See, it's a sort of splice between Resident Evil and Supermetroid. You need keys, you need weapons and armor, you need ammo, you need to have space to carry loot in.
YOU HAVE EXTREMELY LIMUTED INVENTORY.
AS THE GAME PROGRESSES DUE TO HAVING MORE AND MORE NECESSARY TOOLS YOU HAVE LESS AND LESS SPACE TO CARRY LOOT OUT.
You have Resident Evil style chests at the checkpoints. The further into the game, the more frequently you will HAVE to return there to swap your gear or to dump the spoils. You will start planning your trips too, so that not to venture with the full roster of the abilities.
See, when you first start understanding it's an actual game, even if janky one - as opposed to fatso meme spin on Portal - it will seem way better than it will seem by the midpoint, or, moreover, as you will near the end.
Essentially, it's just "Chore: The Game".

The camera in this game is fucking awful. It's designed to give you the best look of the characters huge butt cheeks but makes it a chore to actually navigate the character. the climbing is so stiff and requires your to buttons multiple times to climb instead of simply holding down said button. It's filled with little annoyances but its not an awful game, just a mediocre one with a sex doll main character gimmick.
