You weren't supposed to complete ALL fetch quests. As soon as you get enough power you need to move on to next story mission.

Morrowind for example. Caius Cosades won't give you another quest until you're certain level. Or guilds won't progress you in rank until you do certain amount of fetch quests and your skills will be at certain level for them to accept you and promote you.

I don't recall Caius Cosades telling you that you can't progress anything in the game until you grind out 10000 bumfuck points from poor helpless people.

Morrowind is an incredibly open world. 90% of people will be overleveled by the time they reach Caius Cosades anyway. This is not the case with DA:I, you literally cannot get the points they ask you for before you get the quest to grind out a ridiculous amount of them.

I hated that I had to hold a button so that my character would auto-attack. Either make it an action RPG or tactical RPG, don't go halfway and end up with something absolutely retarded.

Even worse that on PC game requires Xbox controller and if you use anything else it completely messes up controls. Meanwhile, because of the aforementioned necessity to hold a button to auto-attack, playing keyboard+mouse is a pain in the butt.

I did everything in the game and ended up with about as many Influence points as I had spent. I should also note that I spent more Influence points than I needed to complete the main story, as at least one of the open-world areas is entirely optional (Hissing Wastes, not sure about others).
The areas are prettier and more varied than Skyrim, makes for a perfect game to explore while stoned so the fetch quests and sidefuckery were a welcome treat for me.

DA2 was such a turnoff for me I played it for 5 minutes and did not touch the series since.

It has nothing to do with Andromeda. Unadulterated offline MMO with console-dumb combat system, mediocre role-playing and laughable tactical options, plus some glaring technical issues. If it weren't for the Dragon Age logo and the lore / references all over the place, nobody would care about it.

In the light of Origins, DAII was also a huge let-down that I actively dodged for 4 years. When I finally played it (ironically, because of DA:I), it surprised me how fun it was - and ARPGs are not my cup of tea. With DA:I? I still have the PTSD that the combat system (+offline MMO features) gave me.

I'm thinking of giving DA2 a try, maybe fast forward it with some mods or cheats.
How was it a letdown for you?
I remember these horrible ninja/naruto animations playing mage for a little bit, and how it made me sick. Also as far as I could tell from my buddy's playing - they reuse same locations over and over.

Witcher 3's side quests are interesting, some more than the main story to the point where you forget why you came there to begin with. DA:I has almost none of this because they didn't have the time after ages of development hell. Its side quests rarely have any depth to them. Some do and they are fine but its not nearly enough to make even half of these giant maps interesting to travel across

I just had a lore epiphany as I was eating dinner while skimming over the lore 10 minutes ago:

The Old Gods, the darspawn draconic beings that slumer underground and lead blights, are bioweapons send to the material world by the banished elven god-mages.
Think about it; they had the power to transform into dragons and compartmentalise their essense as we've seen Flemeth/Mythal do. And that ability is inheritable/transferable via some means like the Well of Sorrows for example. It's safe to assume after Solas dicked all the elven god-mages in their Fade concentration camp and erected the Veil, they were as assblasted as it gets. To fuck with the world in their douchebagery, they must've found a way to WiFi a part of their essense with the dragon form and gave it the Blight "bioweapon" turning them into self-sustainable Darkspawn motherships.

To what end? Well that'd take all day to discuss.

This game was the final straw for me from BioWare. Mass Effect 2 was so bad, so dogshit, that I didn’t even pirate ME3. But I was suckered into getting this travesty thanks to you fucks on Yea Forums saying that it was better than DA2, and that it was almost as good as Dragon Age Origins. This game isn’t even 1% as good as DAO, and that’s being absurdly generous. This tab target I combat time sink short campaign laughable story garbage made me so pissed I wanted to kill myself out of frustration. This is one of the worst games of the last 20 years only being better by a hairs breadth than Mass Effect 2. Anyone who even says this game is mediocre is a paid shill and should be shot out back.

Oh so you aren’t supposed to play the game only do chores until the hell finally ends and you are released to play a better game from a completely different studio, thank you paid shill for your garbage opinion.

BW turned it into a linear, fast-paced hack&slash (with some JRPG flavour), where both roleplaying and lore building took a backseat. It's definitely dumbed-down compared to Origins, if you played the latter just watch a DA2 video and you can tell the difference in style and depth.

However, it's quite enjoyable once you accept for what it is. The Naruto animations and the reused assets are indeed there, but playing a Sarcastic (console-like dialogue system, don't ask) DW Rogue was pretty fun. Everything is rather simplistic by design but necessarily irritating.

I'd say give it an honest shot, knowing in advance what to expect. Even if you don't play such games otherwise - I still don't regret my completionist run. My best memories consist banters from Hawke, some heartfelt interactions with companions, certain antagonist(s) and the DLCs.

This game felt good untill i left the Hinterlands. They picked ALL of their ideas for the gameplay and throw it into the first area, and it felt good, because it had some variety.
But then you get into the second area, and notice: "Holy shit, it's exactly the same flower picking, the same rift closing, the same mineral collecting, the same templar/demon/mage group of enemies to kill"
And the same goes for the third area.
And the fourth.
And the fifth.
And all of that shit is MANDATORY to progress. You need to close 5 rifts. Pick more stones. Kill more groups of demons/mages/templars, or you can't go on with the plot.
The more you go on, the more spongie enemies become. Everything loot related is shit, you get one weapon that makes your damage go from 230 to 231 every 5 hours.
The real time missions are stupid as fuck. Want to unlock this area? 2 inquisition points, come back in 24 hours. Need resources? 3 hours wait, have 2 out of 350 rocks.
Don't get me started on how awful are characters. I hated almost any character except for the gay mage and the templar tomboy, all the rest can fuck themseves for how dumb and shit they are written. Fuck the knife eared whore, i wish there was an option to neck her after she killed a fucker i was talking to.

