Just a heads up for people not having fun, turn the game to an easier difficulty and do the hard difficulty on your next playthrough. This game is a lot like DMC4 in the since that your first playthrough you should just rush through it to get the upgrades because the combat is a hundred more times enjoyable once you actually get access to it. Don’t bother with the side shit till your next playthrough, focus on just getting what you need to upgrade your baton, legions, and this games version of a DT.

Getting hit while doing perfect call can happen pretty easily if you're trying to rely on it, especially against multiple enemies

yeah, the game didn't really work for me. The plot doesn't go anywhere and gives almost no answers, astral plane was ugly as sin and repetitive, lock on was pure garbage, camera can be a massive pain too.

I feel like the silent protag hindered a lot of scenes that could have been really heartfelt if the PC had a voice. It probably could have given more answers and better explanation to events and characters if there was a bit more interjection.
Overall, without spoiling anything, I felt it was emotionally satisfying and served it's purpose, but it was rather barebones and could have had more scenes.
I really like the game but those goddamn corner chain jumps over bottomless pits coupled with the camera and weird as shit collision detection are really fucking annoying. Also why, when changing legion colors, can I only change one at a time? I have to go back into edit mode to change the other two colors.

The story was serviceable to drive along the game, but ultimately pretty generic and forgettable. It reminds me a lot of Vanquish, where the story is just a device to drive along the gameplay.

Having them talk in the epilogue was just a cheap trick to make what they had to say more impactful than it really was. They wanted you to be so floored that they were talking that you would find anything they had to say profound. The silent protagonist thing was just so fucking stupid and really the only major complaint I have with the story/writing. Like, none of it is anything amazing at its core but I still appreciate the cheesiness of it well enough and does otherwise tell a decent and complete enough story. It just could have been done better if they have the player character something to actually say and have more input to what is going on.
The part in the sewers? Yeah, you can't control the camera since you're controlling the fucking dog and it's a massive pain in the ass every time you have to turn.

You can perfect dodge the first hit, but unless you were right on the edge, you'll be caught by the following hits right away, and your sync moves out of dodge aren't invincible as far as I can tell. Are you just supposed to see that the attack is coming way ahead of time and run or chain jump away?

Game is good but flaws keep it from becoming great. Several things have great polish, like so many options in combat + the longer you play the more new combat mechanics you find...then you see problems that stop the not being invincible during cutscene-like sync attacks or combat is graded by there's no style-meter to know how you're doing.
It feels like the game was biting off more than it could chew, aiming for the sky but not hitting home runs. It's combat is probably the best part of the game, is above average and good, but it is a step down from other titles like Bayonetta/DMC/Ninja Gaiden to truly stand out.
I love the game, but I can see how some people could be put off by it. I still recommend it, give it an 8.5 out of 10. Backgrounds are damn gorgeous too.

This. Many are pretending the game has way more flaws than it actually does when the only problem is that they dont experiment at all in a combat system with a fuckton more options than they use.
I admit some sync attacks can be considered a flaw when you dont have any other option instead of perfect calling, however sync attacks are supposed to be situational and you need to know when to use them and when to not use them, you're not supposed to spam them and you need to know the animations of the sync attacks of your legion, else you'll also complain just like OP that it doesnt have tracking when it shouldnt. Style meter is just a nitpick, just read the list when the grade appears.

It's so satisfying to bind an enemy, sync attack with Arms, watch the enemy get fucking launched halfway across the map by the final rocket punch and then zandatsu while it's in midair.

No. Combat is too weird. Just launching an enemy is weird. I don't know how to reliably stagger an enemy beisdes chain binds, to then be able to go to town on them for stylish combos.
The game feels a little bit like ninja gaiden to me, where it's not really about combos but more about surviving the hordes of enemies thrown at you.
Unless something is found that really breaks the combat system, probably not. The game has really simple inputs and the whole challenge that fags like OP don't understand is understanding when to do them and where, since doing your big chain sync attack combo is segmented into parts and doing every part of it willy-nilly gets you hit. But that means that there isn't that much room to flex mechanical skill. On top of that, it's not really straightforward to actually combo enemies since you can't interrupt their attacks. Just hitting them is not enough, they can always start an attack with super armor, so the game is more about CC chain combos.
You'd need to find some tech that reliably keeps the enemies from doing stuff and probably something that opens up the air combo game a little bit more, like some kind of relaunch rotation or some cancel.
Granted if it's Yea Forumsstyle anything goes, people submit all kinds of crazy games. I remember seeing NG3RE once which is another game that doesn't really let you do continuous combos short of this really janky looking infinite shuriken juggle tech.

