It just means designing a character that appeals to "not just men", like a character who does not have to try to dress/look like they were designed to sexually appeal to the male gaze. The problem is that these designers typically do a fucking 180 and design just the most unappealing character so as to avoid "being sexualized" by men, without accepting that there are women who are naturally attractive or can still dress attractively despite also having a well-written characterization that can appeal to "not men" or even just a good characterization that can just be liked by most everyone. It's hard to judge a character's design as being seen one way or another without knowing the personality of said character, and even then, since writing in video games is not typically very good

1's story was good, but gameplay? Come on, for fuck's sake. 1 had at least some nonlinear maps, a sense of exploration, unique and actually interesting puzzles on all maps, almost all maps had a unique mechanic to work with/against, a greater selection of weapons, MUCH, MUCH, SO FUCKING MUCH better controls and camera handling. Madness returns had better enemies and more dynamic combat, good music and nice graphics, but that's it. Literally the entire game consists of jumping from platform to steam vents and shooting red clocks till they are green, andplacing clockwork shit on pressure plates. The few puzzles we actually have take literally 0 IQ and are reused on multiple levels. Instead of interesting, unique mechanics we get shitty slides and 2d segments that are both easy, shit, and add nothing ot the game whatsoever. "Exploration" consists of spamming the aoverused shrink mechanic to find dime a dozen small rooms where you will find useless bottles or memories (which at least add to the story). In the first game, you actually had to use your wits to find out what to and how to do and the Cheshire cat wasn't much help either, he only hinted at it with cryptic messages. In MR, if by any chance you are retarded enough to get lost on a completely linear level, what to do is painted on the walls literally on every corener, and the Cheshire Cat has been demoted from an actually interesting and likable (if sassy and sometimes outright asshole) character to a built-in playthrough guide, that is, when he just doesn't say lines from the ending poem which at those places add nothing to the game.
All in all, the game was a shitty console port with all its drawbacks, made to cater to fucking causals, all sorts of creativity has been removed from gameplay. You played through the first 30 minutes, you've seen 90% of what the game has to offer for the remaining ~15 hours.

Looks good from one or two angles in certain lighting, looks like a potato made of play-doh (potaydoh) from any other angle and/or lighting.
