What kills me most is the fact that Western pig VA's can't do cute at all. Case in point: Rune Factory 4. There's a character in Rune Factory 4 who's gimmick is that she's always sleepy. I)n her introduction scene, she's sleeping and gently breathing in and out, making an occasional cute wimper. In the English dub, the pig VA couldn't understand what "gently breathing while asleep" was, so it just turned into "moaning like you're in a porno".

It wasn't just un-cute. It was straight up gross. Hearing some 40 year old talentless hack moaning and panting.

I have yet to see a single anime or game with an acceptable English dub. There simply isn't. That's because voice acting in English is what you do once you've failed as an actor and don't want to quit.

Western women have made their voices deeper over the centuries because of feminism and deeper tones of voices being associated with masculinity and dominance, so when westerners are presented with Asian cultures where this didn't happen and women still have high pitched voices and act girly and are ok with cute things they have difficulty processing it and assume it must be fake.

She also lost her touch. If you listen to any of her roles after the sex scandal, you can tell. She tried to quit the industry and do something else and then came crawling back as a bigger failure than before. I think a big reason for why English dubs of Japanese games often sounds so weird and forced is because of how the Japanese language is structured, its very direct and economic in structure.

In English, we often have a bunch of flavor text like "Oh wow, that's a very pretty necklace!" while in Japanese its more "wow, necklace cute!". So the japs like putting a bunch of extra emotion behind their words to convey their feelings. However when you do this in English it sounds very weird and unnatural, because we already love using a bunch of extra jargon to show how we feel.

Ironically Judgement was a step backwards from Yakuza because the dub track was going for a localised approach that Yakuza wasn't doing, and the differing scripts only applied to voiced dialogue and all the non-voiced text was given the localised treatment instead of the Yakuza-styled faithful one.

Not always true. Three Houses has a lot of differences between the spoken English dub and the written text. It just depends on who's handling the translation. I think SE does all their localization in-house which is probably why Nier was localized similarly.

To be fair, Japan always has one VA for each role. Meanwhile it's extremely common in the west to use the same VA for different roles within the same franchise or even game. Maybe it was literally the same voice and that's why it sounds similar.

That's another thing. Most Japanese VA's worth their salt can imitate all of the different regional accents in Japan. In America you can't get anybody that can effectively imitate an accent. The worse offender is fake British accents, but there's fake Southern and fake Australian too.

Honestly one of the big reasons I hate dubs is because they almost always use Americans and American accents are obnoxiously nasal. The Italian dub of Netflix Castlevania was alright.
