the Klonoa games.
they said best not most bland, lazy and uncreative.
>bland, lazy and uncreative
lmao
>klonoa
LMAO
Gish
smb3
This is also a very good pick. Any indie games like DKC?
Klonoa is a masterclass in game design & defined 2.5d and puzzle platforming as it is today.
Celest is a crappy pixelshit rush job with nothing original that steals it's mechanics and level design from other games.
Rayman
>Spikes every where but where you need to go.
>What if we made that part in the last level of cave story the whole game.
Nothing comes close, maybe Tropical Freeze
>Celeste is a crappy pixelshit rush jo-
Game and its physics is fucking trash. Littlebigplanet 2 did hooks perfectly.
The undisputed GOAT.
Kid Chameleon is still the best block platformer since '93.
everything looks like complete ass apart from some of those background crystals whihc look passable. but the sprites are way too tiny and low detail.
lol no
Super Mario Maker 2
this looks so fucking stupid it's unreal.
This is like the last part of Celeste and it's a challenge level. Why are spikes a bad thing? Was Donkey Kong Country a bad game because half the game is bottomless pits?
this but unironically
Zoomies who couldn't git gud.
casual
>terrible low detail "pixel" art
>hd text and tumblr art slapped over it awkwardly
okay please. is this game serious??
I loved this sequence. The feather was a nice change of pace
Celeste is easy as fuck on top of being propaganda. Go away tranny.
don't touch the spikes!!!!! real challenging.
Celeste is tranny repellent.
VVVVVV is pretty cool
>can't criticize the game for the gameplay
Copenhagen?
a simple shell jump in mario maker is far harder than this.
>propaganda
what the fuck are you talking about
you aren't telling me you bought that "celeste is about abortion" meme are you?
That game looks like itd give me me motion sickness with how loose the controls look
>I want the player to go in this specific path and not to find away around it.
>selects spike asset and places it literally everywhere but the path.
it's brainlet level design and it's been done to death.
Captain claw
the gameplay looks slow and obnoxious. the level design is absurd and done in a manner to trial and error every level. who gives a shit.
If they ever come out with an update to give the sprites eyes in Celeste ill give it a try
Also it has the best ost.
celeste's main game was great. The B/C sides were DUDE SPIKES LMAO like every other indie platform shit
>meme
>Carry the black guy mission
This was fully a genuinely the single worst platforming experience I ever had.
The best character's sprite has eyes
You're a retarded faggot if you think shell jumping is harder.
Tropical Freeze's is way better, though.
a game with shit graphics is not worth playing because the devs didn't put the effort in so it's not deserving of your attention.
>Hey guys recommend a good platformer
>here's Celeste
>ew, not that kind of good platformer, pick something that I already played so I can reaffirm my own tastes
is actually pretty responsive, you can go nuts with it but you dont have to and can play it like a regular bionic commando clone.
I want eyes for all, at least the one you play as. It is ironically an eyesore and I can't stand it
>the gameplay looks slow
>the level design is absurd and done in a manner to trial and error every level
If your intent is to make everyone in this thread cringe as hard as possible, you've succeeded.
Remind me who the speedrunners are?
It literally feels like a DKC game. Made by GameFreak.
it is.
Tropical Freeze is my favorite but I don't think I appreciated just how ascended these games are until I went back and spent some time with the other all-time platforming greats. Yoshi's Island in particular is considered part of the pantheon of legendary platformers even though it has like 5 songs and 3 different stage backgrounds. It's easy to take the aesthetic variety of DKC stages for granted until you venture back out into other games.
good game i like it
matt thorson is just better at killing people than making video games. we all have things we are good at and bad at, and he's just bad at making video games.
they tried to do eyes... lol they'd need to hire an actual competent pixel artist.
The ridiculous level design and nonlinear progression of this game meant you could play it differently almost every time. It was a fucking trip.
No, it fucking sucks and you didn't played it.
I vote for this
Find a flaw.
I understand that it's low effort but from the player's perspective, it makes the platforming challenge very clear. I hate when platformers have easy challenges but obfuscate what I am supposed to do or where I am supposed to go. Having a narrow window adds challenge, how would you add challenge to a platformer? Because you're right, it's pretty uncreative but it doesn't change the fact that Celeste was fun
that's how you were supposed to do it? I collected 4 of those door unlock things before the final flight
And it actually looks better and cuter.
Fucking stardew valley all over again.
they all look like fucking trash, Pico8 at least is kinda funny to look at.
>super meat boy, tumblr edition
blue spheres
sonic 3 and knuckles
Try again, chief.
>trial and error
The game lets you scout out the longer levels before even attempting them. The path you have to take is very clear like 90% of the time and the 10% of the time it isn't clear is near the beginning when it's so easy that you can just figure it out as you're platforming
Maybe not the best, but Gunman Clive 1&2 are pretty damn good
Based.
Everyone posts this game, but every time I look at gameplay it look boring as shit.
This
>making retro-style games based on smash bros characters
They even used "Bros". Fucking boomers.

>make super difficult levels that require mastery of all the skills in the game
>add a mode that lets you cheat past it with no consequence because "uwu the poor disabled gamers should be able to experience the game without challenge or feeling bad at video games."
wario land 4 and specter of tourment are also very good.
>t. 12x14 autist
i remember watching this game trailer long ago and never bothering playing.
Looking right now at videos i dont see the similarities, it has more in common with tropical freeze than DKC, and not even that good.
yeah, cringe. get a better artstyle, faggot.
chinky incel
Obsessed
hey instead of arguing about celeste why don't y'all post something else
try again
Why are the graphics so soulless compared to the original?
silly user, no one here plays games.
Ori and The Blind Forest. I've never had so much joy flying through the game spamming Brawl and Flash Sphere to go everywhere like an acrobatic faerie. The only downside is the horrible Trial-and-error escape segments, the game itself being pretty short outside of 100% collection, and no where to really challenge your skills through normal gameplay. The escape segments are unfair.
I really hope the sequel keeps the same movement mechanics and skills and a lot bigger in scale.
who knows user it's a mindless buzzword
Because Celeste triggers the shit out of polddit.

