7 had legit great ideas but suffered from dullness in regard to the backgrounds (the cliff and snow ones were great tho). Also, it was on DS, so limitations. XX didn't really fix anything aside from addings a few alternate paths (and the absurdly broken Leona as DLC).

they're dotemu ports, which means they're not proper ports, they're the phone versions run through a shitty emulator. You'll get a better experience just going through MAME or if you really dislike mame for some reason the PSP/wii ports of the anthology. I think the ps2 version still has some bugs.

the online is also dead on all of them so don't buy it thinking "well at least i'll have the ability to play online" cause you better be buying two copies.

Flame shot is ass in MS1 but it really packs a punch in the later games.
It doesnt do as much damage per shot as the shotgun but it has a faster dps and slightly more range

Metal slug was fun, but there hasnt been a good game in 19 years.

Make killing things feel good. Balance your weapons around usability. Make sure that your sound effects pack a punch and are not repetitive. Don't make your character walk too slow or too fast. Don't make it too plot/dialogue heavy.

I was actually thinking about trying to make a simplistic 3d model of Fio and trying to capture the essence of the sprite for a challenge

Fuck anyone who compared it to Contra and Metal Slug, it is shallow as fuck with garbage music and Lilo plays like a crappy Oddworld

You're not going to match the atmosphere and sprite detail of MS, and probably not the enemy/boss design either. Which means you need to compensate elsewhere, like with a better combat system (MS feels great but it's all down to very good art and sound, not because the combat system is great).

That reminds me, the bonus mode where you played as a Morden soldier in MS3 was fucking kino.
