Yes I agree that the E3 trailer was cringey and that the main character is ugly as fuck. However the game looks pretty damn fun coming from a longtime gears fan. It's just odd that I havent seen any valid criticism yet. I dont care if you think the game is shitty, I want to know WHY the game is shitty.

Even from the outside looking in you could see the decline in quality starting almost immediately. I'm not a huge fan but I liked the first one and that's about it. Any others I played were mediocre to terrible and this one looks like the worst yet.

The story it's just a weak retelling of Gears 2 but without the Lambent, meaning the Locust are back for no reason and they don't even have a motivation now. There even is a new Myrrah.
The gameplay is literally more of the same with a tacked on open world in a couple of chapters that adds nothing. The skiff sections are just an empty map where you travel between enemy encounters. The "side quests" are just "go there kill everyone- loot".
The characters keep being incredibly balnd except for Kait who is now geniuinely unlikable. There is a couple of fanservice moments with Cole and Carmine that are completely unearned.
The game is just as mediocre as Gears of War 4.
It's not really that open world, just two open ended levels that work well for the most part.

They tried the God of War route without actually putting in any real work. It's the same game you've been playing since 2006 but with prettier graphics and a story that I can't remove itself from its predecessors even though gears is unironically ripe with opportunity as far as its bizarre fucked up world is. Sera is a hellhole of a planet with flesh eating bat swarms, RAZOR HAIL, and all sorts of weird shit like more than one moon and freaky underground shit in a mostly destroyed society where humanity is on its knees and may not be able to recover, literally ever. Gears was depressing as all fuck when you read about its backstory. There didn't need to be a new action girl who is also the queen somehow.
Only issues so far I've heard from players is the server issue and the cosmetics retarded pricing (though its admittedly better than rng loot box shit). Beyond that, it seems to loved overall.

The game has a ton of bugs. The server issues are driving the players up the god damn wall and after WoW classic server issues, I'm really gonna guess there is an overlap because people REALLY don't have it in them for dealing with it. There's this odd new implementation of microtransactions too as well as 1 or 3 questionable game design moves like looking characters to classes in horde for example.

I was never a fan of the locust, and to my eyes the designs are fairly interchangeable. Story wise I think it was a pretty good way to go and Gears 5 really helped to make them more formidable.

Whoever approved the idea of locking characters to specific "classes" in Horde needs to be shot in the dick. Seriously, what a truly and unbelievably terrible idea. I though grinding for cards in Gear 4 was bad, but this is a whole new level of terrible.
The excuse as to why there's no characters for online right now is because they need to make them have cool classes/abilities for the meme gamemodes like horde and escape. Even though no one cares about those modes and just wants them in the normal multiplayer.

Combine all these together and you get a decent middle of the road game that isn't too offensive to anyone who isn't actively trying to create drama for the sake of creating drama.

I do, but that's because I just re-read the comics. They really should have just stuck to JD and Kait. They work as a better Marcus and Dom like paring than JD/Kait and Del. Kait's whole story feels like it would work better in the same way as Dom's story with his wife. Big part of the character and we see it unfold in the games but not AS the main character.
Jace is also really generic but he was more of a cameo character for a guy who shilled for Gears.

it's not really that much of a character inversion for Kratos if you payed attention to him in 1, though i'll agree 2 and 3 just flanderized him into the universes biggest asshole (so much so they retroactively blamed Pandora's box for it)
God of War made up for it by being a more narrative heavy game (and thus able to draw in the artsy fartsys), and being more casual friendly (an RPG brawler). Yes, on higher difficulties or for the Muspelheim challenges you needed to be on your ball, but over all it's easier for a more casual audience than a shooter is especially trying to play a shooter on fucking console sticks.
Plus - i'm just going to come out and say it - God of War was a mostly good game. From the sounds of it, Gears is just stale, buggy, and unpolished

It's a new game in the franchise, and it's good enough. They made a good enough game. And that's not a compliment or an insult, that's what it is. They took the thing that gears all ways did well (cover based 3rd person shooter) and they didn't fuck it up. Every thing else is just not impressive. NOT TERRIBLE...but not really great, not new not shiny, not innovative, not beautiful, nothing. It all just gets you through the game.
And on a side note I'm curious if anyone else has noticed that in the campaign Kait and her attitude or basically the cause of the problem for the new game? It was her refusal to get help and follow orders that is the direct cause of the Locust getting a new queen.