This game had the most innovative gameplay in any 2D platformer in decades and no one played it
i played it but i don't recall it being particularly innovative
it's gotta be dustforce.
i've played the best of the best of both mainstream and indie, nothing compares to dustforce
>had the most innovative gameplay in any 2D platformer in decades and no one played it
Plenty of people played Dustforce, user.
dustforce is the best 2d precision platformer

user I absolutely love Rayman 1 for its difficulty, but it's definitely not the best of the best for platformers
>that tumblr nose on the sprites
Thank god they dropped it
I don't get the N++ shilling. It controls well and that's it. There's not anything special about the gameplay itself, there is a fuckton of levels but nothing that really stands out.
anyone want to try out my Atlus dustforce levels
I fail to see why this makes you mad.
tell us about your other difficulties
So just don't use the mode user. What, is the great thing about games not beating them, but showing everyone online that you did?
>try to put nose on the sprite
>take up valuable surface area that would make eyes less shitty looking
>remove eyes entirely because you can't see the nose is the problem
Why is the sprite artist retarded?
>Not the best of platformers
Fair enough.
When are we getting a level editor for origins and legends?
This

Super Mario World
Tropical Freeze is probably the most underrated game of all time. If 10,000 people visit Yea Forums in a single day, 100 of them have played Tropical Freeze, and 20 of them have finished it. A marvel of video game platforming.
indie dev
> Retarded trial and error level
It's appropriate rated as being an absolute masterpiece of 2D platforming.
The actual most underrated video game of all time is The Last Guardian.
I always ask what platformers they like if they hate Celeste and the only answer I ever got was Earthworm Jim. I can see why that user hated Celeste because what it offers as a platformer is completely different than what Earthworm Jim offers and I think Earthworm Jim is boring, I like precision and a fast sequence of inputs, Dustforce is also a favorite of mine
objectively false
no, really, tell us why easy modes make you upset.
no, really, tell me about your other failings
I don't know if the Mega Man X series counts but if it does X1-X6.
Well you posted one of the best. Shun is better overall. If you haven't beaten an Umihara Kawase you literally have nothing of value to say on video games.
What is this game
Donkey Kong Country Returns is literally, objectively, the best 2d platformer of all time. Go play it.
I'd say it's actually overrated
it's literally in the name of the webm
I fucking despise platformers with every atom of my body, Fuck Epic Games for showing me this cancer.
Can you read?
stop making it about celeste you fucking idiot
user you misspelled Tropical Freeze there.
>Playing a platformer where you have to waggle to roll
This just look like trial and error at it's very core, like there's only one way to complete each level and it's a one-and-done type deal. Not my idea of a great, let alone the greatest kind of game.
I love a good game about a girl from Tumblr running away from home to confront her inner demons, and getting blacked along the way
Umihara Kawase Fresh. Please buy her game, she's dying
Of course
I think the final "box" art looks good but the pixelshit is shit. You can tell the only thing they cared about was the red hair because everything else looks like trash in every rendition. The only one I think looks at all better than the one in-game is the one all the way on the left. In the only other sprites where her legs aren't retardedly far apart, she looks like a dwarf.
In the actual game sprite she looks fat as well.
Fuck no
Literally and unironically in the filename, user.
I remember buying this game for Wii U and being one of the few people online to defend its existence because of the constant MUH METROID bitching, then when it got ported to Switch suddenly all these videos came out about how well thought-out and designed it was and suddenly opinions on it started shifting. I was pretty pissed but at least people are finally playing it I guess
>This just look like trial and error at it's very core
so is every challenging game
>like there's only one way to complete each level
as opposed to what? give examples.
SPIKES MAKE IT GUD, it's like a shitty mario maker level
i don't see how this can be fun to do something only a single way perfectly.
What the fuck ?
I'll buy it when:
A) I get the disposable cash to buy a Switch
B) There's a PC version.
I already bought the collection from Steam, and I wish they were available on GOG. I'd totally double dip for DRM free Umihara.

Still the king
DKC2 or Yoshi's Island for me. It's probably nostalgia but I think they both hold up great. DKC2 unironically has one of the best OSTs in gaming.
Most of Yea Forums will never understand how good this game was. And thats completely fine, because the less of you normalfags surrounding my quality games the better
for me, it's Pitfall!
Putting aside defunct ereader bullshit, this boom aproves.
Depends on what part of the genre and if you prefer SUPER HARD SPIKEY PLATFORMING, or actual platforming, both of which are fine.
In terms of pure 2D Platformers, the best is a tie between Tropical Freeze and Rayman Legends
In terms of SUPER HARD SPIKEY PLATFORMING, i really enjoyed Celeste but Super Meat Boy still did it better
This is one of the few modern platformers I enjoyed
the wiiu version has all the e-reader levels
What the fuck are you talking about?
Are you mixing up the two DKCR games?
The first one people bitched about because of forced motion controls. Tropical Freeze was basically universally praised.
Maybe some minor bitching about no Kremlins existed, and that's it.
I miss when platforming was about stomping on some dudes and collecting coins, apples and stuff.
Now it's all about Zooming through spikes and being the dark souls of platformers.
Maybe not the best game, but it had the best damn soundtrack
optimizing your peformance is a big part of anything besides casual games
>Tropical Freeze was basically universally praised.
You guys think Yooka Laylee Impossible dungeon is going to be good?
It's trying, but if the physics is as garbage as the original game, it's not going anywhere
>calling other boomers
>posting the boomer version of SMB3
unironically one of the greatest games of all time
Thank god they re-reviewed the switch version
Super Mario World
No question asked
Have you considered that Celeste isn't good? If I wanted floaty wall hugging gameplay I'd play N. Celeste goes for the Meatboy school of 'if it's visually intimidating level design it's good level design' which is a very amateurish perspective to have.
gamespot reviewers aren't from this universe
The newest version of SMB3 can't be the boomer version
Completely different game design, not comparable
Rocket Knight Adventures and Dynamite Headdy are also great.
Cave Story
It's also the most SOULFUL game
You could always try your hand at making one. There's tones of tools around to make platforming games, and all of the SPIKESPIKESPIKES games are independent efforts.
