that.

Greedfall is a good RPG from what I can tell. Put on faction specific outfits to sneak around their areas without provoking them, drug guards with medicated alcohol, bribe people to look the other way, use unique dialogue related to character perks. The only rpg mechanic it falls flat on is the combat and even then it's not particularly bad it's just just incredibly mediocre.

It's like the inverse of outward. Outward is a giant mostly empty world with no real reason for exploration and no driving narrative but relatively interesting/fun gameplay systems. Greedfall is a linear narrative game pretending to be open world with mediocre gameplay systems.

What is your playstyle, user? Obviously take the ones that line up with your playstyle. If you're doing alchemy and traps then take science and intuition. If you're doing mage then obviously take the magic talents like Willpower and Mental Power or whatever. If you're doing melee I guess craftsmanship and vigor, honestly the only reason to take CHR is if you want to pass CHR checks and talk your way out of everything, also it raises party member stats, so yeah.

It all depends on your combat style and how you plan to play the game.

Even on the lowest settings I was only getting 20-30fps in the starting area on my PC with major stutters, so I refunded. I'd get it on my Xbone S, but I can't imagine it'd be much better. Game does look fun, though.

Alchemy is great for AoE damage, throwing phials and bombs at demons and bandits. I feel like a lot of people are overlooking or underestimating guns and alchemy in this game. They all want to go pure MAGE because, ya know, magic blah blah blah.

I'm not even touching magic on my character, honestly I tried it out and didn't care for it. Stasis is strong, but magic missile spamming is boring and the other spells looked boring.

Two handed heavy weapons feel pretty nice. It's cool to send people reeling or plant them into the ground with every swing.

I already cleared the prologue area, the new serene quests and the sora's tribe area, still haven't met any of the ambassadors on the other towns

Even if you lie in the "nice guy" option you generally get a +0 or +1 to reputation while the asshole option gives you +3. Since you start with negative rep with every faction you're not getting out of suspicious very quickly without being a boot licker.

I could already tell at the very start what kind of game and direction this would go in. Doing all the "right" stuff usually is harder then just telling lies to everyone.

Its at least better than the dullest RPG of all time. Each attempt Obsidian makes to create their own universe rather than simply deconstruct a setting made by others, has been more disastrous than the last. Aside from the outdated gameplay and lifeless cities, Pillars of Eternity's only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of combat mechanics, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Sawyer vetoed the idea of making anything at all innovative or original; he made sure the game would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody, just ridiculously profitable nostalgia pandering to ageing Baldur's Gate fans. Pillars of Eternity might be anti-casual(or not), but it’s certainly the anti-Divinity series in its refusal of spontaneity, fun and excitement.

The writing is dreadful; the narrative was terrible. As I played, I noticed that every time I engaged in dialogue with an NPC the game presented me with a Wiki-page style infodump instead of anything resembling actual human conversation.

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time this was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Sawyer's mind is so governed by obsession with pointless minutiae of the lore that he has no other style of writing.

Later I read a lavish, loving review of Pillars of Eternity by the same David Gaider. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kiddies are playing Obsidian games at 17 or 18, then when they get older they will go on to enjoy Dragon Age II." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you play "Pillars of Eternity" you are, in fact, trained to shill for Bioware.

Yeah, I have noticed getting money in this game is tough, kind of annoying. Like weapons and armor cost quite a bit compared to what the game gives you. I'm not sure if there is a way to earn money quickly aside from selling stuff you pick up throughout the game. There is no money perk or ability as far as I'm aware.

What also sucks is that there is faction rewards if you reach certain levels with them, so if you never get positive reputation with certain factions you'll never get their rewards. Some of the rewards are really nice like armor, weapons, etc.

Read it carefully, pretty sure the first two levels increase "materials" and only level three gives you the "loot" upgrade. There is a difference between loot in materials in this game.

It's more about picking what weapon type, and realistically your only options are single handed blades and maces, and two handed blades and maces, with the blades and blunts separated into two trees. You should then pair whichever you pick with the stasis magic tree, firearms, and the traps tree. The magic attack tree, divine ring, is absolute shit.

Much better than I expected, actually, as a character, but his romance is absolutely cringeworthy.

I saw this game and thought it looked interesting, I liked the premise that it offered, but after downloading it I was really underwhelmed at what it actually was.

>cannot use alchemy to see what's in his potions even though your character is an alchemist
>can't even look around his cart to see what ingredients are around even if you have intuition
>chase him down and question him, your "diplomat" instantly believes all explanations given, no questions asked
>can either arrest him, ignoring his accusations or just let him go, no way to actually give a fair trial or explore what was said.

It's just so fucking simplified and knee-jerk. If you're gonna present yourself as a diplomacy simulator, you should have an in-depth system. Not just force black or white options on the player's face when your character is supposed to be a high level aristocrat who's actions are subjected to scrutiny and has to balance several tense relationships.

