From most of the shit I've seen a large contingent of valve employees, at least the ones who worked on the shitshow, were just massive hardcore garfieldfags.

The monetization of the game was the least of its long ass list of problems.
Artifacts single most pressing issue was that the game itself was flat out unfun to play.

Everything from the games mechanics to the effects of the cards themselves, to the length of games just killed everything.

I'm pretty sure the gameplay of Artifact was already in the cat's head way before it was conceived with a dota theme. I actually don't know what valve brought into the game aside from the dota paint.
