I've been playing the daemon x machina demo. Feels better than the first one but still just feels like I'm sliding around. The only mech game I've ever played was custom robo and the old mechwarrior games.

Emulate 3, 4 and 0. They emulate fine, 4 just has an issue where you need software mode
After that you can play 7 which is pretty cool

Start with the PS1 trilogy for some legacy shit like Nineball and Destroy Floating Mines
If you find the PS1 games too clunky then play 3, it's great.
After 3 play the games like this

Also Formula Front is pretty strange but that's more a side dish