Part of the problem is how small it is
For fucks sake a 1080p display gives you over 2M pixels to work with and you make your sprite like 16x16? Not surprising they couldn't make eyes and a face look right with something that small
You don't remember the online reaction to TF at its announcement? It was near universal disgust because everybody at the time figured Retro would drop that silly Donkey Kong and go back to making more Prime games. When it released it got pretty mixed reactions. I even knew people who bought a Wii U who refused to buy TF.
I's just a mediocre TF rip off. It looks fine but just like the first Yooka it does absolutely nothing new or interesting.
Because I don’t play faggot shit.
Post absolute god tier 2D platformer tracks.

With Super Mario World, I agree.
there are different types of platformers user
the end is nigh and smb3 aren't the same type of game
Donkey Kong on GB is a giant Puzzle game platformer
IWTBTG has a special place in my heart simply because it was clearly made with a lot of love. Kaizo shit is very difficult to make well as is evidenced by all the awful Mario Maker levels and IWTBTG felt like the creator put a ton of thought into it.
Unironically pic related or Goemon's Great Adventure
>First one
NO
YOUR GOING TO SUMMON THEM
NOOOOOOOOOOOOO
so? it's still a 2D platformer.
DKC are more or less Mario games where you play as donkey kong
DK94/MvDK are heavily puzzle focused
Why do people always bring up Mega Man 2? It's a good game, but it's not the best of the 6 NES games.
Super Mario World & Super Mario Bros. 3
>DK94/MvDK are heavily puzzle focused
and what do you do to solve those puzzles? oh right FUCKING PLATFORMING.
Even after all this time
What the actual fuck were they thinking with this box art?
It looks like something 1 dude made on his lunch break
Cave Story
Fuck no, TF is mostly good but as a whole its quality is lower and its tracks are far less memorable in terms of melody and placement. Plus that shitty woodwind ruins every song that uses it with how shrill it is.
retard
This bitch is so broken but so fun to use. Makes me feel a little better after failing one of the challenge levels for the 100th time.
Yeah, the best one is MM3. People just bring up 2 the most because it's the easiest and most accessible due to metal blade cheese.
sonic 3 and knuckles

DKC2 and TF weren't developed by Nintendo.
This
Can't get enough of that Sunsoft soundtrack.
i will now buy your game.
It's Tropical Freeze.
How has no one posted this yet? The platforming in this is pretty good.
Yea Forums liked the game when it was released.
I consider Metroidvania games to not be pure platformers (so I really should've taken out Trine 2 as well)
DKC2 is better than 1
Yeah I probably should've had Super Meat Boy in there too
Sonic 1-3+CD/Mania
>tumblr tier garbage platformer
>quality
Yeah, nah fuck off.
Classic sonic is easy. Rings alone make it a simple game. If you want to compare, list a challenging game
I could go on and on about how many stupid decisions were made in Yoshi's Island. So many gameplay elements flat out sabotage each other, and it and Yoshi's Story are two of the worst examples of how to do collectables in platform games.
My vote for the best is either DKC2 or Klonoa 2, but honorable mentions to pic related while we're doing this thread.
>Celeste is quite literally one of the worst games ever mad-
That's because it did. It's easy to dump a player into a screen full of insta-kill obstacles and say "gl dodging it u fag", but it takes a lot of thought and consideration to constantly outguess the player.
the reason those games have more than one way to get through is that there's barely any punishment for making mistakes and you can just brute force your way through levels. try again.
>>I could go on and on about how many stupid decisions were made in Yoshi's Island
well now I'm curious
>shitting all over the board to troll the cons epic style
cringe
Super Metroid fucking garbage and DKC2 is objectively superior to DKC1 in ever category
Rayman Legends. Single handedly made me not regret buying a WiiU
Hipsters
the sprites are so retardedly tiny, there's not even really much room for details like eyes.
they needed to just not be lazy and try to make art that's a decent size.
MMX1 is honestly the perfect game. It's not my favorite Mega Man game but I still acknowledge that it's perfect in pretty much every way.
>Super Metroid fucking garbage
Zoom zoom
It's crazy how much people here shit on this game. It's really great. Stop following the Yea Forums identity politics hivemind and try it out.
DKC is pretty much the only series where I respect whatever your favorite game is. All of them are really good, it's hard to choose for me.
nothing wrong in being tiny as shit, im a sucker for small sprites in videogames.
Celeste is just fucking trash.
Not that user. But it does kind of cheapen the experience knowing that you can just flip on freebie mode any time. I do enjoy sharing the experience with those who have struggled along with me to achieve something difficult. It would be like participating in a marathon, everyone giving it their all, and then you see a group of people zoom by using "accessibility" scooters.
I can't. Its goat
>Celeste Platforming 4.webm
>no platforming in sight
>All of them are really good
Of all the games you could have listed you picked fucking 2D Sonic with off-screen hazards?
>sequence breaking shit
bruh you just posted cringe.
>come into thread expecting comfy umihara discussion and maybe some other platformers
>80% of it is just fucking shitflinging over celeste
Why do so many faggots get triggered by just this game? Why not meat boy? or IWBTG? or Boshy? or WIngs of Vi? or literally any other platformer that expects you to die a lot on a singe screen?
Tropical freeze
Fuck I almost want to buy it again
2>3>1
Too long. Adding save files to a game series designed to be played through in one sitting isn't smart.
Sonic 2 had some of the best pacing of any platformer. SlowLevel-TrickyLevel-HardLevel Then Casino Night Zone works as kind of a reward level and a good place to stop for quickplay sessions then SlowLevel-HardLevel-TrickyLevel-HugeLevel-Endgamelevels.
Pure Sonic and Knuckles is pretty kino.
cant you read the fucking thread and figure it out on your own?
>Paying $60 for Funky Mode
Bruh.
It's not sequence breaking if it's part of the game design process. The game is built so that more experienced players can do shit however they see fit.
The fact that someone else cheated doesn't lessen what you accomplished, user. It's not an actual competition, you weren't robbed of your marathon trophy by someone on a scooter. You should learn to seek validation internally rather than by external comparison. Your experience of engaging in that challenge and the feeling of accomplishment you gain from overcoming it should be all that matters.
Yeah, that game is really good. What's your point?
