It's a fashion statement.

There's no reason in this day and age to spend more than $350 on a phone. Midrange handsets are equivalent to the flagship models of two-years-ago. You can now buy phones with 128GB internal storage, massive screens, huge batteries etc. for relatively cheap prices. Insurance is inherently cheaper too if you're worried about breaking it.

Yeah having vanilla software is definitely a plus. I definitely recommend the "Power" variants, they last for days and actually aren't heavy despite packing 5000mah or more. Oh and they have actual headphone jacks.
