He's a shell of a man with nothing but his mission. I find it incredibly hard to imagine him thinking romantically in any way and it would be much more fitting for him to be asexual. On the other hand if the gay reveal was for someone like Lucio, Hanzo, or Junkrat I think it would fit better. They're still characters who would have the sorts of feelings and motivations that would make that little trivia interesting, even if it never has any effect on the story.

Representation is a gnarly issue to tackle. Today, putting "diverse" characters in games sort of makes the game feel almost fraudulent to some. The reason why you'd include gay characters is either for variety or moral reasons, like providing gay people a powerful example of someone like themselves and normalizing their appearance in media. Both are valid approaches but they can come at some costs. But one of the unfortunate things about this is people are not very receptive to gay characters. And one of the reasons for this is the political atmosphere that we're in. If the addition of gay and other minority characters is heavily politicized then people will only naturally be less receptive. People don't want to be preached to. Its how gamers in general seem to never be receptive to black female characters but if they're Japanese then it's a lot easier. Shinobu from NMH comes to mind. The Japanese also care about representation in one way or the other but it's mostly about variety. You can get some interesting writing scenarios when you have a lot of different types of characters. I don't think there's anything wrong with going out of your way to make a diverse cast, just be chill about it or you just end up taking the audience out of the world.