Or just download the rom of the Wii U version
because they've made up some head canon about the developers and now have to keep up their edgy counter culture attitude
i guess tropical freeze is a terrible game too with all the shit you can buy in the shop.
My only problem with celeste is the story is meh while the platforming is god tier
I would like to see another I Want to be The Guy game with type of platforming.
>made up
It's still sequence breaking, but it's not glitching, and that's an important distinction. That sequence break is done with pure skill of execution, not with exploitation of a coding flaw. That's the beauty of Super Metroid, just how much you can do by understanding the game mechanics.
Look, it's one thing when you look up the strategy guide, and it tells you about a secret code, and inputting that code gives you infinite lives.
It's different when you hook up a game genie, and alter the variables of the code to give you infinite ammo.
But when cheating is sanctioned by the governing bodies themselves, under the guise of "accessibility", then yes, it does diminish my accomplishment.
>Playing through Sonic 3 and Knuckles in one sitting
No way
>still posting about celeste
>hey guys i just stopped by and noticed you aren't talking about celeste so i to bring up celeste some more
All I see is bad game design. Was this shit even beta tested?
It's a simple story about depression. I enjoyed it. The game was designed with enough respect for the player to let you ignore the story for the most part if you want.
1 is surpassed pretty majorly by 2 and 3 though.
t. bandwagoning faggot
3 is a great game that is excessively hated for Kiddy Kong existing and the lack of David Wise on the soundtrack. The environments aren't as interesting as in 2 but it has the best and most varied level design in the series and the DK coin enemies were a great addition.
Sonic mania is the most fun platform ever made
only bandwagon sheeps dislike DKC3.
Actual fans only hate kiddy kong.
3 is objectively superior to 1
All the Sonic & Knuckles stages are way more cool and interesting than any Sonic 3 stage.
>no consequences
Your save file is tainted if you use it even once.
b-but muh gimmicks
It’s an obvious coding flaw, you Super Metroid autists will take literal feces and claim it’s a well crafted sculpture
Super Mario World / Super Mario Bros 3 / Donkey Kong Country 2 / Sonic 3 / Earthworm Jim 2 / Rayman Legends / Mischief Makers / Donkey Kong Country Returns Tropical Freeze / The Lion King SNES / Aladdin Genesis / Sonic Mania / Megaman 2 / Rockman & Forte / Castlevania 4 or Symphony of the night / Super Metroid / Wario Land 4 / Ristar / Sparkster.
>less than a minute before my post was one about celeste
Yeah drink bleach retard
But can it really be called sequence breaking when the game is designed in a way where skilled and experience players who understand the game are able to do it? It's a very purposeful part of the game and you're even rewarded for doing it with a better ending. It's just very different from using a glitch, or a dev oversight.
Do you mean topic of discussion or the thread? Because I never make threads. I'm going to discuss whatever platformer I want to so fuck off, better than your shitposting. I'm offering to open the discussion to other games and faggots like you are just here to shit on games that don't cater to your preferences.
>not a single mention of this
>All this praise for Tropical Freeze
Unless a miracle happens in the next few months, it's going to be my GOTD.
Does the presence of an easy mode in Doom diminish the accomplishment of beating it on the hardest difficulty setting? Difficulty settings have been in games since the very beginning, Celeste just makes its difficulty settings incredibly granular. Like I said, you're not directly competing with other people, so why bother comparing? This is like an MLB batter getting mad that teeball players don't have to swing at a moving ball.
>castleania 4
>sparkster instead of rockey knight
my nigga.
This but replace Super Metroid with Sonic CD
there is a shill posting webms to derail the thread and you are his ally in shit
Weirdly I've seen more people bring up Wings of Vi in the past month than I have in years, what happened that reminded people about it?
literally the first post.
Personally I like action platformers like Megaman or Castlevania. If I had to pick a singular favorite it would probably be MMZ3. As for more traditional platformers I also like the wii/wiiu DKC games and the Mario games, both 2D and 3D. I also liked and , although personally I wouldn't call metroidvanias platformers. Actually I wouldn't even call blue guardian margaret a metroidvania since it's mostly linear but with backtracking and secrets but that's a rant for another thread
As for why I don't like Celeste it's because I'm just not a fan of precision platformers. I don't like how they're much higher difficulty with more frequent check points compared to other platformers which spread the difficulty over a longer period. And I also don't like is that they generally have a low variety of obstacles, usually just floating spike mazes that you jump through.
These dudes KNOW what's good.
This.
this or Super Mario world
>wall jumps are a coding flaw
>tanking lava damage is a coding flaw
>the walls being close enough to allow for precise and skilled walljumps is a coding flaw
Yeah, okay. Whatever you say, guy.
Yes, it's sequence breaking because the game does have a sequence of intended events that you are doing out of order or skipping past. The developers have intentionally allowed you to break their sequence by giving you the tools to do so, but you've still broken the sequence.
probably nothing he mentioned boshy and remembered wings of vi. solgryn has another game in development, called roah, but i don't think i've seen anyone mention it since the crowdfunding campaign.
Based
/thread
Is this game really as hard as people say it is? I'm pretty decent at platformers, but I usually get filtered by the end game challenge levels.
this.
honorable mentions for smw and sm2
SMB3 but pic related is one of my favorites
This or Mega Man 4 are my personal favorites but for sheer technical mastery and genius, I'd have to say Wario Land 4.
Nothing as far as I know. Solgryn is just drawing thicc waifus on twitter while pretending to work on that new game last I checked.
Ehh platforming took a backseat to collecting things so I would argue it's not the best
I don't know what you mean by "granular". But it sounds like you've had this conversation before, and thought of a buzzword to try and sell the idea.
>This is like an MLB batter getting mad that teeball players don't have to swing at a moving ball.
No, those people are in different leagues entirely. If you want to be a tee ball player, then play an easier game. Or play easy mode. You can't enter an MLB game, and then ask for a tee. Like
>"Ummmmm, actually, this pitcher is way to fast. I'm going to need to ask you to slow it down, so I can score. Thank you."
Even if we're not directly competing, it's still the fact that the option is there. And it's still the fact that there is a social component to all this.