Maybe I am just spoiled from D&D but fuck, none of this shit would be hard to implement, it just feels like the game is rushed as shit and shallow. Does anyone else feel like this or am I just being a complete faggot?

im having fun with it, chucking out grenades and blowing niggers to smithereens by the dozens is pretty satisfying. it sucks that crafting them is so expensive though. magic is pretty onions and i can tell why all the castersoys are bored if you're just backpedaling spamming the bolts all game.

Eh, I didn't really care to use him that much, but I haven't gotten all the party members yet. Once I do I'll have to try them all out to see which two I ultimately want to have in my party. Honestly Sinoa has a healing ability that is really nice, so she's like a pseudo healer. Vasco can put poison on his weapons but so can you, unless you just want a second gun user in your party.

Mage party members pretty much suck, but yes, Siora at least has healing and can use melee.

Can agree, I'm speccing into traps and guns with swordplay and it is really fun. Guns are nice for armor destroying and distance fighting. Traps also destroy armor but can also inflict poison and do AoE damage, plus destroy armor as well.

Why would you use the shitty pew pew magic that's in this game when you can fuck people up with elemental traps and then blast their faces off with rifles and pistols? Unless I'm out of the loop and you actually get cool magic that looks like it actually hurts later on.

The pew pew magic just gets faster and faster, until you get the perk that glitches your attack speed and lose all of that. I am rolling two handed sword, firearms/resins, and stasis. Timing parries and swiping with the two handed sword is much more fun than spamming M1. The divine magic ring's block cannot parry, only block.

Quests so far seem pretty braindead (go to this marker, go to this marker, listen to this dialogue, persuasion check/combat/bribe, +1000xp).
Exploration so far is meh with all those invisible walls and obvious paths. If there is something worth finding like a skill altar it will be marked on the map long before you actually see it.
Combat is okay but it's mostly braindead enemies outnumbering and bum rushing you. Beasts just keep lunging at you never dodging, Humans sometimes parry.

I love jank games but this here brings very little to the table.

Quests do have multiple ways to complete them though. For example you can completely sneak in and save your cousin and not fight the guards outside.

Also in the very same questline to find your cousin you can go to a bar via market and initiate multiple quests like fixing furniture so that owner can tell you about it or so people tell me.
What happened in my case was that I found a flyer that said that some people had captured some rich guy so I simply stumbled on that house and a cutscene played where Constantine was asking for help and I completely skipped the bar/pub questline and when you visit the bar with Constantine after the rescue he pays the guy himself.

I don't know if I'm liking it. The dialogue is pretty bad and not 'bad' like Elex or Gothic, they're actually bad. The outside scenery is pretty good looking, but as soon as it comes to interiors or city insides it looks awful. The animations are absolutely janky and awful. The skill/magic upgrades seem neglible and don't really feel powerful. It also doesn't seem open world'ish and is very constrained and it's also boring to play the white saviour of natives. The companion system is pretty good though and they actually kill more stuff than you in fights. The story could be good, but since I don't like most of the game it might be better to just watch a movie edit of it.

You don't get a ship. You set sail and make landfall all in one cutscene. The pirate aesthetic is a bit like Risen 2, but that's one faction of the game. It's a similar situation too, where you have to choose natives or civilization. Much better comparison there than either of those two games.

I did the arena fight on extreme and the hunter killed one of the beasts on his own. As long as you kill the gunner asap it's not a particularly difficult fight.

I just did this not even an hour ago and had no trouble. The enemy human was a skull, and the two beasts weren't. Beasts can be blocked, but not parried. If your balance isn't high enough you will fall to the ground when you block, but you're immune to damage when downed so whatever.

I was also on extreme and the hunter got immediately merc'd in one hit. What level were you?

I don't remember. It was hours ago. Whatever level you would normally be when doing the first line of quests in new serene.

Like most games made today, "extreme" just means "we bloated NPC damage and HP way the fuck up", so the Hunter NPC can kill one of the beasts with its overblown damage if he hits it before the beast hits him, in which case he dies immediately.

I'm getting fine FPS as long as I look straight ahead, but the moment I turn around it stutters to shit. I can't live with that.

The closest game I can compare it too would be Dragon Age Origins. But so far I'm a lot more invested in this than I was in DA origins

Had Kurt offer to help me with a requirement but I don't actually see a mechanism in game to allow for it.

Alright I have no idea why but I fixed it. If anyone else has the problem and looking for a fix I'll post what I did.
It was set to install to C:Games by default and crashed when I tried to change the install path.
I noticed that the iso was mounted as the F drive which is unusual. I unmounted and then mounted the iso again and it then was mounted as the E drive as usual.
For some reason that worked.
