i stopped playing halfway through and ive been putting it off for a while because i feel like i forgot all the mechanics and itll be so much harder than it already is now

Not yet, unfortunately. I love the game, but it truly makes me feel dumb, and my current job/thesis situation is so taxing that I really don’t have the juice needed to focus on Baba’s puzzles. I guess that I could try skipping the worst blocker puzzles (I’ve spent so much time with some of the puzzles that I don’t think that I’m able to think outside the box any better no matter how hard I try), but that would feel dirty, very dirty.

I beat prison without a guide, so I can feel happy about that at least.

I did beat it. Could only do a handful of levels a day because of how exhausted my brain would get. Only had about 20 levels in the end that I had skipped, but don’t feel motivated to put myself through them.

On META stage, selecting the next level is a puzzle on its own...

it never hurts to come back to puzzles later since it might give you other ideas on how to solve certain levels.
some of the early/midgame levels are a lot harder than the later levels. Volcanic cavern in particular can go fuck itself , the fucking first few levels in that are harder than everything else in that section, plus the mountain section after that, and every other later level

The point is experimenting and learning how everything works, you have zero penalty for failure and there's even an undo button so you're never forced to redo a bunch of steps just to get back to a certain point if you fucked up