Adventure Island 2 was my jam.
sandopolis
marble gardens
needing the chaos emeralds to go super sonic to fight the final boss but not knowing this until, youre already there
ugly cartoony artstyle
those fucking lumberjack saw elevator things in the mushroom area
Celeste has pretty moderate difficulty in the regular levels. It also has a variety of obstacles. It's not just spike chaos like people here would like you to believe.
Why sparkster over rocker knight? I've played the genesis version of sparkster and it wasn't as good as the original
spbp
Dracula's Curse and Megaman Zero 4
it's hard to 100% at least. there's literally only one achievement.
Requiring the shitty super music whenever you go Super Sonic since it deprives you of the excellent stage music.
>marble gardens
That is not a flaw.
why the fuck does the screen shake on every jump
I play through it in one sitting all the time. It's not that long once you git gud at the game. Also just ignoring special stages altogether, I don't need to play Doomsday Zone all the time.
Very little love for the Kirby and Mega Man series in this thread.
>using super sonic at all
High skill ceiling is more important than high skill floor. Filling a level with spikes actually lowers the skill ceiling because it leaves you with fewer options.
The skill ceiling in Celeste's movement is pretty high with all the momentum tricks, but I feel like the level design works against it most of the time.
marble garden's top sections suck ass and the boss is a copy of the one from 2
If I have a switch and haven't played TF, but enjoyed DKCR on the Wii, should I buy TF?
i've played a arcade game similar to this in the med 90's but i dont remember the name, the final boss is a fox (not is sonic)
You probably won't make it to the end game challenge levels. If I like a game, I tend to beat all the challenge levels e.g. mario, donkey kong, celeste, etc but I couldn't even unlock dustforce's end game. One level away and I gave up after barely being able to get passed the start
nigga did you even played super metroid, the webm you posted is using game exploits to use the shine spark in very small areas.
*and that's for getting the S++ in every level
Tropical Freeze is Returns, but significantly better in every conceivable way.
amazing mirror is so good
why dont you try playing it, instead of just looking at it
retard
>I don't know what you mean by "granular"
Finer control over the details of the difficulty. It's not a buzzword, it's a common term.
>Or play easy mode.
That's literally what enabling the accessibility options is. The only difference between altering the accessibility options in Celeste and choosing the lowest difficulty setting in Doom is that Celeste gives you control over specific variables rather than having preset variables that all change at once. The game also warns you with like 3 pages of text that enabling accessibility mode is not the intended experience and it's only meant for people who have physical impediments to playing the game as intended and has you confirm multiple times that you're sure you want to do it.
Based.
it's extremely easy. just look youtube.com
The games slow pace and easygoing feel clash with it's collectable elements:
Finding secrets or solving puzzles to collect hidden flowers or red coins is only rewarding if you get that 90% mark, but that only counts if they're all collected in run through of the level, and each level takes at least 5 minutes because of slow movement and transformation segments.
Not that having to improve your skills to meet this challenge is bad, but getting better at the levels requires you to repeated encounter these slower parts which lessens their charm and makes them more and more tiresome.
Compounded over that though is that many of these levels have points of no return to them where entering the wrong door will cut you off from a previous area unless you restart the level, and there is rarely a good indicator of when this will happen. So when you encounter multiple doors in one room, and you're trying to find all the secrets, just picking the wrong door will force you to consider restarting the whole level from the beginning.
Finally Yoshi's movesets are so specific and rarely mesh well together. All the powerups you get rewarded with only aid you in combat, and disable your ability to collect eggs since yoshi's mouth is full, so you completely cripple yourself from half your mechanics. and all the transformation segments only work in their respective areas as if they were just minigames peppered in.
Overall it feels like the game tries to present the idea of exploration and experimenting, but will arbitrarily take away your control over what you can do and where you can go which generates an overall frustrating experience.
not the same game, sparkster SNES is an absolute blast and allows for a lot of freedom and alternate paths. Other than the pyramid you pretty much beat it however you want.

>reading comprehension
sorry but im one of those autists that doesnt consider kirby a true platform game.
I can't even tell what the fuck is going on there, it's visually a mess. So I'm going to say, no, it's not the best 2D platformer ever made
Neat
You can get clips of impressive speedrun feats from literal shovelware
Dashing shakes the screen but there's an option to turn it down or off completely. There's a Seattle hipster stench wafting off it but it's a well put together game.
theres no reason to do that though
These are all very good contenders. All three are easily within my Top 10 games of all time
This would also be a contender if it had all the e-levels built into the game and didn't have the godawful bit crunch on all sounds
DKC3 is my least favorite of the bunch, but it's still a very solid 7-8/10 in my eyes. People like to dunk on Kiddy Kong and Eveline Fischer and its justified for the most part but the gameplay is still as good as the previous games and isn't afraid at all to experiment with new ideas
That's what I mean. They relied on the save files to make Sonic 3 ridiculously huge compared to the other games, which also messed with Sonic 3's pacing.
It's like when that really fucking long song pops up on your playlist, and you love it, but you skip it anyway, because it's such a fucking investment.
>feel like playing amazing mirror to get whatever treasures I missed
>save file deleted itself
because they're easy? they still have platform design through and through
I never hated it. It's a forced onions-journo meme that it's "the worst of all time."
>you can hover past levels, skipping them entirely
that actually sounds pretty shitty
imagine thinking under 2 hours is too much for one sitting. hell mania is even longer and that can easily be done in one sitting. the point of the save file is so that you don't HAVE TO.
no it's canadian stink and it's a lame game with a br pixel artist that will undoubtedly be tormenting us for years to come
My brother from another mother...!
That makes my thumbs hurt just watching it
Don't call Nata de Cotton a bitch, thanks.
Because 2 is almost universally recognized as being the worst one in the series, except by X-er sóys.
because kirby is not about reaching areas and test your jump skills, you can just fly through all the game. Is designed to be friendly for new players and let them just mess around and have very dumb deaths.
New Super Mario Bros Wii is friendly with new players too, but its not about messing around and jump everywhere but about completing jump-based obstacles.
Is also why i dont consider SotN a platform game, but i could consider Metroid games since they test the player jump's skill.
Ristar
my nigga
90% of 3D "platformers" are not platformers either
The steam versions are already DRM free.
Meat Boy is pretty fucking gay in almost every way imaginable, true.