The original trailer had dialogue for both twins playing at once for instance and the OP uses footage of both routes. About as close as it gets is the inside cover featuring Raven chick and menu assets showing off moves using the male choice, but that's just simple asset reuse stuff. I think it'd be interesting if they decided to go with the female choice as canon, assuming they need to pick for a sequel. Can't think of an example of a game with a choice where they didn't pick the male path as default.

Platinum Games has always been a bit about having the players learn a lot of things by themselves, while discovering it through gameplay. Its not necessarily a bad things but sometimes it gets a bit extreme with essential mechanics like dodge offset in Bayonetta, which is strangely hidden even though it should have been shoved in your face at the start, its the main mechanic that makes the game so fun.

The game just has a few ways to S+ save for a few cases. Time is usually a good chunk of points in fights. If you're taking to long but do a lot of different moves you can make up for it. Not getting hit at all and doing a lot of moves will also make time irrelevant.

It's one of the best ways to rack up damage. I personally use beast, howl to stun, and then do the stuff i mentioned. Arms and Arrow are also good with Hit Rush.

If you were fighting only 1 enemy I dont believe you. Getting hit by the slam but perfect calling a stray bullet or some other enemy is more likely. Perfect call wont even activate against an attack if you call on the same frame as getting hit by that enemy.

I made that webm because this same retard was complaining about the sync missing sometimes. Enemies don't dodge every attack but they will dodge some because the game is not a juggle simulator like DMC. Enemies will stay in hitstun longer if you attack their backs though, allowing for longer combos. Some attacks gain more extreme knockback when used against an enemy's back too, which is what might have happened to this guy complaining about the perfect call blowing enemy away.

The second sync prompt was probably made a split second faster than the first one, which only shows that the enemies likely have much better AI than your typical action game and don't let you juggle them all the time if they get any chance to dodge. This isn't unreliable at all, you just need to take into account the legion you have and every animation for each single sync attack. Different animations have different i-frames making some safer than others, but this is something that you can know making it reliable. You can see enemy attacks like that coming from a mile away and you can also literally stop time while changing legions, so it should never be a problem if you know your stuff.
If it was something that happened sometimes and other times didnt, outside of player control, then THAT would be unreliable.

The arm call sync is a launcher that knocks up and spins in place. Not some homing attack. Pressing a sync attack doesnt mean free damage for swinging your weapon, you have to be aware of positioning and aiming to actually connect your hits. Arrow and Beast happen to have plenty of shooting attacks that do track the enemy.

And for a game like Astral Chain where the hitstop is tremendous and the timing is about as viable as any other PG, it really isn't that bad. It's not like the execution requirements here are particularly terrible, they're the lowest an action game could ask of you seriously.
I do, not only because of the combo potential, but because of all the other tools like jc, djc, the wire pod power, etc. Movement and combos are better, but I think AC handles difficulty better, because Automata's Very Hard difficulty is a meme. And the game should have rebalanced the pod's shooting power so locking on isn't an exclusive Normal mode thing.

That's kind of my problem with Automata's combat though. Recontextualizing an action game's core combat (or in other words, using tech that significantly pushes a "meta") and the core combat itself are two different things. Even with all the tech Automata has by comparison, the combat doesn't exactly become any more interesting for it, because Automata's core combat wasn't meant to be promisingly deep in any way. You can reach the skill ceiling in like a week or two tops not knowing shit, if you really try.
The tech is all more like slightly extra options rather than something that changes the game in a huge way. The most interesting thing Automata has is Kara Canceling and even that doesn't add much.
The thing about Astral Chain is that I don't think it's necessarily a better game in terms of depth either. But I do think there is a lot to merit about the core combat in other ways. There's a lot more thought put into the ebb and flow of how action and option-variety complement one another. The game very clearly wants you to play around with your Legion and your strategic possibilities. And it totally gives you way more than enough legroom to try (even if encouragement isn't the best.) There's tons of replay value in this aspect of AC. Automata's combat merits lie in being a different kind of action game, but doesn't care to be too much of that kind of action game much at all.

Explain how it's a bad thing though. He's complaining about something stupid. Performing any attack shouldn't make you fly across the arena to make all your hits land 100% of the time. That's not how action games work, and would remove more elements of skill. The game is quite lenient with guns and Arrow legion so you don't have to aim them, but melee attacks do need to be in range to connect.
It's on Nintendo's twitter, not maintaining your legions makes them slower and less aggressive.

