Not once did I ever see a friend or family member using component or anything other than composite video to play video games/watch movies through the entirety of the SD era.

Composite is the cheap and easy solution. On the hardware side a lot of manufacturers weren't keen on integrating much more than that, so a lot of people bought VHS/DVD players with composite and never had a reason to buy another.
Unfortunately for CRT enthusiasts that means a lot of 2D games are designed with only composite in mind. It's literally easier to get a gamecube to do HDMI than it is to find a component adapter, and older 2D games commonly rely on analog degradation for a rudimentary sort of antialiasing.

I dunno. Bothers me too I that I have to go out of my way to get a non shit signal and screen for these systems.
Still need to get proper component out for my SNES, Genesis, PS1, and OG xbox.
Also need to pick up a dreamcast and a Saturn but that's besides the point.

RGB took away intended dithering effect. Don't get me wrong, in general, RGB is superior, but devs unironically designed their graphics assuming that everybody would be playing on shitty walmart brand tvs with only composite.

My girlfriend has worked in electronics shops all her life, and has no idea what SCART or even component is. It's just not popular in Japan also from Wikipedia