>Metroid
How? Metroid doesn’t even have bottomless pits or instant death traps. You can’t fly through everything in kirby, obstacles are in the way.
>rides a rod all day
score system didn't get updated with the longer levels in mind, making it impossible to get the highest possible time bonuses in many levels even with the world record.
So much fucking content. Great time
super meat boy just has a really shitty feel to the movement, but other than this extremely critical failing it's ok
This is it; Peak performance precision platforming
She's not a bitch, Cotton doesn't even know what sex is, just Willow.
This.
>The point of the save file is so that you don't HAVE TO
and because you don't have to, the Devs don't have to make the game worth playing through in one sitting. There's less worry about how going from one level to the next feels, or how to make the player want to keep going, or to try again later if the fail.
And when they games finished, there's less reason to pick it back up. You never need to start the game over from the beginning since there isn't enough effort put into the overall pace of the game, and you can just select your favorite level whenever you want.
your score resets to 0 when you load a save.
Artstyle and """humour""" is horrendous, too. Ed McMillan is a hack.
they arent, most of them are collectathones or action games like spyro.
there are corridors full of lava with enemies trying to push you. Is not that i really consider it a platform game it just an example that "i could consider it".
Thats why i just call most 2D games "side scrollers".
It is also a flash game so there's a lot of input lag even with interrupt based input devices. Most Western platformers rely on central gimmicks that are just not fun.
hack on my dick faggot
>You never need to start the game over from the beginning since there isn't enough effort put into the overall pace of the game, and you can just select your favorite level whenever you want.
the other sonic games have level select codes
You'd have to try extremely hard to convince me this isn't the best platformer on its system, and the best MM game in general
Christ almighty Willow is top-tier late 80s/early 90s animu waifu design
You'd have to try extremely hard to convince me that MMZ3 is the best platformer on its system, and the best MM game in general
This.
Willow is just candy
No one ever mentions these games. Is it because of their cinematic nature, or trial and error gameplay? Fuck the remake though.
Seethe, fatty.
>The remake fails to capture the atmosphere of the originals in any way and the gameplay is worse, too.
Was he right?
It's certainly better than classic and X at least.
>TAS as a representation of what a game is like
They are nice games but I don't really consider them for games that I want platforming from
Yall fucking plebs, theres only one
fuck off eceleb cancer.
Sure, I'll complain about Wings of Vi. That mechanic where walking off platforms gives you an extra jump was the dumbest shit
any vore platformers?
>Westformer
no thanks
Which were developers tools for bug testing the game.
>maybe if I keep posting the same webms i every thread people will like Celeste
You're just being obnoxious at this point, and pushing people away. Lashing out at everybody also doesn't help your case. You're like the Reimufags of platformee threads
mario wold.
You had to buy two incomplete games to play it.
>walking off platforms gives you an extra jump was the dumbest shit
But that's one of the good parts
>Great, varied stage design
>Fantastic boss fights that get new moves/ai scripts based on difficulty/how well you play
>Giant, fun moveset to play around with and lots of player customization to suit your playstyle
>A ranking system to encourage better play
>One of the best soundtracks in the franchise
>Mirror match final boss which are the best kinds of final bosses
It's so fucking good. My only grievance is that it's on the GBA and therefore comes with its limitations like screen size and sound quality
megaman 8
>you can just fly through all the game
That's a false statement for the following Kirby games
>Kirby's Dream Land
>Kirby's Adventure
>Kirby's Dream Land 2
>Kirby Super Star
>Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards
>Kirby & The Amazing Mirror
>Kirby Canvas Curse
>Kirby Mass Attack
>Kirby Super Star Ultra
>Kirby & The Rainbow Curse
>Kirby's Return to Dream Land
>Kirby: Planet Robobot
>Kirby Blowout Blast
Some of those games have rooms with multiple enemies, falling blocks, tome limits and have multiple stage hazards, such as spikes and lava.
Can the NIPS even compare?
Every Yoshi game?
>tome
Fuck, I meant TIME limit
my man you are responding to the most obvious bait in this thread. Do you realise reimu posters are mostly false flaggers looking for (You)s right?
Perhaps you may want to reconsider your life and stop being so naive?
you win user, but i gotta say i liked dkc3 a little bit better, much love for these 3 though
>1
>CD
Well maybe if you responded right the first time Instead of trying to spin bullshit I wouldnt have to.
>Western platformer
the fact alone that you include spinoffs makes hard to take you seriously.
this game is better than it looks
>caring where games come from
i member this.
I understand what you mean. Ive been repalying them and while the controls are precise but if anything they lean towards puzzle game territory, since you have to pause sometimes and observe the room before even making a move.
I bought the remake on sale and as soon as I saw the analog controls and jumping mechanics. I almost stopped before even starting. Also compared to the original, it can be a little too shiny.
Holy basedoli finally someone with a good opinion on this shit board
Wow, this NES game really goes out of it's way to create a world that feels interconnected instead of just being a set of obstacle courses.
>not being able to use pattern recognition to find the best games
it'll save you a lot of time
you described every MMZ game though.
We are forgetting Limbo.
>He doesn't know.
I don't know about the greatest, but I'll list some that I like
>Donkey Kong Country
>Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
>Metroid: Zero Mission
>Super Metroid
>Hollow Knight
>Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
>Mega Man Zero 2
>Mega Man Zero 3
>Rayman Origins
>Rayman Legends
>Kirby Super Star Ultra
>Kirby: Planet Robobot
>Super Mario Bros. 3
>Super Mario World
>Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
>Mega Man 2
>Mega Man 3
>Mega Man X2
>Mega Man X3
>Mega Man X4
>Sonic Mania
>Sonic 3 & Knuckles
>Sonic Advance
>japan makes good games so there cant be any good games anywhere else!
>Limbo.
Just no
Should I buy it on switch or wii u?
Yes, user, we know most good games come from the west.
East and West are pretty equal when it comes to platforms. This is not like RPGs where the two hemispheres make radically different games that are otherwise not comparable.
>save time
>caring about how long it will take you instead of just having fun
Classic speedrunner faggotry as expected from a japan fag.