The ranges of most attacks make sense though. For sword the only sync that misses sometimes is the chain bind sync if they were binded too far away for the lunge to reach. Sometimes beasts shot follow up to somersault on a stunned enemy can miss because of their launch height or fall speed. Don't know of any other problems that are not caused by reaching certain stagger/stun thresholds or the enemy dodging.
You've been exaggerating the problem and use hyperbole too. The thread where that air dodge webm was posted you (or who ever started this claim) even said that the dodge wasn't your problem but the enemy getting knocked back was. Enemies have hidden stun/stagger build up that affects how much each hit affects them. If the perfect call slam happened to blow them away (I haven't seen this happen myself) obviously doing the sync will whiff and isnt the optimal choice. You are not forced to use that sync because you performed the perfect defensive maneuver, it is just one possible attack. The defensive option still launches them opening them up for other attacks. You could even wait till the face plant on the ground and dona different combo while they get up if you wanted to. This is part of why auto-sync is bad, syncs aren't the only way to combo when other attacks are available.
That arm sync isnt even bad, it generally connects if the enemy doesnt dodge and it still hits other enemies around you too.
Maybe they can spawn in the post game cases.

From what I've gathered, it seems to be based on whichever point in the animation is considered startup, active, and recovery, on weapon type. It seems to go like:
>Gun: Cancel whenever, aside from the charged blasts which work like the normal Baton, listed below
>Baton: Startup can be canceled, active can't if hitting, recovery can but late
>Gladius: Startup and active frames of a move can't be dodge canceled if directly engaging with an enemy, recovery can
This is how it feels so far but I did think it had something to do with startup-active-recovery-weapon. It could be entirely wrong but it's worth looking into.
Do people actually use the MGR style L slash to counter moves? I find it horrible to aim, I just can't do it. Hell, It's a pain to use during the puzzles phase even.

You can't. I'm still on normal and get hit for 1800 or straight up oneshot on some of these cases
It's not that hard to use. Click right stick to slow time, left stick spins slash angle, right stick aims camera direction. If an enemy has more than one energy line on their attack you dont need to cut them all at same time. Just cutting one will stagger them out of the attack and you still get time to do a second slash to cut another line and inflict the stun. The dodge in Slash mode is really good too if you slow time, and perfect dodging with it has a unique ZR combo.

They have trouble dealing with monstrocities that Red could take down like a regular morning exercise. Noah is a bit of an outlier but far below anything the Wonderful Ones are capable of handling. If you put Raiden in the vs Noah scenario, it's extremely likely he'd come out survive, but not without a tough fight first.

Also sword, arrow, and axe perfect calls syncs are focused more on countering 1 enemy, while arm and beast perfect calls hit a wider area. Beast dodge sync is mainly for 1 target, etc.

They got more powerful and confident in their combat abilities as their number of Legions grew, and the fact that they were Pandemic children played a major role in them being stronger than their peers.
I feel like the power scaling is implied to jump up significantly after the sewer scene, where you (and I guess Akira) learn to control the fusion form and that probably also boosts their sync rate even higher as a result.
The power jumps aren't as clear cut but they're there in subtext.

Stand parallel to a line facing away from the others, use a vertical slash to cut it. The last color that has to be cut is very close to another one.

There's an ability named call lock or something that makes it way more viable. It makes legions not drain stamina during the first ~1.5 seconds after you call them. So you can summon sword, activate slow motion, and slash without using stamina.

I just got the game, is it something I'm doing wrong or is the sword's cutting ability really finicky? I was fighting the arrow legion and when he threw up those cuttable walls it would register the sword strikes. Not just that it didn't cut all of them, but that half the time it didn't even highlight when I had the line over it. I figured maybe they couldn't be cut if the boss wasn't near it, but I ended up just skipping the walls by legion jumping around them in the end anyways.
But more annoying was when I was fighting those tiny flying enemies that make another enemy invincible. I figured out that you're supposed to cut the line between them, which worked for the first few sets, but then the gorilla enemy came and the cutting didn't work. I hit the line at every angle and nothing was working. I tried chaining him and the flying enemy and it still didn't work. After like twenty minutes I got so annoyed that I turned on journalist mode to see what I was missing, and then it managed to cut the line just fine despite it never working when I did it even though I did it fine for the previous enemies. What the hell was I doing wrong?

That makes sense for the gorilla enemy since I couldn't get close to it without it beating me senseless or turning around quickly to hide the tiny enemy behind its body.
As for the walls in the archer legion fight though, I swear I standing right next to them at times and still no reaction. Maybe there was a sweet spot of not being too close or too far away that I was missing, but even if it worked, legion jumping was still faster to get around them.

Forgot to mention that most enemies have energy signals flowing through them while they're attacking. You can use Focus and easily cut them, and if you do they'll be stunned and you'll have the opportunity to do a pretty strong sync attack.

Point-based scoring, not demerit-based scoring. Although you also get points for finishing fights and cases with no damage. You'll hit a wall like some anons did when doing the actually hard content later though.
