That article is from nov of 2000, and in the article it states that these DVD players wouldn't hit stores until a month later. which is 3 months after the launch of the PS2.

It became the best selling console after a significant price drop as well as the fact that it could:

That isn't what I said. I said that is where toe most profit is made. They continued to sell more PS2's during it's lifespan but at a decreased price, which means less profit on each unit sold.
