Lucina is definitely an easy character to use for how effective she is. She takes away Marth's main gimmick and the one that requires to be careful, and there's not much strategy left. I know she can be beaten if you're cheap, but it's not a very fun fight.

I do wish there were a few more differences between Young Link and Toon Link though. Right now it largely comes down to two things: Toon Link doesn't kick, and his spin attack has much higher knockback. There's other differences, like their arrows and bombs, and subtler stuff, but it sort of feels like they should have at least each had a unique special move.

Pretty much all the newcomers are popular characters in one region or another. >inb4 fake Captain America meme Ridley and Dark Samus were popular American choices, reflecting Metroid's bigger western popularity, while Chrom was an enduring Japan choice, who much like K Rool and Isabelle had a Mii Costume in Smash 4. Chrom himself was famously excluded because he was deemed too similar to Ike, which isn't too strange given how much Ike influences his own design in his home games with stuff like his attack animations and generally high all-around stat growth. But then Smash Ultimate develops the "Echo" concept as a more palatable concept of a clone, and Sakurai can build off a base and give characters like Chrom or Dark Samus their own twists to make them more fleshed out compared to the first runs of Lucina and Dark Pit.
But the rosters are always decided before development even gets off the ground. Echoes or original characters don't take away time or space from a character not on the roster, because that character was never in the conversation in the first place, and people just don't want to accept that.

From what I've seen Corrin and Shulk get a lot more play in japan where people are more comfortable with difficult characters. Ike actually has to be really patient, everything he has but nair sucks. No, they really don't, their normals are virtually identical, same smash attacks, dash attack, their properties have changed less than any of the actual Marth copies (Marth, Lucina Chrom). The biggest differences are in the special moves, which are still the same moves with a half step in a different direction for each.
Ike, Corrin, and Robin are very distinctly different characters in play and Roy's been altered so much that he feels as different from Marth as Luigi is from Mario.

This. Actually make the Links different, put some goddamned effort into the game. There's nothing holding back transformations this time, make Young Link switch between Mask forms with Down B with their strengths and weaknesses and a Fierce Deity Final Smash. And have Toon Link use some of his series' weapons and tools like the Deku Leaf, Skull Hammer, Wind Jar, etc.