I have to admit I think I'd rather the components be like modifications to the weapons instead of shit for Jack. Like better stocks and sights, larger magazines, instead of getting 3 different Lancers, you just get to pick your attachment. I think that would be better. Maybe armor upgrades too. More ammo, more health, instant reload at the cost of no buffed ammo, extra grenade slots etc.

And that bugs me, like from a narrative standpoint, how does a writer or group of writers not see this as a problem. I or we are going to change the focus of the game onto a new character and then have her cause the problem, awaken the villain that kills her best friend among other things. And to top it off, we're not going to address that in the story at all.
This could have easily been written in a way that minimized her responsibility for it or they could have pushed through and made an even more emotional story by embracing it and having it really affect her and her relationship with everyone else. But they just really wash over it and then ignore it in favor of what was in my opinion high school drama. All this dialogue and story dedicated to JD who killed some people months or years ago because they were throwing "incendiaries" at soldiers and Kait essentially kickstarts the events that cause the destruction of an entire city, but lets not talk about that...sssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Beat it over the weekend and enjoyed myself alright. Checked out of Gears after G3 but the misleading trailers had me thinking we could actually have different endings or play as the new Locust queen and have an entirely different campaign perspective.
We get a captain america winter soldier type scene that reveals what we arleady knew about Kait going into the game. We also get to choose one of two people to kill but after reloading I can confirm both endings are the same F*cking thing.
But as a game its ok and was only dropped twice by Xbox. Game pass really does pay for itself with stuff like this.
If I dropped 60+ dollars on this then I wouldn't be so kind and would feel cheated by the marketing.

So here’s my quick list of everything wrong with the game.
Ridiculously grindy ToD and iron system.
Incredibly overpriced store that borrows the frustrating timed specials model.
Game as a whole is incredibly buggy. Every mode constantly crashes and the game is riddled with glitches. It’s impossible to play a single game in any mode without experiencing some sort of game breaking glitch.
The starting character line up is incredibly barebones and quiet frankly pathetic.
Customisation options are both excessive and pointless. What’s the point of having both a flag and a banner? Why have them at all when you only see them when somebody gets mvp? Who the heck gives a ■■■■ about bloodstains?
The game only has 7 starting maps.
The game advertises itself as a 3 player campaign, when it’s really 2.5 and some poor soul is forced to play as a ■■■■■■ robot.
People (myself included) were given the option to pay extra to get the game early and to receive halo reach skins. Many haven’t received the skins and given the buggy state of the game it’s basically impossible to play the game early. Will we get any sort of compensation for this? Probably not. Maybe a ■■■■■■ free skin or two, but otherwise nothing.
Every game mode is tied to ■■■■■■■ servers. It’s impossible to play any game mode without having access to the internet and you better hope to god that TC’s servers are running smoothly. Also it’s great knowing that in a couple years, when TC finally pulls the plug on the game servers, gears 5 will basically be impossible to play.
The gore is still being toned down like in gears 4. Where are the blood, bones and guts?

The game is trying too hard to be family friendly. It’s also catering to casuals. As a result we have that annoying elimination system which doesn’t accurately showcase your performance. Machine guns have no recoil and aim assist is through the roof.
The class based horde mode is unnecessary and excessive. Why would you tie the classes down to specific characters? Why did you limit what fortifications and upgrades each class can build so severely? This mode can’t be played alone anymore.
The name of the series was changed for no logical reason. Now the name makes no sense.
The open world elements of the campaign are ■■■■■■■■. They are a waste of time and add nothing to experience.
There’s no option to turn off the damn minimap in horde and escape.
My stats fail to record after every game, and when I open up the stat menu post game, half my stats haven’t recorded. I have about 5 collectibles when in reality I should have at least 30.
Hero perks for escape and horde mode require you to pay scraps to upgrade them. Each upgrade is around 100 scraps, but you only get 5 scraps after every couple of games.
The customisable executions are a joke. Most of the ‘new’ executions are just old executions applied to multiple guns. Also,in a game where you customise your executions, we somehow have no option to use the curb stomp.
Whoever designed the new grenadier and hunter needs to be fired. They look horrendous.
Campaign is too tough on any difficulty over normal. All the enemies are bullet sponges and the slightest touch of a bullet insta kills you. Somehow the TC still haven’t realised that gears is fun when you’re not forced to stick your arse to the cover system.

