When you only had a handful of games to play and you actually completed them all.
Don't get me wrong. I enjoy the ease of access, but there is something lost when it becomes easy to access most things at a press.

Yes, we (30+) all miss those days. The Dreamcast was the last good console. The millennium marked a turning point in video games with 2007 signalling the total demise.

I think part of it is being children during those times back when you didn't know as much and could find great value in cheap things.

You still played games that way back then, there were always commercials with gameplay and you would watch your friends play the game before you got it yourself, the equivalent of watching a YouTube gameplay vid. You listened to your friends opinions on games to decide if it was worth it for yourself, same as reading reviews. I was born in 2001 and never really got into the internet until like 2009-ish. For a long time I was happy with my gamecube and my brother's 360 and whatever games looked cool. I feel like I get what you're talking about, even though I'm way younger.
