How subversive!” and “my favorite lets players, the game grumps, talked about this game a lot so I’m going to try it out!”/“Dating sims are normally for icky cishet men, but this one is all gay dudes, and one’s even a transsexual! I’ll play it because it is very progressive, like myself.” And then they praised them to the high heavens and acted like they broke new ground, because they’re not actually fans of the genre and don’t know that “it was spooky all along!” or “gay boy dating sims” are a dime a dozen

Putting aside that you're actually stupid enough to think that DDLC's art is actually better than Fate's, most visual novels are also better looking than that, since most visual novels need to sell on their art and don't have Ryukishi07's reputation to precede them.

I feel like it works in the game's favor, since the entire premise doesn't seem to be to scare you but unsettle you. So the game starting up by saying "it's gonna be fucked up" makes it so you're off center before it even starts. Of course then the game shits the bed after Satori necks herself so, whatever.
