Sims 2 is the deepest mechanically. Shit, even Sims 4 is mechanically deeper than Sims 3. If there's one thing the community bitched about in regards to Sims 3 it's how goddamn watered down and simplified the game is. Yes, it's open world. No, that doesn't mean it's the deepest.

It's like a 4X game. Sure, you could play for a hour, but most likely you're going to play 8 hours in a row.

The only mod that breaks is WhickedWhims and the column mod. Just make a folder in your mod folder that you can delete whenever you need to update those two. 99% of your mods won't be affected anyway.

rule of thumb is to get the one with the latest expansion included, as that'll have every previous release bundled along with it. haven't gotten around to playing 4 lately, though