Rayman Legends easily. It may not be the most difficult game, but the levels have a nice flow to them and everything feels real smooth. I enjoy a challenging platform from time to time, but I can play Legends for hours without feeling burned out.
which is your favorite music level?
Haven't played this yet, how do the c-sides compare to Hollow Knight's Path of Pain?
>you include spinoffs
They are platforming games nonetheless. Some of them even go as far as to limit your fly ability or outright remove it entirely. If I had included games like Kirby Battle Royale, Fighters Deluxe or Team Clash, however, then you'd have a point.
Also, since you never specified if you were either talking about the mainline games or about the series in general, I took the liberty of mentioning some platforming spin-offs as well.
I love all the "durr tumblr" responses because it shows clearly who didn't play the game
i had forgotten about limbo. fuck you.
How can a reviewer be this objectively wrong?
Most bowling alleys have those gutter guards and let you use that weird launcher thing, that's probably an equivalent.
Yoshi's Island
This games so fucking good. Soul.
I believe the game s good but I cant fucking stand the awful artstyle. It's so acidic and disgusting I barf everytime.
There are really people on his board that don't like Platformers at all I truly feel sorry for their souls they did not grow up with the Sega Genesis or Super Nintendo and below and does does not have appreciation for the genre
A good 2D platformer cleanses the soul
Peak soul.
youtube.com
The story is a little cringe but the actual underlying game is 10/10
Celeste is just like Undertale
as in everyone that actually played it loves it, and every fat incel retard who never played it hates it.
Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, followed shortly after by DKC2. Haven't tried out Celeste but the devs seem like they put a lot of politics in what they do and I'm not about that.I'm excited for Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair because honestly? looks damn good.
The writing is awful. I'd never heard dialogue in a game that immediately made me think "A faggy millennial wrote this" until I played Celeste. The gameplay was tight, though, so I enjoyed it.
>like they put a lot of politics in what they do
Did the memes get so bad that people actually legitimately think this is the case now?
but I played undertale, got the good ending, and I still didn't like that much about it.
deltarune on the other hand was a pleasant surprise.
it's possible, I just remember seeing a bunch of trannies at the game awards talking about how they were proud that their game made people get over depression or some dumb bullshit like that, and it kinda turned me off the entire experience.
Why would you play a game you "didn't like that much" twice, and why would you like a game that is basically the same thing but slightly more polished
Literally the only story in the game is that it's about a girl with depression climbing a mountain to get over it.
that's it
Ctrl+F N++ two results and one is a retard bitching about "shilling" because someone included in a list with 10 other games
Ctrl+F VVVVVV one result
Ctrl+F End is Nigh two results
Ctrl+F Celeste 42 results
Christ this board is a fucking embarrassment.
Based.
N++ is kino but without a clear story and progression and the fuckhuge amount of content most people never want to finish it
VVVVVV isnt even close to best platforrmerr in any way
End is Nigh is great actually, I like it more than meat boy
Celeste is also a legit great platformer.
I'm not one of the retards shitting on the game dipshit
shit like
>I always ask what platformers they like if they hate Celeste
is still making it about celeste and not anything else, even if you think you're opening the discussion up, all it does is invite more celeste based shitflinging
I think the game is fine, I'm just tired of the shitposting about it and people like you are just enabling it and are as much in the wrong as the people relentlessly shitting on it
Celeste
Played both. Hatted both.
Cope.
Because it has a very unique and complex controls with acceleration, deceleration, and jumps are based on specific speed and ramp angle and you have very precise control in air. Additionally the levels are open-ended and dynamic with different interactions between obstacles and AI within the level; you approach them in your own way instead of just brute forcing through the pre-scripted path through muscle memory. They are also very layered with one level having multiple levels of difficulty and unique challenge depending on if you are going for G++, G--, T++, T--, E++, etc. Not to mention thousands of expertly crafted handmade levels developed over nearly a decade, a level editor, and co-op.
It's basically the perfect platformer with hundreds and hundreds of hours of content.
>playing platformers for story
Fuck off retard. Way to completely discredit what little weight your shit opinion had
>zoomers ignore meat boy since it easily shits on celeste's difficulty
Oh no no
T
Based.
I don't know, if you include extra content without assists, probably about the same
This is a horrible post.
Celeste is only a precision platformer in the bonus levels but you're right about the frequent checkpoints, it never comes close to dustforce in terms of unbroken sequences
That's because Dustforce's post game content is autismkino.
99% of people wouldn't play a game with literally no setting, story or characters of any kind
That's n++.
There is great gameplay, but absolutely nothing else
This may be a boring answer but Black Betty.
They were all pretty good though but that level specifically moves so well with the music.
This is my pick.
Cave Story
the end is nigh is better than meat boy, but no one played it, because it doesn't have the branding.
>What is Dark Souls
N++ has very clear progression unless they made some big interface changes from N+
A game with lots of setting, lore and memorable characters and setpieces?
There is progression but you just play large sets of levels and that's it.
A player needs more than just "here are 4000 levels you unlock 40 of at a time have fun" to want to actually want to finish 20% of those levels
It's very clean and functional graphics and is in the same style as the previous games which were quite popular. Yeah I'm sure people are playing Super Meat Boy, VVVVVV, The End is Nigh for the story.. right..
Look, just fucking stop. It's clearly not your type of game. You want casual shit, simple mechanics, pretty graphics, play a couple hours and then drop it.
My issue is you call someone out as "shilling" the game for listing it with ten others when you are complete fucking dumbass ignoramus casual when it comes to platformers and especially the N series.
There is excellent gameplay and very minimalistic and functional artstyle along with good music. Again, I guess you wanted some half-assed story that a second grader could have wrote and then you'd love it? Fucking dumbass.
i can't interpret your position in a way that's consistent with the game. most people just don't like these games at all. you need to have a high tolerance for failure.
>This may be a boring answer but Black Betty.
my nigga
Or maybe because steakmund thought they could release a game without marketing and no recognisable name and still think it would sell
Most people who played meatboy have no idea the creators of it made another platformer game
I have beaten all of those and played through more of n++ than you have.
I never said that I wanted that. I'm saying most people wouldn't want to play a game like that.
>you need to have a high tolerance for failure.
That's every 2D platformer, though.
