was the late 90s the best period ever vidya wise?

yes

Attached: bt0nl5bwgll31.jpg (666x642, 72K)

Maybe.
Those games can still be played and enjoyed.

Le nostalgiabrain thread

maybe, but internet was not a thing and I prefer internet over videogames.

I want to go back in time.

Please come back my carefree teenage years... i want to undo some mistakes that makes my life now miserable.

It was a completely different world, really. The worthless shit we get today is just a product of our rapidly deteriorating and vapid society. Vidya as we know it might even disappear by 2030 and replaced by throwaway casual trash. Oh wait

Late 90s.
> Internet was not a thing..

We can't go back.

Imagine if arcades were subscription based rather than pay per playing. Would it survive?

80's-90's transitional period was the best time for vidya. I'm thinking like 87 to maybe 95. After that it got pretty bad.

>wonder where the fuck the PlayStation was
>it's sitting neatly on an organized shelf next to a n64
That's pretty based if I do say so myself.

I've been playing games since 1986. There are a few good games and a ton of bad ones in every gen. If you have a particular fondness for the late 90s, it's related to nostalgia or bias. I have nostalgia for the NES. But I can still recognize good games from the periods after that. My top ten games come from periods between 1986-2007.

The mid/late 90's were the Wild West days of the internet.

Everything else was so shit vidya could stand out

Now is the best period ever vidya wise because there is an unprecedented level of accessibility to video games of every era for cheap, plus unprecedented access to game-making technology that everyone can afford leading to all kinds of interesting and weird indie games.
Take the fucking nostalgia glasses off.

Do guys still decorate their rooms with posters of 3D women(obviously not counting weebs and anons with anime girls) like the stereotype teen boys did back then, as in this picture? Seems like a thing that wouldn't survive in modern SJW world.

If I only could go back in time and slap the shit out of my younger self.

continued

look at this. people paid over 50 dollars for absolute garbage in the "good ol' days"

So sick of this nostalgia-faggotry.

It's nice to be able to go back in time a little bit but I wish someone could make a VR game all about going to a retailer to try out the game kiosks, I miss going to places like Walmart, Circuit City and Media Play to try out game samples as a kid

>zoomer didn't experience renting games
$1-2 per week if you're a member was common back then especially if you live in a populated area. If you are friendlly with the people working there, you can even rent it longer especially if the game is not in demand.

A video store near me rented games. They closed on Sunday, so if you rented it on Saturday, you got to keep it until Monday. So based

It was all about LAN parties those days

They were the shit.

>not the shitposting one
a bit disappointed

This post did not age well.

lol. I can smell this post.

Epic

for actually getting excited for shit definitely. back then you could pick up pretty much any game from a major franchise and it would be good. hell some company lables like square and Rareware pretty much guaranteed they would be good.

Nowadays almost every major franchise produces mediocre safe shit.

EmuVR. It's basically use Retroarch to play games and watch TV in a VR space with an 80s/90s aethetic

I had a Vive and I think that would hurt my eyes or the "screendoor effect" would break immersion.

Help society get rid of identity politics and social media. Then we can go back to what it was like in the 90s. Or just ignore western media and play Japanese games/watch anime. They're keeping the old ways alive.

relax your vision brah

It was the time when games were getting more mainstream acceptance, so more money was coming in, so developers could do bigger and better things - but before they got so big that they were taken over by conglomerates run by MBAs who sell games like they sell deodorant soap.

That said, the best period of video is now. Because you can play everything that came out before now - and probably for free.

Lol if this is your life you only have yourself to blame.

I hear you dude. 10 years ago when I wanted to play some late 90s PC games nothing fucking ran on the newer machines. Now so many of the games have community patches and ran perfectly on 64bit Win 10. That's why I will always love PC the best

yeah no shit bro

That's what you took issue with? Smoking at any time, in any place is stupid.

this shitpost turns 20 in 3 days

here's an idea:
turn all the discs and cartridges into anime girls and all the consoles into fucking machines
why not?

Yes.

The 90s in general was the best period of my life, period

Attached: 1563836471745.jpg (720x720, 61K)

No they weren't

Hardware creep was a constant thing in the nineties and it got so crazy you had to basically switch your shit every year or you wouldn't be able to play new videogames. This got even worse when 3dfx exploded.

Second, by the time 1998 rolled around 80% of vidya being churned out was solely two genres: FPS and RTS. A steady free flowing stream of fucking cancer shit was flooding the markets, it got so bad I didn't even play Half Life because wow great, another FPS. All the best games were released in the first half of the nineties, by the end the industry was already turning to shit.

And one final thing, you couldn't even pirate the news stuff reliably in the late nineties because broadband internet was still in its infancy (It only popularized around 2001-2003 which is when real piracy started) and you had to literally buy pirated games on discs.

that post gave me depression

I certainly have great memories of it. Arcades were still around then in the States and were as advanced as they could possibly get. Best places to spend a Friday night.

>I wish someone could make a VR game all about going to a retailer to try out the game kiosks, I miss going to places like Walmart, Circuit City and Media Play

>identity politics was so small, only fringe losers at universities experienced it
>no social media
>media still had to appeal to the majority of the audience compared to the extreme vocal minority like today
>media actually had to create original ideas instead of just rehashing everything
>commerce had to innovate to survive
>shareholders weren't as powerful as they are now
>2D animation was at its highest point
>the internet was still small, so it hadn't been ruined yet
>racism was at its lowest point in history, we were close to true egalitarianism until the media brought it back
The 90s wasn't perfect. But it was far better than the last two decades.

There was internet back then, it just wasn't as terribly consolidated as now.

Attached: 150304_consumer-internet1.jpg (900x2002, 827K)

i hate this

And it will only get worse unless certain politicians get elected and break up the companies. The ones we have now are all bought by those handful of companies.

90% of everything is shit holds true. been underwhelmed the past two or three gens but there's still Dark Souls and likes to come along and surprise me.

comfy image but no backrest suck after a while of gaming

Not sure what that reaction is trying to convey

Those bed sheets are giving me school binder flashbacks.

>internet was not a thing
>post usenet

6th gen was better.

Usenet was still internet retard. The absolute state of Yea Forums in 2019.

Remember blast corps?

Usenet was way more early/mid 90s internet thing, by the late 90s or even upper mid-90s the internet was fairly commonplace and functionally the same as today except way slower with no good streaming video or social media outside chatrooms/forums also much-much more decentralized, but in the late 90s my family was ordering off eBay/Amazon and using Google just like today it was way farther along by that time than you guys are thinking.

It was certainly a different time compared to today

The upgraded internet was a mistake

all i get from this is that nothing has changed. what a shitty time to be alive