The new arcade mode is laughable. It’s so incredibly unbalanced, and the lack of gnashers makes the mode very boring.
The campaign is so short, and just as in every gears to date, you learn nothing new that you didn’t already know before hand. What an intriguing story my dudes.
The new leaders for guardian are very difficult to spot. The gold should be nice and bright like in gears 4, especially considering that your stupid character skin system lets everybody play as gold characters. Also why is the cog leader a robot and the swarm leader a scion? Why not have both be robots now that Miles is back? Missed opportunity if you ask me.
Escalation is very annoying to play. Each round lasts a couple of seconds followed by a very clunky, convoluted and long weapon placement screen. Most of the match is spent placing weapons.
The weapon choices on the maps are poor. No hammy to be found anywhere, but don’t worry we’ve place a GL lancer on every map for you.
Store works completely fine despite the rest of the games issues. Glad to know where your priorities are TC.
It’s going to take 3 damn months until we got more escape maps.
Also, just like horde, escape is tied to a ■■■■■■ hero character system.
Giving out Emile, Sarah Connor and the terminator, in a game with limited character choices, has basically turned all multiplayer games into the Spartans and Sarah Connor vs skynet the game.

Enjoying the game but getting serious stutters at times with a 3600x and 2080 super. Playing at 4K at high settings with the 4k textures. Turning the resolution scaling to 1440p and the stutters are still there. Not willing to play at 1080p since I didn't get the card to play at shitty 1080p. Any tips? Will the nvidia game driver fix this?

This is a bad complaint. Also they introduced the anytime mechanic in 4, all in all its probably a positive change since it means someone can't have active reload lancer all the time since its on a cooldown
It's the same as any other Gears but now there's two empty hub worlds connecting the linear levels instead of going from one level to another.
As such, the actual levels are much shorter, there are only 4 Acts instead of the usual 5, so the story of 5 is shorter but the play time is the same because you have to drive from one level to another, and that isn't fun at all.
Gameplay hasn't changed one bit either. Still hiding behind cover and shooting and hiding again until health regenerates.
The visuals aren't as impressive anymore despite Gears always looking amazing, the game got a big downgrade, doesn't look nearly as good as the E3 trailer which is why they showed absolutely nothing of the campaign until a few days before release.
Downgraded physics and animations compared to the other games.

It's just not very inspired, most enemies look like z-brush blobs, nothing really stands out, it's extremely bland and tired.
It completely lacks the grit and personality the original had, misses it by a mile.

Is anyone having an issue where the cutscenes hang for 5-10 seconds, and then rubberband to catch up with the audio playing? I'm suspecting that it's either the installed UHD Textures gumming it up as they try to load in, or maybe the game trying to save, the cutscene trying to load, and the achievement notification all butting in at the same time, and hanging one another up, but that's pure speculation on my part. I'm running on a SSD too, so everything should be loading really quick. It's the only place I've had any issues with things not running buttery smooth with the settings maxed out.

There's 10 maps at launch, 5 new maps and 5 remakes. The remade maps do not show up in matchmaking whatsoever. The remade maps are the worst ones from gears 4 but were ported over for the pro scene, which is a fucking cancer that had been slowly killing the feel of the game.

I don't know much about the games since I only played the first one, but they were all marketed as action, gore, loud guns, men with huge necks & arms. Then there was a trailer about some emotional woman crying, making decisions based on emotion, and shouting “This isn’t about you, it’s about me!”. Instead of huge burly men on the cover, now it's some brown woman with colored hair, and sometimes her face is taking up the whole cover.
