I get this feeling that a CNK story mode was definitely planned early on, but time constraints/activision meddling cut it short. Every CNK track having relic and token challenges, but no rewards is odd. The CNK bosses being dumped into the Pit Stop is weird too, and all the pre-game bundle hype around Zem and Zam working with Oxide would've tied in well to an additional CNK story. Oh well, just getting the tracks was enough for me.

It's too late now, but I wonder if giving everyone the same U-turn ability was a mistake. Things would be way more balanced if advanced/acceleration characters couldn't turn on a dime. But on the other hand, NF is so much more fun because everyone can turn on a dime.

It's a bit of a mistake in my eyes because it operates on the assumption that there are corners Accel and Speed characters can't make without it, when that's actually better for balance. The class was 'Advanced' because you were required to take a different line to avoid the walls or simply quickfire boost in the corner for quicker handling instead of getting perfects. There was actually a good 2 or 3 tracks that Speed characters weren't viable on, sure, but typically it meant using Accel which also has low handling.
U-turns were also clearly used as a bit of a bandaid to mask the fuckhuge collision on tracks in the remake too..
It's a good mechanic, very good, but underneath it masks some laziness and generally decreased the skillgap somewhat. You can kinda correct any mistakes in your line at the press of a button and aren't punished for it.

I wasn't around for the speculation, I bought it day one and didn't play until the first GP. I play turn and balance regularly. The only people who complain are speedspeds because the character they like isn't speed. None of this changes the fact that balance and turn need a buff in top speed.

This is a fair assessment. In the original CTR, tracks like Cortex Castle were actually a challenge for advanced players. I think that U-turning was completely deliberate though, because everything in NF is designed around blue flaming, and maintaining that speed as long as possible. Beenox even went as far as introducing USF pads to old tracks. The less forgiving collisions is their way of "balancing" USF. I can't complain though, NF is more fun than the original CTR.
