I figured this one too, but not necessarily virtue signaling. Del is with you for the entire game and it makes more sense for Kait to save him.

It doesn't matter, in Gears 6 the devs will ignore who you saved in 5 and both JD and Del will be written out, never to be mentioned again, as the next game focuses on Kait and Marcus going after the new queen.
Marcus, Cole, Baird, Paduk, Sam and Clayton will all die at the end of 6, then they'll try to make Gears 7 or a spin-off without the old guard whatsoever, nobody will play it and Gears will die.

I fucking hate JD but I don't want Marcus to hurt anymore after all he's lost. So, I'd have to pick Del to die. He didn't really grow on me that much anyway.

I find it more likely gears 6 will give you the option of choosing who you saved at the beginning, then run from there.

No, he's not, Spartan IIs age very slowly, Chief still looks like he's in his late 20s early 30s in Halo 4 and 5, you took that Del Rio comment too literally. Plus, besides Chief's slow aging process from gene therapy during augmentation, he also took numerous cryo sleeps and had his genesong unlocked meaning he probably can live even long like more than a thousand years, there's also cryptoms and humanity will find out how to stop aging with Mjolnir armor eventually like the Forerunners did.