This to be honest senpai.
people give celeste shit because it looks like a typical indie pixel platformer but it has incredibly good movement mechanics and enough advanced tech (hyperdashing, ceiling jumping) to make it worth replaying levels, something that most other great 2D platformers don't have. also worth checking out are "the end is nigh", "dustforce", and N++ as has been stated. one of the best examples of good level design is the final gauntlet room in 8C where you have to implement a type of mechanic from every level you've learned up to that point. it's genius.
Ignore him user, dark soul fags are as stupid as anime posters
Stand back plebs
i don't think people actually played meat boy. i think they bought it because people were buying it. look at the dropoff on the achievements on steam.
>He doesn't have the no death achievements
i still never got impossible boy
Based.
Not the best ever made but i feel more people should know about this underrated gem, its on the difficult side but it has a really beautiful pixel art and a really fucking nice soundtrack also when fighting the bosses the game suddenly becomes a fighting game like SF II
>I have beaten all of those and played through more of n++ than you have.
HAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHA
Show me your fucking stats dumbshit. I just find it so fucking hilarious how easily people lie. Let me even see if you even beat expert row at least.
You have already made it abundantly clear what type of game appeals to you, and it's one that is pretty but shallow with some tacked-on story.
Yeah, also a lot of people used SAM or some other unlocker with it, the percentages don't even hardly change as you go down the list of ironmans. It's pretty fucking difficult, not something 1.7% of casual gamers are doing.
Ok admittedly I didn't feel the need to get N++ because I was content with N+, and I guess story would help hook me into a sequel.
Yeah, it took some practice for sure. I didn't really enjoy the game so it was really quite tedious.
Are you seriously so shortsighted that you cannot see this is an awful example for your case?
Been playing it recently on vita It's just a bit too floaty jumps for precise movements, but thank god for the quick restart after every death
>Vita
>Show me your fucking stats dumbshit.
I’m making it very clear that I’m not him, but you should probably do the same instead of spewing out drivel like you have been.
Unless you’re a turbo autist, some sort of lore, setting, story wrapper, or general characterization of the world is important for the motivation of nearly every player.
>I need a bunch of poorly written half-assed characters as motivation to play my games
Ah yes, when I saw that two second clip of epic villain stealing defenseless damsel in Super Meat Boy, I was hooked and just knew I had to play through every level!
The concept of saving a girl is infinitely more motivating then the literally nothing of N++
Yes, I’m glad you understand. Besides it’s not just an opening clip, it’s the presentation at the end of every level, the moments between the actual levels, and the theming of the worlds. Just because you’re too simple to look beyond your nose doesn’t mean this isn’t the case for games. It’s nearly universal and your desperate claims for otherwise just make you sound stupid.
>celeste
>forced trannies and race mixing propaganda shoved down the player's throat
>good
fuck off tranny
Cope.
tell me about the narrative of blockout
they have ball launchers now?
N++ has a consistent art style and theme, gradual introduction of enemies, obstwcles, and mechanics, as well as dozens of unlockable customizations.
So your real complaint is that you wanted a flashy artstyle instead of a minimalistic, clean, functional one? Or perhaps you need some flavor text about how your ninja girlfriend was kidnapped and the only way to bring her back is completing thousands of levels?
Christ, imagine being this much of a drooling mong.
Anti-Nintendo sentiment was at its all time high in the games industry when TF came out. The Wii U brand was so poisonous that the Nintendo bonus got inverted, and it became the hip thing for the press to distance itself from Nintendo games. Then Pokémon GO came along and Nintendo was hot shit again. The games industry is fickle and prone to arbitrary changes in fashion like any other.
Yeah, many people call Tetris the perfect game, but what it really needed was a plot. Would really allow you to sympathize with the blocks and their plight. You stack the blocks, but do you ever think about their struggles?
Really lost opportunity there so I stopped playing after 10 minutes.
Those weird frames where you put the ball at the top and it goes down a slope. So kids or people who can't swing a bowling ball properly can play.
Yeah, who needs to be driven by expert game mechanics, learning of enemies and level designs, and progression as a player in learning, mastering, and overcoming. It really needs some contrived story, preferably with epic memes and poop jokes.
never seen that, granted last time I went bowling was near 20 years ago.
once people read the napkin text at the start of arkanoid they never looked back to breakout
That’s one of the few exceptions. You might as well have said Tetris, which is just a streaming puzzle game based around pattern recognition, akin to something like chess or even Sudoku
>So your real complaint is that you wanted a flashy artstyle instead of a minimalistic, clean, functional one? Or perhaps you need some flavor text about how your ninja girlfriend was kidnapped and the only way to bring her back is completing thousands of levels?
Thank you for demonstrating that your primary form of “logic” is straw-manning. I personally love puzzle games and N.
One of these, you see them at alleys from time to time.
sorry i meant to write asteroid
either its a new thing to get younger people in, or my ally by me, well... both of them, never had that. been in their back rooms due to various youth leagues
>but from the player's perspective, it makes the platforming challenge very clear.
Literally only if you're a mega retard and don't understand that the restriction of movement makes things EASIER not harder.
You sound like those faggots that shit out a course on mario maker and think a 0.001% Clear rate means you actually made a good map
dustforce is also gay shit
Considering you mentioned concepts that already present in N++, the only thing it doesn't have is a plot or characters. It has consistent art style, it has consistent theme, it has introduction of mechanics and enemies over time, it has unlockable customization and a variety of options. It gives you the expertly crafted tools and you overcome the challenges and learn the deep complexities of the game.
I think that's really the optimal goal of a game, where the "story" is through complex game mechanics and the evolution of the player to learn and overcome them rather than some lazy juvenile writing and character development.
The exceptions prove the rule, user. Your case is extremely weak and your examples only prove it. The industry moved past those approaches to games long ago.
I’m glad your autism is still satisfied 30 years later playing Asteroid
sorry i was trying to type qbert. what was the plot of qbert again?
Except that's not true at all. No game even comes close to the mechanics of N++. It is an effort of love, nearly a decade of hard work from extremely passionate and driven devs. There's nothing else like it. It's the Tetris of platformers.
Same answer. Besides, Q Bert has characterization, which I mentioned a while back as a draw for players
