Higurashi is kino. Definitely give it a shot if you're into horror/lliked the first episode of Umineko.
They just have some cross overs and are functionally standalone.
I'd recommend just reading higurashi or umineko if you're interested though. Ciconia is going to take a few years for all parts to be released.

I don't like the whole super soldier stuff, it seems like it might be leaning to hard on absurd fights that go on longer than they need to. What I would want the most out of this is proper and indepth character development, and if that is interrupted by constant fights it might be kinda tedious.

When They Cry are not exactly VNs, but kinetic novels. What makes them stand out from rest of genre is that it isn't one story, but multiple stories with same setting and characters. You learn story gradually by comparing results, shreds of information and outcomes, trying to figure out cause-effect relation.

definitely. If you have it from steam, look for 07th mod, that adds features from console release. Graphics are matter of taste, sure, but there's absolutely no reason to not have voice acting or side stories (like for example alternative 3rd chapter) added in console version.

anime is okay I guess, it just barebone when compared to original, and focuses on violence and gore, rather than psychological stuff which is hard to pull in anime.

Give it another try RGD takes some time to get started but its highs like the basedsauce war are really high

The Higurashi anime was popular because it came out at the right time and fulfilled a niche. Horror anime is almost nonexistent, and Higurashi somehow happened to be the best one on the market. The is despite the show itself being quite terrible, with an ugly artstyle, bad animation, and overall low production values. As an adaption it's quite poor, the only upside being the quicker pacing. If you ask the average anime-only Higurashi fan what they most like about the show, it's going to be the gore and edginess.

For example you see the gif of Rika stabbing her neck posted everywhere, giving the impression that was the most iconic scene in the series. But in the VN it was completely unremarkable and the gore was never the point.

Rose Guns Days had pretty kino fights. I dunno maybe it's that minigame I had to play every time but the final fight of part 1 protagonist against Okonigu was the most awesome text fight I had ever read. Like images REALLY started a live of their own. I REALLY saw every moment of that fight in perfect clarity with my mind eye.

RGD wasn't as good as Ryu's other works but boy did it have it's moments.

I hated how the anime killed so many of my favorite parts. I thought the hit and run from the first chapter was the sickest shit but the anime goes through it in 10 seconds with no tension. I think they completely skipped the part where Keiichi went berserk by his front door too. Maybe it was fluff, but it was good fluff to me.

It was LEGIT great. The last half of Arc 1 is god-tier for a reason, and the anime butchers it.

I mean the creepiest thing in that scene is not Rika stabbing her neck but Rika's creepy change in voice and personality that won't even be addressed after the repeat. Creepy shit is constantly happening people say creepy things out of the blue, dead people arise, and you can hear Oyashiro-sama's steps behind your back.
I mean even after semi-happy ending after axe vs bat you find you that the whole village died. I'd say gore is not the most memorable thing in Higurashi.
