But yeah, the early games couldn't do it, it's still iffy these days and later games don't have Amano as the lead art director, so they have different styles (including the remakes of III and IV).
I don't really get that vibe outside of Minwu, and that's due to the turban/mask combo he wears.

Omega looks great, the Warrior of Light armor you can get as glamour looks like fucking trash
The bright, garish multicolored silks and exaggerated armor in lots of his designs is hard to do in 3d without looking bad. Hardly any of his art is monochromatic like Omega.
The DRK Shadowbringer armor also looks decent

it's not a matter of modeling but of rendering, had any of these models have a more accurate rendering style (more brushy feeling) rather than generic clay looking anime 3D style, they would look much better