Don't get me started on how bad this game looks: animation, textures, physics, it's all garbage compared games 5 years older.

Zone design clearly took a note from MMOs, and the world manages to feel very empty as a result. I didn't much like the writing, and a lot of the characters fell flat for me. Multiplayer was actually okay, though.

The idea of running an Inquisition should have been the bread and butter of the game but it's not that well implemented desu, as it stands it's your standard walk for miles and kill some dudes, but there isn't a strong plot to carry that.

DA2 is pretty good to be honest, just don't replay it. The repetitive areas make sense, you are confined to a town and its surroundings so bandits and mages keep hiding out in the same holes (or different passages in the same big cave). Combat was fun, flashy but in a good way.

'Cause they don't decide who becomes a romance option and what their sexuality until late in the writing process, except for cases like Dorian since he was Gaider's swan song. Leliana was never going to be an option and Harding existed to just gauge fan reaction to a dwarf romance. So that left Vivienne, Sera, Cass and Josie. Vivienne's character is heavily written around the man she loves, so she's out. They decide to make Sera a lesbian, so then that leaves Cass and Josie. The real problem is that there weren't enough female characters. Tbh I would've had Varric and Harding switch places, have him work as some sort of connections agent and make Harding a companion.

It was given too much credit on launch, not too little. The game is super scuffed.

It's the shell of a MMORPG in the frostbite engine, with the multiplayer stripped out. By definition, it's a garbage game.

The sound design was fucky, NPCs you are talking too were too quiet or too loud, ambiance and sound effects had fucky effects if you had nearby objects.

Classes were stripped down going into DA2, and stripped down again in Inq. Mage can't use some of its most iconic spells from the first game. The lack of deep specialization options hurts the game too.

Gameplay is stale boring MMO rotations because too many spells JUST do damage or damage+CC. Very few utility spells, very few ways to creatively use your class kits to solve encounters via buffs, debuffs, or any other way other than raw damage. The combos are pretty okay, I like the Templar Bomb a lot, but they're the exception, not the rule.

The main quest felt like it had to high of stakes before the player is even invested. You dont have a chance to orient yourself before you're told you're fucking Jesus and it's your job to unfuck the entire world. You contrast between fucking around doing MMO quests, collecting bear asses for dumbasses, and high stakes story missions with some reactivity. If you don't do enough MMO grinding, you can't progress the main quest, and the MMO grinding has fucking NOTHING to do with the main quest, so the story is frequently getting blocked by 2-3 hours of grinding shitty quests for power.

The world design is okay, but the content in the zones is shit. I liked the exploration, but that's about it. The quests in the zones were almost univerally shit. The main quests for the zones are the only engaging parts of them.

You can have other roles besides tank, DPS, healer and have it work. There are games that aren't about fighting where you might have different natural roles. A heist game might have a hacker, a safebreaker, a stealth guy, a takedown expert, a lookout/driver, and so forth. There are games that are about fighting where a trinity doesn't make sense, like world of warships. A game with fighting may have out of combat obstacles that are highly important and require trap disarming skills, social skills, scholarly knowledge, stealth, scouting, and so forth. Even in a game where it is all about fighting and it can fit the trinity you can have other roles like many variations on DPS types, crowd control, hybrids, energy restoration, and buffing buffing. A game can also just not have roles so everyone is doing damage, healing, and trying to not die, which can be more exciting for some (maybe some classes will be tankier and some will be able to heal others, but it's not baked into the game as automatically required or optimal).

I suppose if a game has less roles, or no different roles an effort has to be made to avoid the characters being samey or one option being far superior. When there are more roles than tank/heal/damage that are pretty much required the more difficult it might be to make a functional or optimal team. The trinity is far easier to pull off, that's for sure.

I really dislike how much time I wasted in playing a lot of Bioware Games. I'm really glad I never wasted a ton of money on their dlc either, except maybe buying one expansion for ME 3. I watched the expansions for Dragon Age Inquisition and they really seemed like sequel bait. I have hated on Inquisition almost since its release. I've been invested in Dragon Age ever since Origins got released. My problem came from high expectations. Inquisition was a god damn mess. If you look at interviews, they were trying so hard to chase the Skyrim money that they forgot what made a Bioware game a Bioware game. The leads took a team that was used to making linear areas peppered with well designed encounters and said "make sandboxes". Well, guess what, the sandboxes look pretty, but most of them are devoid of meaningful content. The one that does have a boatload of content, the Hinterlands, is the one almost everyone hates, because all of the work they could manage to put in is a bunch of busy work with all of the meaningful bits hidden in a bunch of text boxes. At least in the old games, Gaider's self-congratulatory writing was delivered in a presentable way. Then you get shit like the Orlesian civil war being introduced and immediately being solved (unless you read a book), 75% of the areas being shit, and Corypheus's entire army being undermined after three missions.

Bioware has admitted they were literally in charge of the majority of their own decisions, including calling Dragon Age II, Dragon Age II and not giving it a subtitle like all of the other games in the series, because they wanted to hit those sales targets. And the production times, too. ME3 was grunted out in a year because it would've been the final game in the contract. It's also been confirmed again and again and again that the majority of EA studio heads literally don't give a fuck about quality of games and just want to make more money as possible because as studio heads, they get a bonus.

I genuinely liked how Cullen and Solas would only romance specific race, or how Sera’s romance had different responses and difficulty based on your race.
It’s a small subtle form of racism that really adds some realism to their characters, it’s nice.
